    I'm not a plumber, but enjoy diy. Previously my soldering has never been good. Your videos have guided me to get leak free joints. After a bit of practice on scrap I've refitted our bathroom including relocating 2 radiators, toilet, sink and bath with a concealled tri valve shower bath set up. Can't say some of the joints aren't snotty, but they are solid and leak free. Keep doing these top -tastic demos.
    Sorry to the plumbing community.....you've lost one job and I've saved a few quid !

    Should’ve put a test on!.....I take pride in my pipe work & soldering but I don’t get this obsession with seeing ‘no solder’!?!
    Yes make it neat & clean with no snots but I’d rather walk away knowing it won’t crack easily!........how many times have you pulled a weak joint apart because there was barely any solder on it???
    Keep up the good & entertaining work! 😀

      Paul W id rather see snot than a leak. I agree I try to make it tidy so I see a bit of solder but if it snots so be it. Just make sure you clean it up so the flux doesn’t corrode the pipe

    Ive always found it helpfull to bend a slight kink in the solder to make it easier to reach around the fitting.
    Personally id sooner see a bit of solder than have to drain everything down and reesolder a leaking joint.

    In nearly fifty years of doing plumbing I've only had 2 leaking joints ---my first two. Then I was told to clean everything including the inside of the fittings and use flux and finally don't be afraid of using solder. I don't care how" instagram plumbers " can make it pretty---I can make it leakproof all the time.

    James it’s also a great good rule to remember the capillary action ( suction of the solder) will always follow the heat , so if a vertical joint looks like it might go to forming a snot then draw the flame up the pipe work in the opposite direction and if it’s not drawing in encourage it by stroking the flame again down the pipe in the direction you require ! It’s a simple rule and works !

    I just made my first practice solder joints on the workbench. It was snotty and runny and blobby. But second one much better. Practise makes perfect. You learn by doing. Stupidest thing I realised is it’s much easier to hold the solder in your dominant hand so you have control of it!

  • @skoronesa1
    @skoronesa1 2 роки тому +2

    Older pipe is actually easier to solder and not get runs. It has a thicker oxide layer which resists the solder sticking.
    Some key tips for soldering an upside down joint CLEANLY are;
    -Only clean the area you want solder to stick to.
    -Wipe off excess flux.
    -Heat the pipe first until the solder sticks to the joint, and then the fitting. This will build up the oxide layer and roast any flux that has dripped. It's also important as it helps prevent the fitting from getting "roasted".
    -Apply just enough solder and apply it in several spots around the fitting.

    just to stick my £2.50's worth in there as a diyer thats learnt to solder from videos like this, mainly his earlier ones lol is not to add solder where your flame is, i noticed you did it a few times during the video but as you did you moved the flame, thats fine but i remember when i learnt on off cuts like what your using your not concentrating on the whole thing as a newbie and just on one thing at a time like the flame or the pipe or where you putting the solder, so basicly what im trying to say is if you stick the solder into the where the flame is heating you run a big risk of the flame just melting the solder and it running and dripping away from what your doing, my other tip as a diyer is the sound of the flame, i have the rotherburger n fries torch, when i first started i got used to the noise of the flame, theres a borderline of the flame making a noise, just under there being no noise was great for 15mm and slightly higher just so it was making a light roaring noise was great for 22mm, again im not a pro just a diyer but if i knew what ive just said when i had my first go id be happy as a pig in sheet

You can also get a thin reel of solder, rather than standard fat stuff. (Hard to find but thankfully one local supplier for me stocks it - one out of many)

    After skimming the comments after viewing this video,
    IMO it's missing 2 critical steps...
    1. Proper technique applying the flux. This is one of the most important steps... after GREAT cleaning with sandpaper or emery, you need to apply flux VERY liberally (you can't add too much if it comes to that), and pipes and fittings should be joined with both a push and at least a quarter, maybe even more than a half twist to ensure all flux is spread perpendicularly to the pipe's direction, ensuring solder will flow similarly. If solder flows only in the direction of the pipe, you will have gaps and leaks.
    2. You should immediately cool each solder joint immediately with a wet cloth and not wait for the joint to cool naturally. Until the solder has solidified, you do not have a solid joint.

    Quick question, I'm not a plumber just a DIY enthusiast. If they have banned the use of lead solder and flux that contains lead why is it still allowed for older house's to have lead pipes leading to the property?

    • @tonysu8860

      It's around because not all pipes and repairs are for potable water and there is a demand. If drinking water is involved, you shouldn't be using lead.

      @@rayc1503 always good when you can get the bulky press tool in, I spose that's what hep2o is made for these days :) I was always trained using the big gas bottles, lugging them up a roof space was a pain in the arse!

      I'm glad I've never had to do that lug massive cylinders about. I'll be glad the time when press fittings become more popular. Hopefully the prices will come down, slim chance though😜. Saying that more and more of the guys I see on site are using them too. The fluxuators actually not that bad. Go on treat yourself geez.😊

    Keep dabbing and dabbing until it’s completed soldered snots and all I’d rather it didn’t leak than look pretty it’s not a Christmas cake 🧁 but then I’m not a plumber 😂👍

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 3 роки тому

      Actually, proper technique is to simply dab once. If that isn't enough then you're doing things wrong... maybe not cleaning properly, not apply sufficient flux or properly, insufficient heat (too much heat can be bad, too).

    As an electrician who learned on electronics... it's interesting to see the differences between plumbing soldering and electronics/electrical. Most of it is the lead free thing. I will use leaded solder forever. I genuinely don't think the amount of lead leached in from lead based plumbing solder would be that damaging, but that is politically incorrect

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 3 роки тому

      It can be a really bad problem in plumbing. Lead doesn't leave the body and accumulates. So although lead solder is soooo much easier to use, it should only be used in non-potable plumbing.

    Would like to see these pressure tested after the solder, just to prove to everyone that it's all good.
    These vids really help be making my joints better, only DIY plumbing, but it all helps... thank you.

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 3 роки тому

      Your suggestion reminds me of some of my earliest mistakes. Pressure tested immediately after doing a solder job almost exactly as shown in this video... And blew out the joint. From that, I learned that it's essential to use a wet cloth to wipe down the solder job, it's not just to clean up and "prettify" the joint, it cools down and solidifies the molten solder.

  • @accountconfirmed9501
    @accountconfirmed9501 4 роки тому

    Silly question, why do you not solder all the way around the joint? Does the solder get drawn all around the joint automatically?

      If you apply your flux correctly, yes exactly as you guessed.

    Yeah all looks good on a bench, I also take pride in my workmanship however try making your solder that neat and actually on a job under floors up and close round the back of toilets and cisterns trying not to either melt something or scorch something so on and so fourth basically while on the job not so easy .

      Best advice I can give you is try to pre solder the union on its side, try to heat it up evenly. Lay it vertically on the nut and put your 15MM guide under the CU side.

    Two Q's...1) In reference to "Flux", how long should you wait to drink water...flush out a brand new soldering job? 2) How do you solder near a plastic housing from a whole house water filter???

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 3 роки тому

      1. If you do a soldering job properly, the pipe should be usable immediately.
      2. You can place (or purchase) shields when working nearly next to fragile or vulnerable objects.
