  • The Canadian government is investigating the circumstances of why some Jamaican migrant workers were sent back to the Caribbean after holding a one-day strike in protest of their workplace and living conditions at a farm in Ontario. BG has the details. Let us know in the comments, Should the federal government do more to protect temporary foreign workers?

    This is infuriating. This should not happen anymore, we've known about this for years. Temporary workers should be hooked up with a buddy system, put in touch with Canadian volunteers who can help keep an eye on employers and continue the fight even if the worker is sent home, someone you can absolutely count on to help stop the abuse.

    • @ianweniger6620
      @ianweniger6620 11 місяців тому +1

      buddy systems are tricky when farms are remote and workers must live on employers' property. That's why unions do this work: they have some resources to intervene.

      Or they could actually just pay Canadians the proper wage to do it. There 100% isn't a need for illegal or foreign workforce. Especially if there is a homeless population or improvised ppl

    We should be grateful these worker come and work our land! The very least we could do is provide appropriate safety training and equipment. Along with clean and safe living quarters.

      Farm work is not slavery. Most farm work is done with machines, mainly operated by White men. Who get contracts $$$ to farm. There's literally no reason to bring these ppl in. They want to be here, they will accept the cheap wage and less than living conditions. Also, these ppl drive down wages.

    How dare these modern day slaves have any standards, right? The federal government could careless, there are probably thousands more slaves "migrant workers" lining up to come. If I had a family member thinking about this I would 100% advise against this!

    Who is profiting off these fine men and woman back home in their native lands? What deals have been struck with Canadian government start there first. When it’s all said and done don’t complain about paying quadruple for farmed foods which these men are tending to. It’s a horrible thing either way my heart goes out to these men and woman who come from other lands for a better life only to be enslaved even by their own country if such is the case

    There seems to be a grave issue with the way some employers choose to carry on business throughout Canada. As with the fast food industry also, employers are choosing TFWs over domestic workers because they know they can abuse their power over TFWs who don't know their rights. The fact that death on our farms is being taken lightly by this government shows they don't give a crap.
    Edit: *some, so as to not generalize. Some farmers have great relations with their workers

    I think its despicable that the government hasn't done anything to protect these workers. We all know that without these workers we cannot maintain a healthy lifestyle in canada, because without them fresh fruits will not make it to supermarkets, farmers markets etc so why not put protection in place for them so that they will want to come back and not feel threatened. It's honestly heartbreaking and I hope some sort of resolution can be put into place.
