I may never have listened before to Britten's own conducting of this early masterpiece, though I have to several others. I believe all of them I've heard--now that I've heard this one, with the marvelous solemnity of mvt. 3--take its tempo too fast. The tempo here is perfect, combining evincing also sorrow, dignity, and reflectiveness.
builds to a climax after about 8 minutes then changes gears and builds to another climax after about 13 minutes and changes gears again and finishes with a long decrescendo and one last burst of hope.. brilliant and sad at the same time.
excellent recording - great dynamics - i have this requiem on an LP album by the St Louis orchestra conducted by Andre Previn. with Coplands the Red Pony on the other side. i always loved both songs.
I like everything in this performance except the saxophone - the player's vibrato is like an organ tremolo, yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh-yeh.....
Kinda nightclubby. Britten must have wanted a strange, visceral and strident voice but I can’t think of any other instrument that might have been able to match this odd solo.

Bellísimo obra, me recuerda a Mahler y Vauhham Williams, una orquestacion exquisita y un manejo temático excepcional

God bless- I love this music-
Le même esprit que la symphonie liturgique (n° 3) d'Honegger, chacun dans son style spécifique. Je vous invite à comparer !
Merci!

I love it
Britten was not fond of Stravinsky and Stravinsky was not fond of Britten.
Britten LOVED the latter's music until his dying day.
