      Nerdarchy just seen this video. I did this build as a half-orc before. GM very picky about stuff like this without a good backstory. Backstory was a tribe warrior who’s tribe got over run and he was found half dead and was saved by some monks who took him in and trained him to control his rage. His god of course being the orcs deity.

      you should look up a guy called ranton, he trained with the shaolin monks, and it turns out that most of that peace and tranquility stuff were for tourists and donation money, they are warriors first and foremost, and train their asses off to be the best they can be at kicking someone's ass.

    Its a case of ying and yang. The monk presumes to be a balanced character, yet he is always peaceful, calm, and in-control. That's not balance - its one-sided. To truly understand the coldness and serenity of ice, one must understand the passion and fury of fire. Embrace the rage, it too is natural.

    A badly injured 9th Level Barbarian is found by Monks from a secluded monastery. He learns to channel his Rage into Ki as he is nursed backed to health. The Barbarian begins taking the first steps of learning "The Raging Fist of the Stormlands."

I think you can take it more in terms of the PC or his master perhaps studied hurricanes and tempest, and was awed by the power and their nature of swirling rage and chaos with a center of inner peace and tranquility, the Eye of the Storm. And that true power comes from the point between Rage and Serenity. Perhaps he/she was a pirate or sailor who survived a such a storm and became a survivor on some deserted island where he became a hermit who trained in this way and is now making his way back into society. I don't know, just adding my 2 cents.

    My personal build is Monk (Open Hand) 6 and Barbarian (Path of the Zealot) 14. That 1d6+7 Radiant damage on top of 1d6+8 for the first attack (that hits) is spicy as hell, and I think it's one of the few Monk/Barb builds that actually fits thematically. You're from a monestary to a war/strength god. No real need for any twisted reason to follow both paths; it's technically within your tenets to follow such a path.

    Maybe the backstory that makes logical sense if you want to go monk first, is the monastery where the character studied, studied a particular form of martial arts that reflected a particular animal spirit (like various classical Chinese Kung-Fu styles).
    For example, a grappling style with hand strikes for bear, a mobility based style with rapid striking, and flying kicks for eagle, and a mobile, flanking style based low kicking and strikes designed to try and knock your opponent prone before finishing them off for wolf.
    A tragedy happens at the monastery which drives the character to grief, but this unlocks a spiritual connection to the totem of his style, fuelled by his grief and rage at the tragedy at the monastery.
    His first 2 levels levels of barbarian are when his rage takes him over, and he is learning to control it, that way when you choose your path at 3rd level as Path of the Totem, you can thematically link your training as a monk to your totem as a barbarian, and as you level up as a barbarian, I see the character learning to channel his rage through his previous martial arts training. What do you guys think?

    If you use a shield, you lose the benefit of the monk damage die as well as the extra attack using your bonus action. I might also suggest the Water Genasi. You don't get bonus to Str, but the bonus to Con helps def and the Wis boost will help with your Monk class features. Plus you have a 30 swim speed, and the boost to movement from both barbarian and monk say nothing about it being land speed only. :)

      Chops I agree. After watching this video i did some theorycrafting on this build. Lizardfolk do indeed give this build the best racial features. The 1d6 bite as an unarmed attack (which counts for the monk's martial arts), the lizard folk Unarmored Defense gives you an AC of 15 at level 1 (compared to 12 or 13 using the Monk or Barb feature), added swim speed, hungry jaws, and skill proficiencies. not to mention 15 minutes of holding breath (basically immunity to gas spells and effects, suffocation, and drowning) and Crafty Artisan flavor feature.

    I've been running this build for about 6 months now on a half-orc. It is super powerful and works very well. For the most part, I don't worry much about Dex or Wisdom because you could still use Strength for unarmed, even as a monk. I feel to note the fluidity in mechanics is so good: reckless + bonus action attacks, Danger Sense + Evasion, Resistances + Deflect missiles, ect. However, I am building just a bit differently than your version here. I keep the d6 unarmed and go 9 monk and 11 Barbarian, for the Relentless feature. Flavorfully, I feel it better suits the brawler build this is going for and when stacked with the half-orc racial feature it becomes highly difficult to fell this character. High AC, Resistances, lots of hp, advantage on Dex saves that you only take half damage if you fail somehow, crazy mobility, and high damage output. This has become my favorite way to play and all straight from the PHB. Subclasses I go with: Totem of the Bear and Way of the Open Palm.

    Hmm, random thought. Would you allow a shield to be claimed as a monk weapon, as essentially an extension of your punching? If so, a shield could actually be your main weapon and you could go for a serious Captain America styled fighter running around with the high con, dex, and str, and only decent mental stats, doing shield bashes and throws and then relying on punches and kicks until you recover your shield.

