we speak softly & carry a big stick
Not right now we are the laughingstock of the world with this piece of s*** President we have
Hell yeah
When have Americans ever spoken softly?
@@michaelfields3596 and we sure don't carry a big stick right now creepy Joe probably sent it to the Ukraine
Eh, I’d argue we’ve been quite loud throughout, although I agree with the sentiment.
You haven't seen Top gun??!!! You have to see it, and the sequel is even better, one of the best action movies ever made.
Congrats on the baby 🎉 Wishing you both and your family the best!
8:41 You English look like proud parents whenever they show U.S. doing something good with the Navy.
🥰
The being able to fight two wars in two areas simultaneously is a direct result of WWII, when we were fighting Germany in Europe and Japan in Asia. Then we had the Soviet Union and Red China at the same time.
We want to deter one major opponent from seeing the US fighting the other major opponent as a green light to cause trouble.
The 2 and a half rule protects the US because only one other nation has access to both major oceans, and attacking Russia via Siberia is so dumb that no tactical planning has even considered it other than as a short term neutralization of the other. The first set of US Navy "problems" (what most would call wargames) showed that against a serious threat, we can assume that the Panama canal will be destroyed in the first 48 hours. If Japan had done so, shortly after Pearl, it would have added 6 months onto any rebuilding the Pacific fleet, as well as utterly stopping the supplies going from AU to Great Britain, since the Suez was already under constant attack and transiting the Med would have been impossible for the large convoys. As such, we are basically required to maintain twice the Royal Navy, one deployed for threats in the Pacific Ocean, the other in the Atlantic. Without the Suez and Panama canals, moving from one region to the other takes weeks that we can rarely afford in war (consider the Panzergroup pulled from the Eastern front, missing the most important battles in 43, still being in transit on D-Day).
I love this channel. I served with some British soldiers. I thought it was funny we all spoke English but it was difficult to understand each other lmfao
Like the guy says in the movie Snatch, I'm in the country that apparently spawned the English language yet no one seems to speak it.
I served with a Scottish soldier. Highland. His British mates couldn't understand him.
@@anthonyfuqua6988 its kind of crazy. It was fun well as fun as combat can be.
@codystout5353 His first language was Gaelic and I've never heard such a thick Scottish accent. In combat it could've been a problem. If he gave orders. Thankfully he was only a step above Private. But he was from one of the Islands off the coast of Scotland that still had Norse influences. He was probably about 6'3" 240lbs. His friends said that was normal for those Islands. I had a British soldier pull me from a blasted humvee so I'll always be grateful.
@codystout5353 The U.S., a couple of months ago, said the British Army is no longer a Tier 1 force and barely a Tier 2. Most of my British friends agreed. They say the military has been hollowed out in the past 10 years or so.The best armies in Europe are probably France and Poland. France is constantly fighting in the Maghreb in Africa.
Another great video would be "US mothball fleet" or "US navy ghost fleet." (Those are the terms I used in YT search.) It tells you about the reserve fleet of warships the US has. It is one part of the military many have forgotten about over the years. I have yet to see anybody react to this topic or the videos.
An addition to this video. We have far more then 11, last I looked we have something like 20-22 Carriers. Only 11 are active duty in one shape or another a few are usually getting upgrades/maintenance the other 10-11 are in the Mothball fleet.
There are 9 additional amphibious assault ships that can operate the F-35B that are normally in service carrying Marines. I believe there are additional small deck amphibious ships in mothballs, but they would need some work to be able to support the F-35B. As far as I know, there are no full size carriers in the mothball fleet...the Nimitz class has been in service so long that all of the older carriers have either been scrapped, are museum ships.✌
Update: The last of the conventional full size carriers, the JFK, appears to be decommissioned and is due to be scrapped, but has not been broken apart yet. My guess is that it is in no condition to be returned to service, but I could be wrong.✌
There are 11 aircraft carriers, not 20. Any old outdated carrier that is a museum is not able to be used in a future conflict. That would be like trying to take a musket into modern combat.
@@twelvestitches984 There's twenty total US aircraft carriers. Eleven Super and nine amphibious.
There is not much in the way of reserve fleets anymore. It's just to costly to keep them in repairable condition and Nuke Carriers really don't sit around for long since they deteriorate without costly major maintenance.
