Don't forget the contribution from John Kordic in the finals. Calgary thought they were going to manhandle the Habs in their series, and Kordic didn't let that happen.
Nilans Book brought Me here. A good read. I’m a 60 year old life long Bruins but I knew there would be a lot of Boston related things in his book. Again , a good read.
This brings back memories. Wow. I remember watching every game on my renred TV, From Granada TV if any one remembers. Young and couldn't afford much, and the playoff s are just about to start. Those were the days
I had the pleasure of seeing quite a few Hab's playoff games in the 1986 campaign, watching and following them on ESPN, but didn't get to see any from this Boston series. I watched on a $50 used 19" Admiral that I bought in the Recycler. The 86 Montreal Canadiens will always be one of my favorite teams!
If you're a Habs fan (which I am) how depressing is it to look at the present day team roster and look at the number of good, young players who were drafted and developed by Montreal. Compare that to this team who had Carbonneau, Chelios, Corson, Dalhin, Kurvers, C. Lemieux, Ludwig, McPhee, Richer, Roy, Skruland and Svoboda all 25 and under. This is the core of the team that was the class of the league in '89 with Calgary and had a 2-1 lead in the finals with game 4 in Montreal...and lost. And many of the same players are critical to the '93 cup. See Mr. Bergevin, that's what happens when you draft and develop your players properly instead of half assing it and then blaming the players when you mismanage them.
They were a factory, a veritable assembly line pumping our yearly quality two way talents. High IQ players who had skill, guts, smarts...and knew what to do in any situation on the ice. @@mukinmukin6352 You're absolutely right. All those teams needed was a top tier goaltender. That's why they drafted Tretiak. It's a shame they didn't get someone like Gilles Meloche, he might have been good enough to help them topple the Islanders that year.

VERY young Bill Ranford here...Bruins should been mpre patient with him ...also talk about Claude Lemieux taking one for the team ..great player very similar to Esa Tikkanen on the Oilers
Andy Moog acquired for Ranford gave the Habs quite a hard time. But they also had to give Geoff Courtnall in the trade which made it seem expensive looking back now so yes you are right.
I'd make that trade again. Moog was great in Boston. You have to go back to Frankie Brimsek to find a Bruin goalie who gave Montreal that bad of a time over that many years. Just the 1993 series alone, nevermind 1988 and 1990. Boston needed a veteran to stabilize the net, and Edmonton needed a young guy to back up Fuhr. It was a good trade for both teams.
The team was young but not that bad. On the other hand, the goaltending was horrendous. They had three goalies and still had to bring up a 19 year old rookie for the playoffs. Pete lost his vibe. And forget about the other two. Riggins and Keans must have been great dodge ball players in school. This is why everything turned around once Reggie and Andy made their heroic entrance.
Lemieux could have easily been given the Conn Smythe that year. I remember that playoff clearly, but it wasn't until we beat Hartford that the Cup was a real possibility.
Lemieux, Richer, Corson, Maley, Kordic, and Roy to name a few rookies on this amazing 1986 Cup team. Praying that our young guys like Harris, Barron, Masur, Slavkovsky, and other promising rookies will bring their skills for many years to bring us several Cups.
I cannot compehend how there are such abhorrent examples of sportsmanship in this sport (Bertuzzi vs Moore & McSorley vs. Breshear, for starters), but yet the players are forced to shake hands at the end of every playoff series. Talk about hypocritism at it's worst....

@@RandyDubin I don't think dirty players are celebrated. First, there's a difference between "dirty players" and "enforcers". Dirty players are guys like Claude Lemiuex and Darius Kasparitis - agitators who specialize in irritating opposing players to get them off their game, often breaking rules to do so. Those players are often considered "dirty" but they have never really been celebrated. Enforcers - Dave Brown, Bob Probert, etc. - are on the ice to fight - primarily to deter opposing players from harming his team's top players. They break the rules against fighting of course, but outside of that they don't do much other rulebreaking,so they're not considered "dirty". Those guys are celebrated by their fan base. But as fighting diminishes, the enforcer role is going extinct. Many teams don't have one now.
