On the topic of roughhousing with the dog and amping up the dog, i feel like with some dogs its completely fine to roughhouse and play tug of war and get them riled up. I feel as though you should ask the owner first before doing that. For my dog, he loves roughhousing, but still becomes a total sweetheart around people afterwards.
I wish I could put into words what makes this the best podcast because it certainly is hypnotic listening. My day brightens up no end when I see a new episode has been posted - and not merely due to Grey disapproving of Hitler's dog rearing skills! Classic!! Happy Christmas to bothof you and your respective families.
When I first started listening to Hello Internet, I had never heard of Brady Haran and had only watched one video that I only later found out was by him, "British Numbers Confuse Americans", which I had watched partially because CGP Grey was in it, but mostly out of outrage at the name, and I thought he was vaguely British, and possibly Indian or Iranian, from the last name. Until, in one of the early episodes, Brady talked about cricket for the first time. I instantly realised, this guy is totally Australian. Somehow, talking about cricket really brought out the Aussie in his voice.
I do like when you post these podcasts a little earlier on youtube. I feel slightly better listening here because i’m a RED subscriber. Also a Patron, so technically have ad block absolution I suppose.
When you say "don't anthropomorphize the animals" I think, "Yeah, don't anthropomorphize those stupid homo-sapiens, the robots are the only true humans." Maybe I've just been playing Talos Principle and listening to the computer in it too much.
So I was the kid that was the one who didn’t have a phone or social media or anything like that up until I turned 17 and could buy my own. I think it helped me with my social skills because I had to learn how to get ahold of my friends. I was never made fun of or the butt of jokes. Also I was home schooled and also talked to people by doing things such as theatre and track and field.
I disagree about keeping dogs off the leash if the dog has a tendency to bother humans. And the park is also a human park. I say this as a grumpy non-doggy owner
Same here. Dogs are like children, they're great if they're yours, but supremely annoying to everyone else. But then again I hold the position that no one in a city should own a pet... So maybe I'm a bit too extreme about it.
As a young person I got my first phone a year ago and I still don’t use social media ( by choice) and all I use is UA-cam. I prefer to meet people in real life , but I still am shy around new people, I find myself as an introvert but I think social media is bad for your personality. It’s just an opinion and it’s just the way I work, but even though i don’t socialize through social media I don’t feel like an outcast in school because in school people have to socialize in person which I am better at.
52:28 When I first started watching numberphile and listening to the podcast, I thought Brady was English (especially because lots of the people he talks to are), but now that they've pointed it out I'm noticing certain parts of his accent that are more Australian than British, but I think mostly his voice doesn't have the intensity that a lot of Australian people have where it's sometimes hard to even tell what they're saying even though they're speaking the same language. I think a similar thing happened with David Tenant's accent, because he's Scottish and has parts of the Scottish accent, but has incorporated parts of the English accent enough that he doesn't immediately sound Scottish to me.
Bloody Marys supposedly taste better on airplanes (while everything else tastes worse) due to the reduced pressure in the cabin and dry air, which both dulls our taste buds. Supposedly the engine noise makes everything less sweet as well. If you want to know more, I encourage a cheeky little Google search.
Anybody eels not seeing this in the podcast feed .(OUT OF DATE) I see it in my feed now this comment is out of date. was relevant on the day of this videos release for a few brief hours though.
I find the accent topic very interesting. I’ve been in America all my life yet people still occasionally will ask if I’m British. People disagree on whether or not I sound British, and I find it really odd. The idea that people just hear something different and mark it as foreign is definitely true. I have a habit of very precisely enunciating my words, and no dialect of English does that. One example is “water.” I pronounce the t, Americans pronounce the t as a d, and British people sometimes kind of skip over the t.
Hitler didn't want the Russians to capture and torture Blondi or put her on the display, at least according to Albert Speir. Also a nurse that was present at the time in the bunker said in 2005 that everyone was more upset at Blondi's death than at Hitler or Eva Braun's. Also I don't see how anyone could not immediately recognize Brady as Australian.