When I was stationed at Fort Eustis, VA I remember looking out onto the James River and seeing that huge James River Reserve Fleet looming in the distance. Much smaller today, but it was incredible back in the 80s.
"speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far". Theodore Roosevelt Jr
We had a 600-ship Navy under Reagan.
The US currently has two Aircraft carriers under construction (USS Kennedy & USS Enterprise) and they are expected to serve about 50 years. The Kennedy will be delivered to the Navy around Ju e of 2025 and the Enterprise around March of 2028. If all goes as planned the USS Doris Miller will be built and enter service around 2032 and construction will begin in January of 2026.
The US could decomission the Nimitz the oldest carrier in 2026 or keep it active for another 3 or 4 years. The same goes for the next Carrier Eisenhauer which could be retired earlier or later depending on need but could remain in service till 2032. If this was to happen there would be 14 active carriers in 2031
My first cousin served on a USN aircraft carrer and died in an accident. One of the saddest things you'll ever experience is a three-gun salute, a band playing taps, and a soldier giving the folded flag that rested over the coffin to the mother. Not a dry eye at the graveyard that day.
Definitely tell your a teacher. Picking up that misspelling right away.
Britain used to have a law requiring the Royal Navy to have more ships of each type than the next 2 largest navies combined. This changed after WW1.
Not What You Think is a great channel, glad to see you folks checking it out.
Too quick of a withdrawal from Afghanistan, there are over 175 Americans left behind. Some are being held hostage today! Should have gotten everyone out before pulling out our military.
If you ever see an aircraft carrier, you will be overwhelmed by the size of it! I was on board of the USS Constellation "Conti" during the Viet-Nam war. It is impressive how that floating city works harmoniously with airplanes, helicopters, marines, doctors, nurses, mechanics and many type of specialists. The carrier does no sail alone, is has many support ships, cruisers, frigates, destroyers and a couple of nuclear subs. That is how you project power!
We actually have 12 with the introduction of the new Ford class
First, a US President can't just change the readiness for war just because he wants to. Second, do you remember WW2, America was fighting the Germans in Europe, Africa and Japan the South Pacific. The ability to fight 2 wars at the same time will never change for the US.
The US has 14 supercarriers, and 11 assault carriers.
(11 Nimitz class 3 ford class super carriers) (8 wasp class, 3 America class)
5:30. To be prepared for any future 2 front war was basically heavily influenced by the US involvement in War War II. The US deployed fleets off the West Coast of the US to fight Japan in the Pacific Ocean and then the US had fleets in the Atlantic aiding the Allies in Europe. Beesleys, you are presently watching "Band of Brothers." Considering watching "The Pacific" as well if you get a chance. It is the sequel to "Band of Brothers," but it depicts the US troops fighting on the Pacific front against Japan.
some of the military bases in foreign countries are just Depots for equipment and ammo for logistics and other bases are small drone fields to service and maintain drones
More than 11, if we need them.
Yep. Technically, we have like 20+. But only 11 are constantly active.
Indeed...currently there are 9 additional amphibious assault ships that can operate the F-35B.
And let's not forget our ability to ramp up to wartime production levels. No country, including China, has anything close to that ability and capacity.
11 operational and 5 or 6 in drydock, and a few more dockside ready to go ...
Great video thanks for posting
According to google, one nimitz class carrier takes 6yrs to build.
I was reading a story stating that *ONE US Navy Aircraft Carrier* has more aircraft than most of the world's air forces. And we have *eleven Carriers!*
We have 3 more Ford class aircraft carriers under construction as we speak, as the number of total carriers by 2027 is supposed to be up to 14.
I’m an American and the reason we don’t have more Carriers is because we can’t build them fast enough..
Which doesn't explain why we are retiring older ones that could be modernized and retained if we thought we needed them.
Those 11 carriers carry more ac than most world’s airforces and we used to have mor than 11 back in the day but 11 became the standard number.
The others that we have are in what is called The Reserve or mothball Fleet
FYI One carrier costs 7 billion dollars to operate over 5 years. That is something to think about if you think we have too much government.
He mentions war preparedness. But doesn’t talk about the fact that in zones around the world hit by hurricane or tsunami, the US Navy is often FIRST international response on scene.