He’s being watched by an abyssal harvester that took his fellow monks and before his grand master was taken he was given the scroll of the long death, to help him destroy this thing. Later on he met a hermit that taught him how to channel the totem of the orca (bear) in an attempt to quell his anger over his lost comrades. He’s a decent tank/h2h combatant that is difficult to kill lol. Lvl 15

  • @MrGimmick77
    @MrGimmick77 7 років тому +5

    I like having a first level barbarian, for AC with con instead of wis, and the resistance while raging. From there go monk. Your ability priorities from most to least will be strength > con > dex > and then set up your mental stats how ever you want. You're essentially just playing a monk, who can afford to dump wisdom for another physical stat. The race I'd pick would probably be Goliath with the new UE brawny feat for double prof in athletics, and a x4 normal lifting capacity. After you're monk levels make your fists hit with a d6, you can dip back two more levels in barbarian for bear totem, for x6 lifting capacity. Then if you want to pick up tavern brawler for improvised weapon prof, you can use giant stuff like carts and wagons to beat people like the incredible hulk. You're also monstrous at wrestling, with the ability to grapple on your action, and knock people prone with your open hand flurry of blows, making them grappled and prone, with a possible 30+ grapple check to break, before they can even attempt to get up.

    • @curtismorin6396
      @curtismorin6396 7 років тому +1

      Goliath powerful build doesn't stack with Brawny feat because the exact same ability doesn't stack with itself, sorry.

    • @MrGimmick77
      @MrGimmick77 7 років тому

      Damn, I thought Brawny was worded differently. That's fine though, there's nothing wrong with an ability score improvement.

    • @skooshtastic
      @skooshtastic 7 років тому +1

      They stack because they aren't the exact same ability. If they had the same name it would be different, but they only have the same text. Like if a monk was also a war cleric then they would be able to get 3 attacks using the war cleric's war priest ability and monk's extra attack.

    • @MrGimmick77
      @MrGimmick77 7 років тому

      Curtis is right. The devil is in the details. For a Goliath, the wording is that for lifting capacity, you're considered a size category larger, and the same goes for the feat. They don't actually add a modifier, they just change the formula, but they both change it in exactly the same way.

    • @skooshtastic
      @skooshtastic 7 років тому +1

      I see what you're saying, but I still would run it as counting as one size larger twice. If you count as one size larger as a Goliath, then as far as I'm concerned you normally count as large for carrying capacity. If you then take brawny, your normal is more than other characters' normal, so one size larger for you is huge. I think that's how it reads, and that's how I would apply it if it came up in my game.

  • @gatonegroloco

    I actually made a barbarian monk but it was more for story reasons. The character was a Minotaur that wandered from his labyrinth and was reformed by a traveling high monk who brought him back to his monastery. As far as the rage tranquility thing, the martial arts are built into muscle memory meaning he'd be able to use them (though less effectively) while raging. As for the Ki aspect, Ki can come from emotions so him raging but channeling that into his fist as a sort of silent berserker would work narrative wise as well.

    I just had a player in campaign go with a monk / kensai dip into barbarian. Her model was the Bride from Kill Bill with a focus on hunting down cultists. Special nod to Nerdarchy - I was inspired by the gnome monk chain build that Nerdarchy did a feature on and developed a similar idea within the campaign world. She was inspired by that idea of cult hunting monks and began her monk build and off it went.

    Totem Warrior Barbarian: 14 Levels: Bear, Bear, Tiger for options.
    Drunken Master Monk: 6 Levels
    Feats: Tavern Brawler, Fighting Initiate(Unarmed Fighintg Style), Maybe depending on stats, Slasher.
    110ft Max movement by level 7, can grapple as a bonus action, lift and throw enemies, 2 ways to disengage from combat, loads of defensive features, can impose advantage for party members like a beast.
    Basically King from Tekken with amazing speed. Just add nifty magic belt.

    I imagine the Half-Orc might have struggled with the rage inherent to their heritage, and so retreated from society in order to get a handle on it. Just get out, so they couldn't hurt anyone, and where they wouldn't have the stress of civilization setting them off all the time. And over the course of solitary contemplation, they studied the natural world, forming a martial art that channeled their rage in a focused, controlled manner.

