    I love the board game/disc golf alliance! The two hobbies I enjoy the most.

    Using the Stonemaier discs, you could make a Throwing Realms trilogy challenge! I might have to give it a shot and use 3 SM discs for the front 9 and 3 different ones for the back 9.

      This would be so cool! Maybe Jamey would want to put on a tournament like this with some Stonemaier fans before or after a Stonemaier Games Design Day!

    Libertalia is the game that came to mind when you talk about having the same set of tools across all players.

    I did a Trilogy Challenge last year and am again in a few weeks, it is a great way to try some new discs and/or a new course and the one I do also raises a bunch of money for charity at the same time. The "Trilogy" is 3 companies all partnered/owned under the same umbrella (Dynamic Discs/Latitude 64/Westside). If you liked the Trilogy Challenge you should check out a MVP Circuit Challenge as well, there are many to choose from on their site. It is a similar format, 3 discs, 1 round, 3 brands from produced by one larger company (MVP/Axiom/Streamline). I played one already this year and had a blast even though it was pouring down rain most of the round. The 3 pack of discs is solid too, the Fission Watt putter I got from it is one of my new favorites and went straight in my bag.

      That's great! I didn't know about the MVP version--we'll have to try that.

      @@jameystegmaier MVP actually has a few different versions this year. They had the Glitch World Championship in the spring through early summer and that one was 3 different 1 speed discs in the pack. The Circuit Challenge is currently available and is a 3 disc challenge like Trilogy and is available to be run until September 30th. In the fall they have Space Race events, which are meant to be shorter holes on smaller courses and the player pack of discs for it all glow in the dark so the events can be day or night.

    My favorite tournament style! I think another plus with this one is it feels more relaxed than some of the other tournaments I've done. I think it was last year that I got pretty lucky with the putter that was used. It was the same one that I use in my bag 😆
    The only downside I have is that there are shots that you want to make like a hyzer shot with an overstable disc but only have stable discs to choose from.
    Still a ton of fun and makes you reevaluate how you're going to shape your shot.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  3 місяці тому

      I agree that this format provides an excellent tournament vibe (as frustrating as it was early on to not quite realize what my discs wanted to do--and I practiced with them after picking them up!)

    MTG has run Duplicate Sealed (each player receives an identical pool of cards from which to build their deck) several times as a portion of the Invitational, often with cards created specifically for that event. Curating a card pool that is both interesting and has a flat power level across all colours is a tough task, however, so I've found it tends towards similar construction those competing.
    A middle-ground compromise that I've enjoyed is playing Block Constructed, where players follow standard deckbuilding rules but can only play cards from a small number (usually 3) of sets (this was developed as a format when MTG used the Block structure for their releases, where two or three sets would share a theme and explore mechanisms that intertwined). You could even play it Highlander, restricting each card to a single copy in a player's deck rather than four, making it easier and less costly for the players to have access to the cards they need. I do think that would mean you'd need to be a bit more careful about which sets to include, and possibly include more sets, but it might not.
    On topic, did players who had never used the Trilogy discs get any time on the disc golf equivalent of the driving range before the event to get a feel for how they handled?

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  3 місяці тому

      It's interesting that Duplicate Sealed resulted in very similar decks. I remember the days of Block Constructed--that was fun.
      People could start their round pretty much whenever they wanted, so we had time to practice a bit. :)

    In any game when all information is available, and players don’t have specific setups or asymmetric powers, everyone uses the same pieces (discs) is what you are describing right? Azul, Dominion, The Quest For El Dorado (?), Age of Steam, RA among others.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  2 місяці тому

      I would say those work for this comparison (or are pretty close, at least).

    What are your thoughts playing a round where your opponents pick the disc you throw; with the specification they pick a driver when you need one and not intentionally pick a putter of course.

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  2 місяці тому

      That would be fun to try, especially if there's a positive connection--like, I pick a disc from my back for you to throw, and we combine our score at the end of the round?

  • @WhatUpRob
    @WhatUpRob 3 місяці тому +1

    I play a particular style of Pokémon called GLC. Everyone has access to all the same cards, assuming you have a copy of that card or can purchase one, but from all the legal cards you can use any of them when constructing a deck with the specifications:
    Must be monotype aka all fire or all water
    Singleton aka 1 copy max of each card (except basic energy)
    So your fire deck can theoretically be the exact same thing I build.
    Also running mirror matches is a thing.

    I know nothing about disc golf, but I just thought of another board game connection you could have mentioned. Imagine a disc golf tournament where the organizer gathers everyone at the first hole and then selects, from a large bag, 3 discs that everyone is going to play with on the first 6 holes. The bag contains every disc that SM sells on its website. Then, the starter selects 3 more discs that will be used on holes 7-12, and again 3 more to be used on holes 13-18. Since these are SM discs, they all happen to have names inspired by board games.
    So here's my challenge: which board game inspired this tournament format?

    • @jameystegmaier
      @jameystegmaier  3 місяці тому

      That's a really neat idea, Steven! The only tricky thing there is that a key part of disc golf is having at least a little choice as to which disc you use in different situations--it was drastically change the game to not have that choice at all. :)
      I'm not aware of a board game inspiring this tournament format. Do you know of one?

    • @StevenStJohn-kj9eb

      @@jameystegmaier Ha ha! Actually, it's just the format of Rolling Realms. 3 realms chosen at random for the first third of the game, a new 3 realms for the second and third parts of the game, add up your total score. :)
