If you go to the trouble of removing the ignition switch, often the key code is stamped somewhere on it, and maybe also on the other locks using the same key. If you find the key code, that's all you need to get a replacement made from a motorcycle dealer or locksmith.

If you get the lock out you could just get the pins out so a blank key would work. Quicker to get you going. Would anyone think that your lock works with any key? 🤔

mark edge with a black marker to make easier to see the wafer marks. Also most switches have a key code stamped on them
Yeah I got my key code and bought a key on ebay.
If your a mechanic and not a locksmith. Best way to quickly make a double sided key is to
1.). get your first side done with the file as the video showed.
2.) take a second key blank and take a pair of vise grip pliers and put the two keys identically together and clamp down with vise grips
3.) use a Dremel to match the new key blank with the already cut key.
4.) flip key over and cut the second side of the second key as well as the second side of the first key.
Hope that makes sense in words. I’m an automotive locksmith so I have machines to do this. But I also have had to do this when in a pinch. Hope this helps someone
@smallengineshop is it possible to use a screw extractor (e.g. 2-3mm) to remove the two block cylinders instead of drilling them?
I lost my motorcycle key took it apart and order a key with the code # . Looking i the cylinder I though met be with a file and a blank key I mit be able to make one . Thanks for the video you just gave me the will to make one good job 👍
There should be law that requires manufactures to provide replacement keys with proof of ownership. Many car companies do this already but its ridiculous the heartache people go through for something as common as the misplacement/loss of a vehicle to which legal proof of ownership is demonstrable.

did Ignition key hole water resistance? it's has hole for water drop leak if accidentally water going inside the key hole?
I own a 1985 Ninja 600R, which sat in my garage for 35+ years, and now ready to get her back on the road, bike was stolen in 88, but got back in 89 so I have a separate ignition key, which I had made from the code, and was able to make another set of keys for the helmet/seat locks, but it doesn't match the gas tank, any thoughts on where else to find the original key code for the bike? Any help would be great. Would prefer not to drill the lock out, thanks

I'm assuming if you want the key to be double sided u do the same to both sides of the key. Cool. So where do you get blanks? I've done house keys before, but they're usually easier to get to the pins. But u gotta have extra pins if you lose one or a spring. Thanks man.

So correct me if I’m wrong but if you take the wafers out you could technically start the bike with anything you can fit in the ignition or what?

If you have a key that does fit but the waifers are proud, FILE THEM FLUSH,
This way,you have a solution where you cannot get a blank,which is almost
always the case.
Many keys fit,many locks,it is not unusual to find European car keys for
the job.
so in theory of the wafers were removed a blank key would work?

When my ignition lock stopped working I just bypassed it with a toggle. I put the key in for show and flip the toggle, and away I go
Where’d you put the toggle
It's kind of tucked in where the seat meets the battery cover. I did not install it permanently it kind of just sits there. I still put the key in the lock and turn it before I flip the switch so anybody watching thinks it's just a kill switch not the actual ignition. I also used bullet connectors in a way that I can take the toggle out and hardwire it straight through With no tools in case the toggle ever fails.
wouldn't it be easier to just file down the Pins?
If you just file down the pins. Any blank key could start the bike

you may find some places are reluctant to sell you a blank for obvious reasons