(Ignore this if you have pets, it won't make you happy) What I dislike about the concept of pets, is that humans tend have a completely twisted perception of their relationship to their own pet. A pet gives you the positive feeling of caring for some"one", a quirk of our psychology evolved to make us care for infants. Pets are a tool to exploit this part of our brain to give our consciousness excessive positive feedback for relatively insignificant tasks. A pet is there to serve an imagined loving relationship. The issue with all this is that we don't really care about the animal behind the pet. We don't really care whether we really provide a good live to the animal. We just do what is necessary for the pet to provide us with the feelings we desire. Absolute prime example for this are dogs. We have bred dogs to optimize for exactly that use, with disregard to all the issues this entails for the animal itself (If you want to just love your dog, don't look into this). And I understand that people don't care about animals, that's not the point. It's how sincere we believe in the lie we tell ourselves.
The stereotypical Australian accent is just Crocodile Hunter level to the rest of the world. English has strong representation of upper and lower class to the rest of the world, along with being muddied by Scottish or Irish accents, it's easier to mistake the general UK as the Origin if there are enough British inflictions, and the Australian sounds aren't as attached to the stereotypical heavy Hugh Jackman drawl.
So...I grew up when Facebook was a big deal. Hell, when I joined the Navy, it was mandatory to add the U.S. Navy as a friend on my Facebook while I was in the delayed entry program. Which was a problem, since I did not have one. I see no problem in serious limits on a kid's internet access, apps, and the tech they have access to. It seems like the argument of 'you have to let them because other parents let their kids' (an argument my Dad always laughed at) has taken over...but who cares? You really want your kid becoming friends with people who only like them for being the same? Also, I don't care where you live, there are plenty, plenty of people who can't afford to get their kids iPads and laptops and smartphones. Are we teaching kids it's okay to ostracize other kids for being poor? For having strict parents? Forget that. I'd rather my kid have *no* social skills than ones that are bad and harmful.
Technology in a child's life, inevitable and unavoidable, even if you're Amish. I've never had a kid, doubt I ever will, but I have had experience with children - siblings, cousins, and kids I babysat for free because lazy babysitter. And the best you can do is be there for them. They may think they won't need you, but they will always need you. And really the best you can teach is self-reliance as well as a yearning to be better than what they were before. Trying to block them? You're just delaying the inevitable, and ultimately you will lose that battle as children ALWAYS find a way. And yes, you have to raise them to be smart, but you have to encourage it to where they love it, otherwise they will ignore you and you'll get nowhere. With my brother, I encouraged spelling quizzes without teaching him how to spell it prior, it challenged him to think for himself, to figure it out, and the achievement of winning without help, especially for kids is powerful and they'll want more. You encourage more, but you don't force cause no one likes doing what they think they have to do - it becomes a chore that you hate doing, and as we all know, we don't do what we hate. Yes, you want them to have the best possible life, but your version of best possible life is not their version. It's an opinion to them, not a fact. You can't protect them from everything, you can only warn them and pray they listen, really listen. Parents are guides. You show how to navigate the waters and teach them what they can do if in trouble, and try to get them to come up with new ways to navigate it. But forcing them to ignore it will just ensure they drown.
Id say if i have a kid,i'll use the restraining app but if he or she can get around it i wont be mad Imo it show that you can get everything you want if you try hard enough
When I found out Brady was Australian then I hear him as an Australian. But he does have a... mid pacific accent? whatever the equivalent of the mid atlantic accent
For the tomato juice/bloody mary questions, I recommend this scishow video: ua-cam.com/video/9zp3kU5dpWE/v-deo.html Basically: tomato juice tastes better on planes.
Grey socializing? Brady comparing humans to metadata?
Oh how the roles have reversed.
Gleb Agamidae aye
how the turns have tabled...
