Thank you Spammals, very awesome stuff! =D
It's almost enough to inspire one to become a ship designer, if only to design and build ships to have actual elegance like they did back in the early 1900s. Unfortunately the fact that ships like the United States exist in the state they're in because no one has the interest in them anymore is quick to kill that inspiration. It would be wonderful if we could have ships as nice as the Olympic class, Lusitania class, etc sailing again, but no one would ever choose them over the big, white, floating bricks we dare to call ships nowadays. They can't even be bothered with giving them actual names anymore (exhibit A, "___ of the Seas"). Ships used to have names. They used to have personalities, in a sense, which were reflected in their names. Now they're all just full generic stuff that you can experience on land. At least, while their current ships may not be the prettiest to ever exist, Cunard still tries to keep up the class and traditions of that time (building their ships to be more like ocean liners than cruise ships, giving them actual names (Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary II, etc.) etc.). Except for their new ship they recently announced. That thing is fugly and it hasn't even been built yet.
Just one tiny nitpick. The change in beam to 94 feet was made before work on the ship began in November 1911, the increase was to add even more stability. At the same time there were changes to increase the size of boilers and upgrade the low pressure turbine to be more powerful. Great video in general though!
None one thought about Sea Mines while designing her. :) And a ship made for the cold North Atlantic sailing into the hot Mediterranean. She wasnt designed to function in that climate. It must have been so hot onboard. Hence why so many port holes were open.
The Germans got lucky on that one with the timing. War time procedure was to have the watertight doors closed at all times except for when there was a shift change. Britannic struck the mine during a shift change, warping the hull, and causing the forward watertight doors to jam open.
@@airplanenut89 hospital ships were never targeted by either side. The Germans did not benefit from her sinking. They basically lost a sea mine. Wasn´t the Parisian Cafe moved to the starboard side of the A deck Promenade? I also think that some of the forward 1st class cabins on B deck were removed and a closed promenade deck was added, kinda like Olympic´s one but instead of extending the entire deck it went only from the staircase landing to the forward end of B deck. I have also seen some illustration showing the 1st class lounge with a dome added in the middle, which would explain the addition of a compass on top of the bridge since the other one would have to be removed. They added a lady´s hairdresser and manicure salon, probably to compete against Aquitania, an additional elevator was added near the Aft staircase which went from A deck To E deck (it stud in the middle of the cabin corridors, kind of weird but ok white star), The Starboard side B deck suite was also changed, matching the requirements of the time better, and also kind of similar to the German Imperator parlour suites. Just wanted to point out these as I find them interesting as well but like you say #100%idiot #notanexpert
I know for sure that B deck regained a promenade from the Grand staircase forward. The first class cabins were to be redesigned into larger suites to keep up with the times if I'm not mistaken. Also that fourth elevator for first class was one of the weirdest additions. Why they put it were they did is beyond me.
@@claian12 Yes it´s such in a random place, I bet most people wouldn´t even realise it was there. I also think they added private bathroom on every 1st class cabin, again probably to compete with Aquitania.
@@diogobarbosa1406 I've heard that but I cannot confirm it. It makes sense though, as they were competing. I wonder now did they move the Cafe Parisian to the A deck starboard promenade so they could add something to the port side enclosed promenade too in order to compete with Aquitania's garden lounge. I know that Aquitania had something in her port and starboard upper enclosed promenade deck space. One was her garden lounge but I cannot remember what the other one was. Edit: I looked it up. Aquitania had the garden lounge on both sides of the ship, surrounding the 1st class lounge. So if they moved the Cafe Parisian to A deck on Britannic, would they have had it on both sides of the ship? I would have done that honestly. The question is, which pantry would have served the Cafe. It would have been a bit much in my opinion to have to bring food and tea from the deck pantry aft all the way forward down an open promenade.
@@claian12 The cafe Parisien was added along the corridor that connected the forward staircase to the lounge, so when walking along that corridor you would look into the cafe if they added the cafe on the port side it would have "blocked" the view from the writing and reading room. Plus they added a few new cabins on the port side (like they did on Olympic later on, cutting a bit of the writing and reading room and of the promenade) meaning that the people who stayed in those cabins wouldn´t have much privacy or silence because of the cafe being right next to them. So I don´t believe they would have done the cafe on the port side as well. As for the pantry, I really don´t know. The closest pantry to the cafe is the one that serves the Lounge but like you say it is miles away, I don´t know how it worked on Titanic, I assume the staff would have used the A la Carte restaurant galley.
@@diogobarbosa1406 Yeah. they cut away the alcoved section with two big bay windows from the writing room. Do you know how much space the Cafe took up on Britannic? Any deckplans I can find actually don't show it, rather they just show it as promenade space. The pantry problem is a bit of an issue. At least in the lounge, they could pass food and such through the wall between the pantry and the lounge bar. It would have been a bit much to wheel food and hot beverages through the lounge to service the cafe. I didn't mean to have a busy cafe beside those cabins but rather fill the portside promenade to have some feature or other. A promenade side cabin wouldn't have had much privacy anyway. Noise and such. At least once it's night time, the public spaces were closed. Yeah, I always assumed that too. It made sense to have the cafe served by the restaurants galley.
