Patrick Roy proved that he was the greatest goalie ever. Unbelievable saves throughout. Mike Liut was also incredible that year for Hartford.

That's right, these two teams played against each other again in 1989, with Calgary winning that time!
Absolutely incredible how the officiating has changed...the Carbonneau breakaway, first the guy takes a two handed slash at him and no call and then the defenseman who dove DID NOT get the puck first, so that was clearly a penalty and likely should have been a penalty shot. And when Mullen scores the final goal he is cross checked from behind and again, no call. lol. I respect the Calgary fans, what incredible class to applaud the Canadiens out of politeness and sportsmanship. Still a great city, don't get me wrong but wow, has it ever changed since 1986.

I was five when this happened, but in the early 90's my dad told me the refs don't really call penalties unless they interfere with a scoring chance. Now the league is full of cry babies, divers, and pussies. On the Carboneau play, he got the stick, and there was only one ref, but it is Kerry Frazier, and he hated the Canadiens.
That slash would probably be 5 in today’s game lol.

Yeah! What got in to him?? You'd think he would just throw it at the net as soon as the puck hit his stick lol. But to deke a guy and then score?? That was something special.
The league officials just walk out and basically hand over the cup, no drawn out speeches or nonsense. It was all so much simpler back then.
I miss something as simple as the camera angles.
Some of the slashes would kill a player now. Back then a player didn't budge.

Calgary had an incredible run but ran out of gas. Habs had a ton of heart and Roy

What a team they had Smith Naslund , Lemieux. The best checking line with Carbo Gainey and Nilan Then You had something that the Oilers never had. That Shut down defense led buy Larry Robinson. Who woulda ever thought that Rick Green would score the winning goal. And then the Greatest Goalie ever ! Then the parade ! That was something else . Players and coaches dedicated chapters in their autobiographies about that wonderful day in May of '86 . What memories

John Davidson is so bad! "Montreal's Canadiens, Calgary's Flames...and on and on..." It is funny to hear Don Chery talk so much at the end about what it's like to win a cup.
Yes I noticed that too... Davidson was always a great broadcaster for HNIC but that line sucks lol
I always felt he resented the former Soviet players that began flooding in during the early 90's
I remember how biased he was during the 1990 Goodwill Games.
That was one of their strongest teams, even after Fedorov's defection.
This was the last time 2 Canadian teams playing for the cup. 33 years. What r we doing wrong?

@@marklegault6662 That is the truth. Bettman came in halfway through the 1992-93 season. Montreal won. When he awarded the Stanley Cup to the Habs at the Forum, you can literally see and hear the disdain on his face and in his voice. I can still see him twitching as he said the words "...For a 24th time." almost 30 years later and still no Canadian Cup winner. The odds of that happening organically are next to nil.
2:56 at center ice no slashing call then right after no penalty shot or even 2 minutes minor called.. but the analysts don't seem to care about it either.. was this normal back then in 86? Were the penalty shots rules different?
Stick work was generally tolerated...medium slashes and hookings...player was supposed to fight through it!
...the guy who got slashed was Guy Carbonneau...and HE was 1 of the worst/best at stick checking his opponents...
...that was a big part of his defensive game...and why he is in the Hall of Fame in spite of never scoring more than 26 goals!!

Hockey today is way softer. They give goals to these guys and teams. An example is Guy's "breakaway." Let's say he is on the capitals today. Well, the first penalty would be Baxter wacking at his ankles and the second penalty would have been the take down so he can't score. Then, using today's standard, Ovechkin and others hop over the boards with a power play, maybe a two man advantage. Tell me that's not giving guys goals. And this would happen many, many times per game. You saw that "Ole" by Joe Mullin, well each team has 9 Joe Mullins as forwards and at least 3 defensemen.
Scoring is extremely easy today , but no one wants to admit it. Todays game, and the so called overtime and "shootout" is a "skills" competition, not hockey. It's like the guy that can dunk but not play basketball well or run extremely fast but is not a great wide receiver, these are "skills" things not the player.
Let the game get a little choppy and get rid of the skilled lacrosse player on skates and get down to some tough pulling at times hockey.

If goalies back in the 1980s were so bad, how is it that Patrick Roy and Grant Fhur are a product of the 1980s. And how is it that Gretzky scored many times on Roy if Gretzky only scored alot because 80s goalies were bad?
Not so much of bad goalies but just compare a picture of Roy in his gear in 86 vs say 99 the reason the 80’s has so many goals will become apparent pretty quick
I would like to see today's goalies play with 1970s/80s equipment. Now you can barely see the net when they are in the crease.
@@my3dviews maybe not exactly the same equipment (that stuff did not offer good protection and was propably quite heavy) but smaller equipement would be nice and maybe increase scoring again.
@@nessu1385 Being heavy is part of what made it more difficult. The goal pads gave good enough protection, but weren't as wide as the ones today.
The masks and some of the other equipment wasn't as good for protection as the new equipment. But a lot of what goalies use today has nothing to do with protecting them and has everything to do with making themselves bigger in order to make it easier to stop the puck. The catching glove is a good example of that. It is way bigger than before, not just because it has more padding.
Of course the players also have better sticks that allow for harder shots, so you wouldn't want to face a slap shot with a carbon fiber stick with 1970s goal equipment.
@@my3dviews the Thing about protection was more about the chest protector (they were not offering great protection, No Wonder they prefered to Stand Up und let the Pads take most of the beating). The Pads size was okay for sure. Weight would ad extra difficuly (slow the goalie down) but I think lighter Equipment (Pads, sticks) are a normal Progression (gigantic Pads not) and fit Into the faster Game of today.
The Flames would have won 10 Stanley cups if it wasnt for the Oilers of the 1980s.
'88 was the 1 stung for the Flames because they were favored in that series against the Oil & had the home ice advantage!!