Could have named this episode "Grey disagrees with Hitler"
If you think Grey is libertarian, you haven't watched enough of his videos.
"Two thumbs down to Hitler's dog raising skills."
-CGP Grey
The HypnoDrones have been released.
; )
That was a crazy ride
CGP Play How did I not know that you existed
On the topic of roughhousing with the dog and amping up the dog, i feel like with some dogs its completely fine to roughhouse and play tug of war and get them riled up. "She had immunity to accidental piercing damage"
Who Else tried to pause the video to get the two fidget spinners to crossover One another perfectly.
James Vanderslice Well no. But after seeing this I had to try.
James Vanderslice got it perfect the second time
2:30 is perfect.
Wow even the podcast didn't show up in podcast form.
No shownotes? =(
You can see them at the Hello Internet website. www.hellointernet.fm/podcast/94
Of course, the reason I started watching here is that their website crashes Firefox after its last update :/
Grey is absolutely going to get a dog after Mr Chompers leaves. It just can't not happen.
Lol no way, want to bet?
Do Not Go Into The Dog Park.
Asher Vandale No dogs are allowed in the dog park.
Nichole Ritchey people are not allowed in the dog park
mom's spaghetti.
you may see hooded figures in the dog park. DO NOT APPROACH THEM
Her name is Emma Blackery, not Emma Blackberry.
SPACKlick She always gets annoyed when people mistake her name, in a funny way.
I literally came to the UA-cam comment section to comment this
Rapidly blinking while watching the fidget spinners is more entrancing than I thought it’d be
"I think we all get more jowly as we age"
Grey talked about the subject
"Dog owners and their neglect"
A certain dog died
And his owner cried
Godwin's Law was in effect
great limerick
Brady: "We'll do a live show! Imagine that!"
Grey: "Hmm..."
Me: "lol"
THIS IS NOT STAR WARS
im thinking Christmas Day
That is my hope as well.
Yesssss. I'm a teenager and completely agree that social media is horrible for us.
This is true.
a video before it's on hellointernet.fm???
I was looking for it on overcast...nothing
j0nthegreat that's what I was thinking!
Me too, nothing on my podcast player too but video is up!!?
It's not on reddit either.
j0nthegreat the check list has fail
its always nice when one of these goes up. i click play, open up a game of choice, and just listen while doing the rounds in said game.
What a great holiday present! Thank you Brady and Grey.
Awwwww we want to see Mr Chompers!
I really wanted the spinners to slow to a stop at the end...
Her name is actually Emma Blackery.
15:34 Brady's laugh here. God that gets me giggling.
Alright, people. Let's get Audrey a brand deal. We can do this.
Interesting discussion on parental management of their children’s digital world. Definitely going to look into some expanded options...
wooo HypnoDrones released
Wait...one hour ago?
released early for patrons
I just discover this podcast and i relly love it
Mr chompers is the cutest name for a pupper :3
35:28 Wait, what? What was this? I don't ever remember Grey giving his audience a name in the past.
MyLittleDashie 7 what was the name?
... that's what I was asking, why are you asking me?
oof, do you remember what video that was in? And I can see why he wouldn't want to mention it again.
The people in the stadium were just giving Brady the respect he deserves.
I do like when you post these podcasts a little earlier on youtube. I feel slightly better listening here because i’m a RED subscriber. Also a Patron, so technically have ad block absolution I suppose.
I always thought of youtube rewind as an advert for youtubers that i would never recognize
Grey should take hotstoppers to a coffee shop in Dulles.
The 3rd Google Image result for "mighty black stump building" is a pic of Brady holding a newspaper in front of the building. LOL
When you say "don't anthropomorphize the animals" I think, "Yeah, don't anthropomorphize those stupid homo-sapiens, the robots are the only true humans."
Maybe I've just been playing Talos Principle and listening to the computer in it too much.
Anyone else playing Universal Paperclips while listening?
