- How to Hydro Dip Tumbler Tutorial Spray Paint Technique. A very quick and simple tutorial on how to hydro dip.
Both tumblers I used the same paints, the only difference was the base.
I only give my best representation on how I do them. I'm certain others have mastered this technique and may be able to guide you better. I do however hope my way can help someone and allow anyone to be able to hydro dip their tumbler with ease.

Love both of these!!! I have yet to get a good hydro dip. My paint always clumps up before I dip my cup. Wondering if my water is to cold. I couldn’t help but laugh about the lawn mower. By the way I have a neighbor who gets on his lawn mower 7 days a week rain or sunshine 😂

I watch so many videos on here and everyone's looks so pretty. But every time I do it the paint clumps up on my cup before I can even get it fully submerged in the water. Am I going to slow when I dip it or what??

I'm wondering if these are regular water tumblers? How do you get the paint from going into the cup? What are you using to hold the cup for dipping? What do you do after the paint drys? Can you use a plastic tumbler instead? Can you wash these in the dishwasher or hand wash? Safe for drinking out of or used for something else instead?
Craig's mom I don’t worry to much about the paint getting inside I just clean them with acetone when I’m done, I use my football holders to dip them, once the paint dries I epoxy they don’t have to be sealed. Yes I’m sure plastic cups are okay to dip, These cups need to only be hand washed. These are definitely safe to drink from. How do you protect the paint?
Hey, do you use any spray paint? When you prime the tumblers can I use the paint & primer spray? Also how can I add glitter to it?
Yes, I use any brand to hydro dip, though the metallic spray paints can be very tricking in the water, I've never tried with paint and primer combined, couldn't hurt to see if it works. You can not add glitter to the water but you can use epoxy glitter additives for a final coat and the whole cup will sparkle.

Thank you so much, Paint will get inside the cup when doing this method and to clean it, I just use acetone and a mr. clean eraser and it cleans right up. To pop most as I can never get all I use a heat gun to push off as much of the remaining water as possible. I hope I was able to answer your questions and let me know if you have any others and anything I can help you with.
Did you seal after dipping and before applying epoxy? If so, how long did the seal dry before epoxy?
I do not believe I did however you most definitely can seal them prior to epoxy, usually in about 30 mins or so or when you know your clear seal is fully dry you can epoxy.
Do metallic colors dry quickly? My first attempt was an epic fail. Lol. I used pinks, grey and metallic rose gold. I dipped and globs of paint was stuck to my tumbler. Tried again minus the metallic and it looked great. Actually let’s rephrase that. I gave it a 2nd try same colors. Swirled with plastic fork and it clumped up. Cleaned that and left metallic out. Worked like magic. Any tips?
Oh yeah, metallics can be super, super tricky I dont have any real tips on those.

Yes but my favorite brand is Rustoleum
I just watched your tutorial but I'm confused on what to do after dipping. Do I let it dry upside down or on the turner? How do I clean the inside of the cup? Does the outside need sanded before epoxied?
I just leave the tumbler to dry upside down, once you epoxy the tumbler then you clean the rim, these were painted with fresh paint so no they were not sanded.
These came out absolutely fantastic! Prettiest dips I have seen yet! Now, how much gets inside the cup & is it easy to remove? Do you just use acetone?

There's a new thing you can get called Tumbler Shields that keeps the paint from getting inside

Nancy Webb thank you so much for sharing that!!! I just looked them up. Question for you- are the silicone shields to prevent epoxy from getting in your cups? And the hydro lid added to that is for hydro dipping?

When you epoxy over it can you see the air bubbles? If not turn what do you doing to get rid of them?
Alicia Rust All bubbles from water are gone by the time I Epoxy as one way or the other they have dried.
I have a couple questions do you need to seal it with anything? And will vinyl stick to it afterwards? Also how do they hold up? Are they hand wash only?
misty noble No these were done with spray paints so no need to seal, I would recommend a thin coat of epoxy before decals. These cups hold up very well and yes they are hand wash only.

In the bucket yes, full and then spray your paints into the water and give a gentle stir and then dip. Such and fun affect with tumblers.
How long so you have to let it dry before epoxy

Yes, its just a 5 gallon bucket that I use to dip, I dont really do anything to prep other then apply a base coat to the tumbler.

Pamela Stellfox I let my Water-hose water try and cool before spraying into my buckets and I never hydro dip in direct sunlight and I would say I spray fairly close to my water.

I can't stop the paint from getting inside because of the way I dip my cups, This can defiantly be done with a handled cup.

@@RebeccaEscott I have one from Dollar Tree that has a plastic ring around the bottom and top, Acetone will probably destroy it?
The paints were they gloss non gloss like what do you recommend. These came out stunning I just did my first two and it is so addicting lol but that gold and gum drop 😍

So I tried one this weekend and did same way but had lots of air bubbles , I did see that you say they go away but they look like gory bubbles do those away and if so how long do you let the cup dry for ?
jennifer tristan It doesn’t usually take to long to dry, If they are real bad they are not likely to go away.
Hey Jennifer. I’m trying my hand at hydro dipping, too. Did you find a way to eliminate/reduce air bubbles? I’m using a heat torch, too, and nothing seems to help.

I can NEVER mix my paints without it wrapping around my stick using a very thin stick, toothpick or popsicle stick. Have ANY idea WHY this could be happening?
Could Mod podge or polycrylic be used instead of epoxy? These are stunninggggg
marci jones Not for a long term use. Epoxy is the best sealer bc it’s fda approved and if the cup is cared for the right way they will last years.
Use Crystalac. It's nontoxic.

I love Crystalac. I've never used epoxy because of all of the allergy warnings. I couldn't take the risk. I do my cups right in our bedroom before we go to sleep.
Do you put them on the turner to dry?
Sherelle Hutcheson I usually put them on a dry rack for a couple hrs. But a turner would work too.
What temperature is the water? Does it matter if it’s cold or warm?

I hydro dipped mine but I had too many bubbles is there a fix ??
I just pop it really hard on my deck to rid most of the bubbles, and then I use a heat gun to push of any remaining water.

@@TheSewingBaddie Absolutely, when using heat, you wanna move quick so you don’t burn the paint so you should never be smelling the paint if so it’s most likely burned and that would not be good.

Does the tumbler texture matter? I’m seeing a lot of sublimation tumblers and am nervous they may be too smooth?

I’m trying to order some tumblers for marbling, but everyone I see looks shiny as if it’s epoxied or just super smooth. I’m nervous the marbling won’t grab onto it. Sorry I’m sure I’m not explaining it right
Ashley M typically they put a base coat on the cups white or black sometimes even clear

Keke Brown I don’t really prevent the paints from getting inside, so I do have to clean it with acetone and then soap and water.
So I wanted to try just your basic black & white marble look. Is there specific paints (spray paints) to use for this? As when I tried it, the paint I had created what looked like oil bubbles in the water which turned the “swirls” into smudged circles/bubbles, ONLY SMUDGE BUBBLES........ any suggestions would help drastically
Kevin Klein Yes, so in my experience with these hydro dips, don’t use hot water and if at all possible keep your bucket in the shade. Also I used both Krylon and rustoleum to achieve this effect. I really hope this helps.
I get big ol’ paint boogers when I use a skewer. How do you avoid that?
Maybe try a stick or even an old straw maybe to help swirl the paints, sometimes it’s hard to avoid them when using metallic paints. Also this technique is best done out of direct sunlight this can help insure that your water isn’t to hot, so your paints don’t freeze up when they hit the water. I really hope this makes since.