11 carriers because they have protect Europoor
My sister in-law serves on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz
The white and orange aircraft shown landing on the carrier is actually a modified British aerospace Hawk that we use to train our naval aviators, called the t-45 goshawk. Ship’s company jokingly refer to them as clown jets, because of the paint scheme and “green” pilots
Some say we have 11 aircraft carriers but have 22 helicopter carriers.
When I was on Army active duty I deployed to Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, back in the year 2000... I spent a lot of time in the British sector with the Brits, and we had a wonderful working relationship. I love the United Kingdom and I always watch your videos... Congrats on expecting a baby!
We also have mini carriers for vertical takeoff jets and helicopters.
there are also 31 Amphibious assault ship which are mid size carriers that mainly use chopper and f35b/harrier for landing and supporting marine assault force
You are correct that the US has additional ships with flight decks like aircraft carriers, but only some of the amphibious ships of the US Navy are able to act as "aircraft carriers". Currently, only the 7 Wasp class and 2 America class Amphibious Assault Ships are able to operate the F-35B from their flight decks.✌
@@iKvetch558 Lets be honest, wasp class ships are about the same as most of the worlds aircraft carriers.
And the V-22 osprey there's the LHD with a smaller helicopter flight deck but large well deck for landing craft and both types are full of Marines just waiting to go to shore and tear shit up
@@TheGerrok That is true...and the America class ships are even better. But the US normally uses the Wasps and Americas to form the core of Marine Expeditionary Units at sea. I believe there have been tests with leaving the Marines at home and carrying a bunch of F-35Bs instead, but it is not what the ships usually do. Since they are designed to carry so many troops and vehicles, they are not as efficient as carriers as some of the other countries' carriers...but you are pretty much correct. ✌
@@JustMe-gn6yf LHD is the wasp class. Are you talking about the LPD or the LSD class?
Hey guys! Congrats on the upcoming little one :) !! Love the channel!!
I wanted to make a point of distinction here though about the Iraq war. At the 5:59 mark you mentioned to "We're learning about that one". With utmost respect, you guys are doing your other series, the day by day video series about the Iraq war. It's the war WITH Iraq...but it's in Kuwait. It's Operation Desert Storm. from Jan-March of 1991. We had Operation Desert Shield...to try to protect Kuwait from Saddam's forces taking over from Iraq.
When he entered...the Shield became a Storm...to get Iraq out of Kuwait. However...for good or for bad, we didn't follow them into Iraq at that point and overthrow his corrupt government. Even though at that point, he'd already used poison gas on almost 1/2 million people. Our goal was to get him out of Kuwait...and that was done quite effectively in 2 months. Then...that war...Operation Desert Storm...was over.
The action listed in THIS video...was part of Operation Enduring Freedom, or our 20+ year-long global war on terror that began after the attacks of 9/11. Among their many other horrific travesties, Saddam's regime had aided Al Qaeda in the past...and following the attacks, we made it clear that not only Al Qaeda, but those governments giving aid and or asylum to any member of Al Qaeda would be in the crosshairs of our military. I hope this helps explain not only that there was a difference in the 2 wars, but also what the differences were.
Thanks for your continuous amazing content, and again...Congratulations on the news of the little one on its way. :) God Bless!
There were maybe 8 carriers during ww2 maximum but over three years only enterprise still was intact. We lost so many including both wasp and hornet which were designed to take massive beatings yet still got sunk. We scuttled most of those ships ourselves due to damage and making sure any sensitive information is kept secret. These carriers were replaced with nuclear powered ships in the the 50s allowing faster speeds and better control over the ship without having to ever refuel. Now we are getting the Gerald r ford class which is in a league of its own as it’s so advanced that constantly training is the only way to keep up.
You are correct that the US did not have many carriers...on December 7, 1941 there were 7 fleet carriers in the US Navy...with Wasp and Hornet being the last 2 to join the fleet...and there was only 1 escort carrier. The next fleet carrier the US Navy completed was the USS Essex in late 1942, but after that a large number of fleet carriers were completed...the US Navy had 28 fleet carriers in service in May of 1945...along with 71 escort carriers. ✌
The US started WW II with 7 aircraft carriers. The US built 24 Essex Class fleet carriers during WW II (granted a few of them were commissioned after the end of the war), 9 light carriers, and over 100 escort carriers.