I heard the Cafe Parisian was planned to be on A-deck promenade so the passengers can have a break after having a stroll on the deck so it can be easier to access.
+S M R This wasn't actually the case, it's an idea that Remco Hillen came up with in the early 2000's, however he's quoted as saying "no references are known about this feature being installed on Britannic" The supposed cafe doesn't show up on any deck plans of Britannic.

Britannics grand staircase probably ended up like Titanic's. With almost all of the wood paneling and other buoyant materials floating out of the ship as it sank (which most of Britannics was not present as it was a hospital ship), It's probably just a big void that goes down several decks like on Titanic. Britannics would be turned 90 degrees to starboard, though.
I love this so much. It's so sad, with the war converting her to war service. It would have been so grand and so supreme to sail on her. If only she received as much love and care as her sisters. Congrats on 50k Spammals! Been with you since 6000. :P
the double hull put to the boiler room number 6 was also his loss, when the ship hit the mine the double hull was first flooded causing the ship to start to have a starboard list, as happened with the RMS Lusitania, the Lusitania and his sister ship Mauretania had the transverse bulkheads that were used as carbon deposits, protecting the ship's machinery against surface attacks but not submarine attacks, when the torpedo hit the Lusitania did it in a transverse bulkhead causing the large starboard list of the Lusitania and useless lifeboats, that's my speculation about the double hull of ship
Nice video about my favourite Olympic class ship Idk why I love the Britannic so much Also I subscribed less than a week ago and you are my new favourite UA-camr
Spot on Spammals! You've pretty much covered all of the physical changes on Britannic, there are a few more: a lot more first class staterooms have bathrooms, the Reading and Writing Room was made smaller due to the addition of cabins, an extra cabin was added alongside the 2 already in the Aft Grand Staircase, the aft sections for 2nd and 3rd Class on E and F Deck were rearranged and the Engineer's Quarters were moved to E Deck instead of F Deck. There are many other smaller changes including a different arrangement of rooms and different floorings/wall panels in certain areas (for example the flooring was changed in the 1st class corridors). Great video, again a shame Britannic was never in passenger liner service, would have made one hell of a ocean liner :P
I sadly was running very short on time and mental energy. I did originally have the Reading Writing Room change in the edit. Voice over is done for it but I pulled it at the last moment because i had ran out of time. Another change I didnt film but noted while editing was the 2nd class Stairwell boat deck door had moved from Starboard to the aft wall coming out middle of the deck. makes sooo much more sense. Thanks for the knowledge on all the other changes! Im sure people reading the comments would like them too.
Spammals Don’t beat yourself up about it, if you listed every single change from Titanic to Britannic this video would be like an hour long lol P.S. I also forgot to mention that the hospital changed location from D Deck to C Deck aft near the 3rd class spaces there. Also worth noting is the addition of a “Senior Officer” in Britannic’s Officer’s Quarters.
After Titanic sank, they halted construction on Brittanic to make safety improvements. The big change was making the water tight doors go to top deck as they did not in Titanic
Spammals, would you like to do a "Then and now" special on Britannic? I'm sure we will have to wait for better documentation of the wreck's interior. Perhaps maybe a what if vs reality comparing what Britannic was supposed to be vs actually being a hospital ship. Maybe if you're up to it, combine the two concepts into WSL's design vs hospital ship vs current state?
I’ve always wondered why there’s only 2 davits on the port side boat deck and 3 davits on the starboard side. (Also sorry if I interrupted you while you’re recording on the RMS Britannic server)
There were meant to be eight gantry davits on the _Britannic:_ Two near the bridge, four on the aft boat deck, and two at the stern. Unfortunately, due to the war, the stern gantry davits as well as the port bridge gantry davits were never installed.
I actually am amazed ParticularParticle's RMS Britannic is in here, it's nice to see. (edit) I actually was excited to tell ParticularParticle that it was featured in your video, he said it made his day.
in roblox there's a Titanic game called " Titanic Sailing simulation" it lets you explore most of ship but it doesn't sink though. I feel like you should check it out. It also has Olympic, Britannic, and Lusitania.
Cafe Parisiens have been abused throughout transatlantic liner history. Their presence has been taken for granted, and they have been replaced by the dreaded a la carte restaurants. If you or a loved one know of a Cafe Parisien about to be replaced by an a la carte restaurant, donate to Spammals' Cafe Parisien Sanctuary, where we will take good care of those left on the Atlantic.
A few other changes were made, Third Class was given new entrances onto the ship, and the First Class womens salon would be moved one of the decks to another, also there would be new F Deck entrances located on Scotland Road on E Deck. And the dining saloon was designed to be much more luxurious and was made specifically for the rich and famous.
