There's a story from WW2 where a ship only had lemon jello and the crew were freaking out and wanted a different flavor so the cooks just added some food coloring and everyone thought it was cherry.
In 1979 my high school German teacher used them as a base for a days lesson. I don't remember the lesson, but I do remember that we all loved the Gummy Bears!
I recall that my stepfather, from New York introduced my small backwards town to gummy worms. Everybody thought I was trying to trick them into eating rubber fishing lure. I even had to eat one for them before they'd try them.
When I was three or four years old, a friend of mine introduced me to gummi bears. This was either 1979, or 1980. My friend was half German, and probably got them straight from Germany, since you said they didn't come to the United States until 1981. That never occured to me.
It depends where you have your gummibears from The German Haribo Gummibears have since 2007 6 flavours/colours (before there were just 5 flavours and the green gummibear was strawberry flavoured. That is how it is still with the us haribo gummibears) Dark Red: Raspberry Light Red: Strawberry Green: Apple White/colourless: Pineapple Orange: Orange Yellow: Lemon
Um, actually ... Since 2007, there are six flavors in a bag of Goldbären (at least in Germany) with apple flavor taking over green and strawberry now being a light red.
Um actually... Way fulfill every stereotype of the annoying person correcting someone lmao. You can say the same thing without "um actually." It'll look less "know-it-all"
@@SECONDQUEST I could have, but there are two rules; all of the corrections must be preceded by the phrase “Um, Actually...” and you can interrupt the statement at any time. I see most of you came away with the Gummy Bears intro song in your heads. I, on the other hand, never got past Tim Minchin in my head singing, "Bears don't dig on dancin'!"

I spent the first seven minutes of the video humming the theme from the Adventures of the Gummi Bears to have it validated by your mentioning of the show in the video.
I'll have to check em out. I hate the crunch of sugar coating. Feels like sand. Toxic waste sour candy are pretty good, but not really something you wanna snack on.
Using gummy bears for teaching German is not just about culture, but language since the German name, Gummibärchen, contains two aspects of German foreign to English: the ä and the diminuitive suffix "-chen"
America had a gummy candy long before Gummy Bears came from Germany. They are called Jujubes, and have a hard, chewy consistency. We also had Dots (soft) and Crows (licorice).
My buddy sent some haribo gummy bears from Germany the other week and they’re legitimately better than what we have in the states, I have to put in an order to get some more lol
I love gummy bears! My preferred brand for a while was Black Forest, but my work doesn't carry them anymore, except for the organic ones, which taste nasty to me. I'll eat the Haribo ones, but they're a little waxy for my tastes. I also had a coworker tell me you could soak gummy bears in vodka and then eat them, though I don't know why you would.
I think the taste varies depending on where you get them. Here we have 2 kinds of reds the lighter is strawberry and the darker is raspberry, while the green is apple, that's according to what the bag says.
On a whim I was wondering what how gummy candy in the shape of a little bear became so popular and lo and behold there's a youtube video detailing exactly that! nice!
Growing up I never even knew those brands were even out there. The brand of gummy bears I've always and only seen were the "Heide Quality Gummi Bears" I always thought that Haribo was the Heide but just revamped until I did some research and realized that the brand I grew up with was discontinued.
Just had some wine gums from a local supermarket. I plan on going back for some more. Not a fan of gummies but these were closer to the juju candies I prefer.
People may not realize that "HARIBO" was assumed to be a Japanese company for MANY YEARS! It sounded japanese to foreign ears, and the candy was sweet and cute. The package said, "made in germany"but our 7 year old selves just associated it with anything that was cute and asian and smelled of plastic and fruit!
Soak gummi bears in liquor for a week and refrigerate, they're fantastic. They grow about 2x height (4x volume). Don't do it at room temperature or they get gelatinous and sloppy. Serve next to toothpicks. Vanilla vodka is the biggest crowd pleaser, so if you're only doing one batch, use that. Use enough liquid to cover and add more if they start poking out. But try other liquors, too. Jager or sambuca (bonus points for black sambuca) is good if you like black liquorice. Gin and tequila are probably a bit much for most people. Chartreuse is good. Orange liquors are good choices. They actually soak up a lot of alcohol, so don't think you're going to eat 10 of them like candy.
the color-influences-taste segment reminds me of the beverage called Looks Like Orange Tastes Like Grape. ?or is it Looks Like Pineapple Tastes Like Cinnamon? ?or...
I remember going door to door in the area, I lived in selling the small bags of Gummibär for German Club when I studied German in high school back in the late 70s ( I graduated in 1980.) BTW, my German teacher would have thrown a fit if we pronounced the product incorrectly .
We were shocked to hear that jelly beans are polished with beetle excrement!? We would love to learn the history on how this came to be. Great content. Thank you👐
Exactly. People get it confused though because they are phylogenetically classified within the mammal order Carnivora. But like dogs, raccoons, et al, they are omnivores; as much as of 90% of their diet being plants
Huh. I always thought a high point in gummi bear history was when fans used to throw "jelly babies" at the Beatles...for some reason I don't now recall. Because they thought the Fab Four liked them?
I didn't realise gummy bears had different tastes for different colours! And I definitely didn't think they were fruit flavoured at all as all I taste is sugar.
I like Gummi Bears, but texture seems to be the hardest thing for various brands to get just right. Brachs used to be king for me, but it's been awhile so it wouldn't surprise me if they changed the recipe for the worse since last I had them... probably to make them vegan or something, like how Thin Mints and McDonald's french fries got ruined.
My sister sold gummy bears in her German club in the mid-1970s. I didn't like them then, I don't like them now. Jelly babies, especially the original ones, the corn starch free ones, I do like, not so hard.

5:15 and this is why some who have their first taste of Moxie soda from a can are shocked to discover that it does not, in fact, taste remotely like the orange anything that the can's hue strongly suggests. Gold bears are my favorite candy, twin snakes is a very close second. Haribo does a great sour gummy without relying on coatings.

Commenting separately about the vodka gummies. They're fantastic.
You soak them in vodka then eat them because it gets you drunk while tasting delightful. Just don't eat them too early.

I associate gummy bears with 3D printing thanks to Prusa including them in all their packages, and companies like Atomic Filament following along.
right now Haribo has released all pineapple and all blue raspberry gummies for their 100th anniversary

Pro Tip: put your gummy candies in the fridge. They’re just so much more delicious that way