You have to Love the Bread & Butter reference in this video!!!
In reality, we actually have way more carriers of you factor in the smaller amphibious ships (which care like 2 aquadrons of F35s each) which themselves are, at least size wise, is equal to many countries mainline carriers.
Fun fact: The second largest air force in the world is operated by the United States Navy.
11 is not enough. We have many more on the way. 1 nearing completion and one with it's first plates laid. With more planned in the next decade.
You don't hear about the withdrawal because it was intentionally or accidentally botched. Not a good look.
America has become the police and humanitarian helpers for the world. We need a huge military to accomplish this.
8:28 It was about 20 fleet carriers and about 80 light/escort carriers. The fleet carriers could carry about 80-90 planes while the light/escort carriers could only carry about 25-30.
3:12 bread is a vehicle for delivering other foods or condiments, how about that? Lol
Oh cool I didn't know that
Actually the US has 20 Carriers. We have 11 super carriers with more of the new Ford Class on their way which will last 100 years and will have laser among classified weapons with a huge powerhouse
French fries are just a utensil for eating ketchup.
I eat my french fries straight, like a man! LOL 😊(actually, I do add salt!) Truly the best way is however you best enjoy them 🤔
The fact that the US sent just aircraft carriers to sink the Japanese Battleship Yamato in 1945 was a testament to overall US production numbers, strength, and battle strategy.
QUESTION:
Why do we have 11 active carriers?
ANSWER:
'MURRICA!!!! That's why!
We give up a lot to be safe....have you seen how many bases we have around the world.

Big stick ideology, big stick diplomacy, or big stick policy refers to President Theodore Roosevelt's foreign policy, "speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far".
End Quote!
I think there are 11 Super carriers is what they meant.
Actually 20 fixed wing aircraft carriers.
The USN is supposed to have at least 12 aircraft carrier. That is so there can be six assigned to the Atlantic and six assigned to the Pacific.
The USA has such a large Navy (military in general), because of the old military adage ..... "You can fight your enemy at their home, or yours." We choose to fight them at theirs!
To be able to protect on a global scale
When I was in the Navy in 1983 we had 16 and they wanted 20 to 22. Back then a Carrier Task force cost 1 milliion dollars a day to have deployed and abut 1/4 of a million whilst sitting in port.
So yea, we have 11 new nuclear ships now, and back then only 5 were nuclear. They keep them in way better shape then they could ships like Kitty Hawk and Forestal back then.
8:28 Eighteen aircraft carriers? By the end of WWII in 1945, the United States Navy had added 99 aircraft carriers to it's fleet. There were two types of aircraft carriers, the Fleet Carriers and the Escort Carriers. The United States Navy had two naval fleets, the Atlantic Fleet and the Pacific Fleet. By the beginning of 1944, the U.S. Pacific Fleet alone was larger than the navies of all the warring powers combined, and this isn't even counting the US Atlantic Fleet. More than anything else, the use of carriers in the U.S. Navy was determined early in WWII after the Battle of the Coral sea, and the Battle of Midway. These two battles dictated the future of aircraft carriers for the US Navy. Up until those battles, most of the upper ranks in the US Navy were still diehard Battleship proponents.😉Peace🕊
Um 🤔 so just in case we can fight 11 conventional wars simultaneously .
The US Navy has more than 11 Aircraft Carriers. They have 11 Super Carriers but many more if you count support carriers etc.
I assume you are referring to the amphibious assault ships and other classes of VTOL capable ships. We don't any longer have "light carriers" capable of carrying lesser numbers of fixed wing aircraft as in WW II.
@@BTinSF I was but I also thought the US still had some (or a few) light carriers. Thank you for the correction.
Why do we have 11 carriers? Because 12 would just be ridiculous.
We were the only country on earth in World War II that had major forces in two large conflicts against Japan and Germany. We did have a little help from some nations with the war on Japan, but it was minimal compared to the forces we had involved and we were also the backbone of the fighting forces in Europe on the western side.
Even the Russians know this
@@gregorydawson5126 of course they do. It was the Soviet union. However, that was the major force that defeated Germany.
If you're going to watch the new Top Gun movie (which I'd recommend), you also need to watch the original one first.
