  • Professional vocalist sings through the last 1000 years of Finnish pop music!
What we now call traditional music or folk music in Finland used to be the pop music from when humans first started singing and playing instruments until like 100 years ago. But how did we get from 1000 to 3000 years old (we don’t know exactly) rune singing tradition to 2020’s most promising new artist Behm? Watch the video to see the evolution of Finnish pop (and fashion!) over 1000 years!

This is a good video. Those rascal girl type of songs were very popular ad we have many of them still. Often singing about very serious matters with lightness and ease, and vice versa-

She performed in the late Kaija Saariaho's opera, 'Innocence'. The opera was awarded with the Tait Award for Best New Opera Production at the 2024 Olivier Awards: "Aix-en-Provence Festival premieres Kaija Saariaho's opera, 'Innocence'", "The Royal Opera: Innocence trailer", "Innocence-traileri (Suomen kansallisooppera / Finnish National Opera)" and "Innocence: Moving Moment with Vilma Jää". Recently she has E.g. collected and documented traditional cattle calls from different parts of Finland.
Folk music is actually among the best Finnish music exports. One of the most popular groups is Värttinä. They have E.g. recorded for the Peter Gabriel's record company and were involved in the Lord of the Rings musical's production. Here's one song from them. There's a live performance available: "Värttinä - Kylä vuotti uutta kuuta". A more upbeat live performance from their early days: "Värttinä - Tupa täynnä tuppasuita".
One popular folk group is Loituma: "My Kantele (Eriskummainen kantele) - Loituma". If you're interested, here's discussion about Finnish folk music tradition and its possible influence on Finland's national composer Jean Sibelius: "Sibelius's Roots: An Interview with Pekka Kuusisto & Ilona Korhonen (Philharmonia Orchestra)". Sometimes folk song is performed in opera hall: "Pekka Kuusisto’s hilarious Proms encore - My Darling Is Beautiful". The Loituma's version of 'Ievan Polkka' started a UA-cam rabbit hole: "Loituma: Ievan Polkka (live 1996)". The versions out there are numerous and cover wide spectrum of genres: "Nightcore - Ievan Polkka (VSNS Remix)".
Also, the folk music tradition from Kaustinen municipality has been included on the UNESCO's List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: There's also an annual international folk music festival held there: "Kaustinen Folk Music Festival - 2018 teaser" and "Kaustislainen viulunsoitto - UNESCO-hakemusvideo / Kaustinen Fiddle Playing UNESCO nomination video".
Folk music influence can be heard in different genres. Couple of examples: "Vilperin Perikunta - Tervetuloa länteen, Andrej" and "KORPIKLAANI - Henkselipoika (OFFICIAL VIDEO)".
Couple of most popular Finnish A cappella groups: "Rajaton - Dobbin's Flowery Vale" and "Club For Five - Brothers In Arms".

"Too innocent for that song" 😂😂😂 You're maybe right, but it was a good performance anyways 😀
Here's a pro Finnish folk song band called "Värttinä" (Spindle) who use old Finnish language in their songs. J.R.R Tolkien formed an Elvish language based heavily on the old Finnish language in the "Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings"-trilogy - and you can surely hear it.
