For ten days, a panicking Trudeau refused to condemn these comments. Now he comes clean.

My Dad came clean and converted from coal to natural gas in 1966 before the other Trudeau was elected. After moving to Victoria I came clean and converted from oil to NG in 1987 before this Trudeau was elected. Tell me again why we need the Liberals and their carbon taxes?

Switched in 1967 here. It worked out very well as right of way on 2 acres paid for the furnace and 200 yards of gas line to the house. Nobody missed coal especially the ice cold linoleum of winter mornings.
We've had a natural gas furnace for as long as I can remember, but do supplement it a little with an actual wood stove. We have a forest on our property and know how to practice proper conservation and promotion of growth.

Heat pumps are useless in most parts of Canada . You would need a secondary heat source in the dead of winter.

Even if the heat pumps worked, imagine the demand on the electrical grids and the supply issues involved in getting even 100,000+ households converted over to them. Talk about time to invest in Mitsubishi and Toshiba stock. Are there even enough contractors available to install them in short order? And that's not even getting into the discussion of how they are not "free".

@@brianconnolly5649 I live on Vancouver Island and I will take my woodstove and my generator over a heat pump any day. Heat pumps destroy older West Coast homes with mold and mildew. Running dehumidifiers 24/7, and a sump pump during the rainy season is an absolute necessity. Heat pumps make it worse. My house is as warm as a melting popsicle. When the hydro goes out, we're sh*t out of luck. I rely on the woodstove and the generator all winter. I can't imagine what it would be like for families in other Provinces!

I'd describe it a bit more as desperation and perhaps intensified dramatization which expects a sympathetic listener to interpret it as indignant outrage.
You can witness the same effect of someone who has been caught red-handed for a crime and how they get all performative in their indignant outbursts once subdued.

Wood Stove is the safest bet
If either where practical they should be able to compete against other options in the free market without any government incentives a heat pump just an electric furnace in the winter that will suck hydro and add humidity to the house being heated (because it's basically a backwards A/C unit) and EVs have existed since the 1800s and still remain less practical

Close, but inaccurate. PEI relies on wind and solar but they get the majority of their power from New Brunswick's nuclear plant. Nova Scotia which is right next to PEI currently has 4 active coal plants. Nevertheless Turdeau was wrong to say there's no more coal powered plants.

Not really. Heat pumps are not a reliable primary heat source for most Canadians. Our temp drops too low for them to work. That means you need another back up source like wood, or propane or natural gas. To qualify, recipients cant have any secondary heating systems.
At least when the temps drop, and the pumps don't work, they know which houses to check on so they can clear out the frozen bodies.