Fakjbf yep

This is exactly what I needed today, thanks!
just as a random thing not everyone in your discord is a patreon ;) thanks for the early watch though I love you guys
Pretty sure everyone in the live channel is a patron. (not a HI patron, but a CGP Grey patron)
nah I havnt had the opportunity to donate to him on anything I just saw live pop up randomly and I saw that he posted a video /shrug
that squares pace transition killed me
I did go subscribe to the animation and education channels from the rewind.
I disagree about keeping dogs off the leash if the dog has a tendency to bother humans. And the park is also a human park.
I say this as a grumpy non-doggy owner
Same. Laws are there for a reason.
Same here. Dogs are like children, they're great if they're yours, but supremely annoying to everyone else. But then again I hold the position that no one in a city should own a pet... So maybe I'm a bit too extreme about it.
Yeah, I personally don't trust other people's dogs and that they raised them properly.
As a young person I got my first phone a year ago and I still don’t use social media ( by choice) and all I use is UA-cam. I prefer to meet people in real life , but I still am shy around new people, I find myself as an introvert but I think social media is bad for your personality. 1:01:25 lol his "woah" was so priceless
when i look up mighty black stump" on google maps it takes me to the mighty black stump if that helps Brady
oh man... i've finally caught up to the latest podcast. a sad / happy / confusing day
"That's embarrassing, Adolf!"
52:28
When I first started watching numberphile and listening to the podcast, I thought Brady was English (especially because lots of the people he talks to are), but now that they've pointed it out I'm noticing certain parts of his accent that are more Australian than British, but I think mostly his voice doesn't have the intensity that a lot of Australian people have where it's sometimes hard to even tell what they're saying even though they're speaking the same language. Btw Grey, according to wikipedia, the hot towels are actually intended for you to clean your hands before or after a meal
Ayy, I don't wanna watch it yet because I need to space out my podcast from Cortex but.. Ima watch it anyway
I was hoping to see CGP Grey in youtube rewind then my hopes were crushed after this podcast 😔
8:05 timestamp I gotta say I just LOVE hearing Proud Dog Dad Grey talk about Mr. Chompers
Ya this years youtube rewind was nowhere as good as they used to be.
Thanks for the tip on BackBlaze
It's good to hear that fellow Tim's are taking it upon themselves to become Timformants
"watching timage unfold"
Anybody eels not seeing this in the podcast feed .(OUT OF DATE)
I see it in my feed now this comment is out of date. was relevant on the day of this videos release for a few brief hours though.
41:00 Oh good I was hoping he'd talk about the ashes
This video make me sad, because it means 2 more weeks without Hello Internet :(
I think youtube rewind should be a highlights reels or something. This thing it is atm is a mess.

wtf I've never recieved an offer for a hot towel on a plane in my life
I walk my dog alot and i've never had someone mention an instagram account

I think people say yes to doing this in order to say thanks to youtube for them being able to have this as a job or somethin
Can we have the picture of the Black Stump and the Telstra house?
The animation was the best part at the end and yet tragically they got nothing...
(Ignore this if you have pets, it won't make you happy)

if you do a live show, and its over in Adelaide, you should do stuff like teach grey to play cricket.
oh christ im addicted to universal paperclips
It drives me absolutely insane that I don't know what is going on in my dog's head.

When I found out Brady was Australian then I hear him as an Australian. But he does have a... mid pacific accent? whatever the equivalent of the mid atlantic accent
I was staring at the fidget spinners and didn't take in a word for about 10 minutes
For the tomato juice/bloody mary questions, I recommend this scishow video: ua-cam.com/video/9zp3kU5dpWE/v-deo.html

Grey HAS changed.
"Emma Blackberry"
Oh she is not gonna be happy about that :P
Grey is Mr. Chomper's nanny :D
1:09:39 i mean doesn't brady saying that out loud kinda give away the topic he was being so careful to avoid?
Uhh, where are the show notes?