Our carriers go to 11.
we actually have 20 carriers.... 11 of which are supercarriers
A carrier fleet has 56 ships.
Yup, good french bread is just a reason to eat butter
In the same way that chicken nuggets are for the dipping sauces.
We have all of those carriers because well... we only had 2 options. We could either build a bunch of carriers or walk around with out dick hanging out so everybody could see how big it is. Fun Fact: 1 Nimitz Class Super Carrier is the 17th largest airforce on the planet and we have like 11 of them
Thomas Shelby- “because we fuckin can”
I imagine we have eleven aircraft carriers in the U.S. because we not only have to protect our own country but a good portion of the rest of the world as well. The US is the protectorate for a number of other countrys - for many who cant defend themselves we seem to be the worlds police force. Taiwan is a good example, though they are not officially a protectorate of the US we have strong positive relations with Taiwan so we currently have forces in place to protect Taiwan from China.
And think at one time we (the USA) not only had 11 Aircraft Carriers in Active Duty, but we also had 4 Battleships at the same time in almost a 900 Ship Navy under Ronald Reagan which was the most powerful Naval power since WWII. Especially since two of the Battleships lost four of there dual 5 inch turrets but multiple Tomahawk and Harpoon Lauchers in their replacements spots.
Reagan authorized a 600 ship navy, but only 585 were completed and commissioned.
Also, the video is wrong regarding how many bases the US has overseas. The claim of 750 bases spread around 80 nations is false. America has access to roughly 350 bases that are foreign owned and operated, including several in Great Britain.
@@thefederalist6786 okay so I was wrong on the number of ships. I stand corrected Thank You for putting me straight. But I was in the Marines from 75-87 at that time.

Well. I believe the Battleship Iowa was degraded after the second turret blew up. The Navy never repaired it. That's why it was retired first. Not enough replacement parts
@@adamsears1403 Adam,
All four battleships were retired due the cost of maintaining them, so whether or not Iowa had suffered the tragic explosion she would have been decommission.

The US Air Force is the largest air force in the world. The second largest is the US Navy.
US Aircraft Carriers are good for "fighting the last war". And by "the last war" I mean WWII...NOT Vietnam...NOT Iraq....NOT Afghanistan. They keep the military-industrial complex RICH. That's about it.
I just wish all these young folks with so much expertise on the military and politics would spend 2 or more years serving the country on active duty. Very few of them do--they just hone their expertise playing Call of Duty or some such.
This one goes to eleven.
You need to breathe deeper my friend. Every video you are trying not to yawn. And I'm sure it's not boredom. LOL you're not taking in enough oxygen which means not deep enough breath which tends to happen as we get older. Shallow breathing leads to more yawning.

11 carriers but 9 Air Wings? Sounds like the Air Wings don't have much down time. I don't understand this
The U.S. has 9 carrier strike groups on duty at any time, 8 based in the U.S. and one based in Japan.
@@michaelmcgowen8780 Ok so if there's a carrier, no 1 Air Wing is designated to each carrier. It's just down to whoever is available stateside? Japan is always flying I guess
@@adamsears1403 Each of the Air Wings IS designated to a particular carrier. For example, CAW 1 is assigned to the USS Harry Truman. However, each CAW have 5 squadrons on active assignment, with 5 more in reserve. These are rotated regularly to keep fresh squadrons available.

As an American, I’d say our country is entering a political period that should terrify the world. I don’t say that as a threat; I say it as a warning. Our military is essentially the biggest gun in the world, and we’re at a point here where the reigns of that great power might fall into the hands of extremists. We’re primed to be a country that’s slipping into minority rule. Apologies, in advance, for any atrocities we commit.
(I just wanted to add my credentials: B.A. political science, MPA, and a focus on American politics and constitutional law, as well as international relations)
You obviously are too young to remember the divisiveness of earlier periods such as the later Vietnam era when National Guardsmen were shooting college kids on campuses and the Democrats couldn't even hold a peaceful convention in Chicago or, going back further, the 1920s when the Army was routing veterans from the Washington Mall and the KKK had 2 million members and they marched through the streets. The US has had turbulent politics since its founding. FYI, I was both an undergrad and doctoral candidate in the 1960s and remember cities burning, curfews, machine gun emplacements on hospital rooftops in center cities and so on. Time moves on and our country endures.
