Trevor Lawrence proved that no prospect is truly unsinkable once they hit the pros, and I've always considered the "generational" talent moniker to be misleading in any sport. No prospect can truly succeed anywhere they go and no matter what coaching they receive, and it's unfair to treat them like that's the expectation.

I think there’s a whole lotta context left out in the way Caleb played by only observing the offense. He HAD to always look for the big play with the way Southern Cal’s defense was historically terrible. Caleb scored 40+ points on average only to see every lead slip through his fingers and it’s genuinely wild to me that that gets overlooked. My heart was shattered countless times watching him NEEDING to play damn near perfect or they would lose. His sophomore season he was quite literally Superman leading that team to 11-3 and I didn’t think it could be any worse than that until watching them this season. Great vid Marcus I’ll be looking forward to the next one dude!

that doesnt really make sense to me. If you're defense is doing poorly, you AVOID big plays, and play conservatively to allow for both your defense to rest and to control clock management. It's not like they score the longer you take to score.

What? Who won the last 15 Super Bowls? Mahomes, Stafford, Brady, Mahomes, Brady, Nick Foles, Brady, Manning, Brady, Russ, Flacco, Eli, Rodgers, Brees, Big Ben. That's 13/15 straight up elite QBs, and Foles and Flacco played out of their absolute minds those years. This year has absolutely not proven "it doesn't matter who the QB is as much". If guys like Mahomes (10th pick), Allen (7h pick / 3 QB taken), and Lamar (32nd pick / 4th QB taken) aren't tabbed as "generational" prospects, then nobody should be considered generational. It seems impossible to actually identify "generational". Just look at how many teams whiffed on Joe Montana (3rd round pick), Tom Brady (6th round pick), and Rodgers (24th pick). Nobody knows what generational means or looks like evidently, so let's stop trying to tab prospects as such.

You showed Caleb do both quick throws and heavy improv deep throws. The key question is, does he understand when it's time to do each one? If he's simply a hot dog gunslinger, then he'll go down in flames. However, I don't think he's that simple. I think he will make the adjustment to faster defenders, cutting down on the scrambling. His team should also provide him with faster, more sure-handed receivers that can gain extra yards themselves, making his scrambles less needed.

That said, in the last 15yrs the following QBs were “can’t miss”
    2011- Cam Newton
    2012- Andrew Luck
    2020- Joe Burrow
    2021- Trevor Lawrence
3 of the 4 seemingly lived up to the hype with Lawrence going from “maybe it was Urban Meyer’s fault” to “maybe last year’s playoff win was a fluke”. None of them won a Super Bowl with Newton and Burrow both getting to one early in their careers but also were plagued by injuries like Luck who decided to retire early vs stick it out with Indy.
I see a lot of similarities to those guys in Williams, whether it would be bad coaching leading to poor development, possible injuries derailing his development or worst of all he loses his passion for the game and takes his money and retires before he gets hurt too bad like Luck.

    1. He played the last 2 years in the PAC-12 which lead to him playing late games and very few got to see him play live on any sort of consistent basis.
    2. Recency Bias. USC was awful this year and wasn't anywhere close to making CFP. IMO, he is a truly special prospect. I think the term generational is a bit misunderstood at this point and honestly needs to just stop being used. He's a must have franchise QB, just like Kyler, Burrow, Lawrence and even Luck were. The current argument here around Chicago is between keeping Fields while trading the #1 pick for a boatload of draft picks or picking Williams and moving on from Fields. Think all the bust comments stem from things off the field. Things like rumors being leaked about him not wanting to go to certain teams, wanting an ownership stake in a team as a rookie, etc. Seems pretty clear that to succeed as a QB in the NFL the game itself needs to be your addiction. Buying your own hype almost always leads to catastrophic failure in the league. Because you're going to a bad situation a lot to begin with, and you're expected to turn it around. You have to display good traits in these times.

Great video, we have to stop using the term "generational talent." Luck was drafted in 2012, Lawrence in 2021 and now we have Williams. The way I understand it, a generation occurs every 20 or so years. Why can't a guy just be the best QB in this draft?

  • @philibusters23
    @philibusters23 9 місяців тому

It sounds like Marcus is using a similar definition to the one I am using, but my understanding of generational for the NFL is 10 years. Admittedly that number works less well for quarterbacks, kicker, punters. The idea is that a good NFL career will last about 10 years so every 10 years 90% of the players have turned over. Sure some O-Lineman might make it 14 years in the league just like some people live to 100 despite the average life expectancy being in the 70's, but in general a 10 year NFL career is a good career. You could quibble with that a QB, where the talent is more elite because unlike other positions, only one player can start for a team, and where the rules try to protect players extending their career and argue, generational for QB should be like every 15 years, but in general I like the 10 year rule for generational.
Broadly speaking there are about 10 positon groups
    1. QB
    2. RB
    3. TE
    4. WR
    5. O-Line (and you could break that down in to T, G, and C's if you wanted)
    6. DE
    7. DT's
    8. Offball linebackers
    9. CB's
    10. S
So a generation is 10 year and there are 10 positions, you'd expect one positional group to have a generational talent per draft cycle. Certainly some classes would have none and some would have 2 or 3.
I do think the term generational is probably overused; however the people who complain about act like a generation is like a human generation (25 to 30 years) and that there are not 10-12 position groups so we should only hear about generational talents once every 25 years.

    1. Most of his highlights are him scrambling out of the pocket for 4-5 seconds before throwing the ball. Looks great for highlight reels, but I don’t know how often that will fly in the NFL
    2. His college teammates hated him. He is not a very likable guy from what I’ve heard; which potentially could be a locker room issue in the future
    3. He wants an ownership stake in whatever team drafts him. I mean… really? This just shows he’s a selfish guy that puts himself first at all times.
I still believe he can be a top 10 QB in the league, but I don’t think he’s going to be a hall of famer (generational)