@@Spammals really enjoying it! i love history and ships but i know very little of the history OF ships lol so this has been great cant wait to see what is next 😀🤘
I can't recall exactly where, but I heard a rumor that the glass dome of one or both of the grand staircases was to have been stained glass. I asked the facebook group about what colors it would have been, and someone suggested the company's Red and White.
Off the top of my head divers have documented the forward dome. Fragments of it remain. As for the aft dome last I read was that it hadnt been explored fully. This is all from memory so dont take anything as fact. I would do some research for more a more solid answer :)
For anyone wondering there is another Roblox game where it is an RMS Britannic simulation, as she would have been if she had seen service. There is also an olympic 1911 sim, olympic 1934 sim, titanic sim, RMS and HMHS britannic sim as well as a lusitania sim.
One thing I didn't realize until recently was that both grand staircases on all three ships went through several decks. I had assumed that the staircases only went between two decks.

Hi spammals love the videos, keep it up
The once thing that you never said was that the Britannic is more heavier than the Titanic
you might want to check your grammar there, not trying to be rude or anything just saying
@@aninkytheorist1133 he has good grammar-
So that’s why Britannic sank faster
That's was an extremely interesting video spammals. I would love more videos like this
the double hull put to the boiler room number 6 was also his loss, when the ship hit the mine the double hull was first flooded causing the ship to start to have a starboard list, as happened with the RMS Lusitania, the Lusitania and his sister ship Mauretania had the transverse bulkheads that were used as carbon deposits, protecting the ship's machinery against surface attacks but not submarine attacks, when the torpedo hit the Lusitania did it in a transverse bulkhead causing the large starboard list of the Lusitania and useless lifeboats, that's my speculation about the double hull of ship
Elevator on Brittanic comes to the Boat deck amazing but its sad beacuse it wont goes down to the F deck :(.
Nice video about my favourite Olympic class ship
Idk why I love the Britannic so much
Also I subscribed less than a week ago and you are my new favourite UA-camr
I’m glad you played the roblox britannic
Spammals Don’t beat yourself up about it, if you listed every single change from Titanic to Britannic this video would be like an hour long lol
P.S. I also forgot to mention that the hospital changed location from D Deck to C Deck aft near the 3rd class spaces there. Also worth noting is the addition of a “Senior Officer” in Britannic’s Officer’s Quarters.
Amazing spammals i AM a huge fan of You for the long time
Wonderful video, I always find Britannic to be very interesting with both her minor and major differences that set her apart from her sisters.

I am now a lot more knowledgeable thanks to your Amazing video great job 🖒
Wow... Britannic was much nicer!
I LOVE that Spammals love Titanic / Olympic Class lore! Thanks for those videos! o/
I've played this exact roblox game alot of times and I'm happy that you've finally played it!😄
After Titanic sank, they halted construction on Brittanic to make safety improvements. The big change was making the water tight doors go to top deck as they did not in Titanic
WE NEED A TITANIC 2 AND A BRITANNIC 2 and I WOULDNT LEAVE OLYMPIC 2
But...this video talked about the _Britannic II._ You're thinking of a _Britannic IV._
Tank'you Spammals. Very interesting!
The only Olympic class ship you can swim inside of...
I’d love to do that but I have nothing I can work with regarding the wreckage. I’ll have a look and make some calls lol.
This was awesome and very informative thank you!
Love the video! Instantly subscribed.
I have not watched your videos in a while and I would really like to see more of this
Despite it being a lot more safe, I liked the titanic design a lot more. It's such a shame that the Britannic sank anyway after these changes...
White Star Line ships update log:
MORE FUCKING LIFEBOATS
4 FRICKIN EXPANSION JOINTS
EVEN HIGHER BULKHEADS
and a compass.
Don’t underestimate that compass, it has the power to end war! (See sign in the period footage)
Thx for this i never knew a lot of the changes and designs, and i know a lot about ships but, not as goo d as you! Good spammals!
Eyy you used the RMS Britannic Sailing Simulation from roblox lol
So much information while making the video fun and exciting!
A massive field full of Cafe furniture lol
@@Spammals And you're endorsing it!
r.i.p the ultimate beauty ship
Hey spammals you forgot to say in the vid and I recon you are an expert! :D :P
I spammls love your vids congrats on 50 thousand.
This is how much he said *deck
good video and good teaching to people *clap* keep up great work spammal mate

Interesting viedo
Awesome this was so interesting 😀
Glad you liked it buddy, these Titanic / Britannic week events are something we do 3 or 4 times a tear as a special event. :)
2 seconds of school: 🤢🤢
10 minutes of spammals explaining:😊😊
For anyone wondering there is another Roblox game where it is an RMS Britannic simulation, as she would have been if she had seen service. There is also an olympic 1911 sim, olympic 1934 sim, titanic sim, RMS and HMHS britannic sim as well as a lusitania sim.
Britannic's interiors would have been gorgeous. More opulent and more colourful.
One thing I didn't realize until recently was that both grand staircases on all three ships went through several decks. I had assumed that the staircases only went between two decks.
History with spammals!