    Four ability scores? No. *Two* ability scores: CON and DEX.
    *Level 1 to 3: Barbarian* - get the barbarian unarmored defense, get rages for resistance to piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning. For those levels, use a finesse weapon and learn to live without your rage damage bonus. Having a single ability that adds to both your damage and AC (DEX) makes up for that. At level 3, take Path of the Totem Warrior and go with Bear for resistance to everything but psychic damage.
    *Level 4+: Monk* - one stills get the barbarian unarmored defense, so there is no need to sweat the WIS score, *and* one also has a great CON score for all the lovely HP, which a d8 combat squishy like the Monk needs, *and* one still has the benefits of *rage* with respects to damage resistance. As one's DEX is already high if not maxed, one gets one's full AC bonus, *and* the to-hit *and* damage bonuses for one's Martial Arts.
    Nearing the endgame, one will still be able to get one's top Monastic Feature at level 17. Because one only has two abilities to max out, missing out on the level 19 ability improvement/feat isn't really an issue - one can still has lots of improvement chances to max CON and DEX and still get all the feats one could realistically need. And considering all the resources available from magic potions, magic items, and spell-casting party members by that level, missing out on the level 18 and level 20 Monk features of Empty Body and Perfect Self are no big loss.
    *SO,* seeing as how one doesn't need STR for a to-hit or damage bonus or WIS for an unarmored defense bonus, the best race for this build is obvious: Stout Halfling. Here's where these little fuckers come in to their own. One gets +2 DEX and +1 CON which is exactly what one needs for this build. The *advantage vs. poison* and *resistance to poison* are fantastic. *Halfling Nimbleness* more than makes up for the 5ft less movement on a crowded battlefield. The *Lucky* feature means one will almost never make a crit fail (it essentially amounts to an advantage roll 5% of the time). *Bravery,* an advantage against being frightened is a solid, albeit situational defense.
    BTW, this is not entirely theoretical - I am currently using this model in an _Out of the Abyss_ adventure. The DM is leveling us by achievements, and right now the characters are level 9. I'm a Bear Totem Warrior and Way of the Kensei. So far so good.

    I've loved the idea that the monks tranquil mind/spirit can easily fit with Barbarian rage in that it's less of frothing fury, and more a channeling of the eb and flow of their emotions. Instead of releasing the fury, anger, and passion like an explosion, the monkbarian let's it flow through them, and and controls their anger, releasing it in their strikes, or leaps, or in preparing to take damage. They take control of their passion, rather than letting the passion take control of them. And to the outside, it looks like a savage trance, and a brutal flowing of movement.

    Gorulf Ironhand, Exiled Chieftain of the Daggertooth Clan
    Gorulf was a powerful and prolific war chief of his clan in his day. As he grew in age, so did his desire for wisdom and understanding of the world that he and his people inhabit. Not many chieftains had ever reached such an age, when 40 human years was the average lifespan for a raiding Orc. As is the way of his people, once a chief passes into the Wild Dark (dies), a new chief is chosen by blood combat. As his age and length of rule was unprecedented, many of the Hot Bloods wished to rule and conquer by their names.
    Two brothers, Kravek and Doloth, sought power through devious magical methods. Kravek's and Doloth's dark magics engulfed Gorulf after a savage battle, and dragged him farther than anywhere he, his father, and his father's father had conquered. Thought to be dead, Gorulf has spent many moons meditating and contemplating his direction, through the aid of the Hunting Moon (his deity).
    Hunting Moon has only begun to teach him the true meanings of calm air, the still night, and the savagery of the Stalkers (night predators).
    Half-Orc Totem Warrior Barb/Shadow Monk.
    Stealthy, quick, hard as nails melee fighter that his like a Mack truck when it counts!

  • @TheAnon03

    The hard thing is to decide between how to allocate lvl's between the two classes, 14M for prof on ALL saves (and immune to all poison and disease) or 11B for Relentless rage (eg. Hard to actually die while raging).
    If you really want to add some damage then work at least one lvl of Hexblade into there for prof bonus to melee damage rolls and crit on 19+ (with 4 attacks/turn) + 1d6 necro damage per hit from basic Hex when not raging.
    Totem of the Bear for Barb is a given, the harder question is what to take for Monk I'm leaning towards Kensei (XGE) but Astral Self (UA) might work.

    What's the level progression? It's great to make a 20 level build, but if you play it, you need to have a plan. You need monk 1 early to weaponize your bonus action. You need barbarian 1-3 for defenses. And monk 5 or barbarian 5 for extra attack as soon as possible. Monk 1, Barb 5, monk 2-4, that gets you to level 10. Back to Barb, then finish in monk? Tbh, I never play that high level. My highest level character was 13.

    So, here is how I built the same concept: Tabaxi, monk 17, barb 3, taking long death and wolf totem. I had a bit of an advantage with stats because we roll at my table, and reroll anything less than 13, so i generally have pretty high stats all around. Now this is an insanely crazy build because of the tabaxi ability to double speed, meaning that the max speed without feats is 120 every other turn. With the special abilities that come with the death class, you could zip around the battlefield to all sides and end your turn by almost guaranteeing a kill on an enemy at the cost of a few ki points, and be out of everyone else's range. Pair that up with rage and the other barbarian stuff and damn.

  • @TheLastSoundNL

    Have a barbarian but their anger and rage are uncontrollable and becomes an issue to their friends, they almost killed one of them. They take monk classes to control their rage and anger. They don't always manage to succeed, but they try.
    There you go, easy fluff for barbarian monk. The opposing nature of the classes can work in your favour, rather than against you. Works extra well with animalistic races to control their aggressive instincts.
    I don't think it's that uncommon of a trope either.

    In our current game I'm playing a mountain dwarf 6 barbarian (bear both aspects), and 3 monk (open hand). the build is 14 monk and 6 barbarian, and the rage comes from the alcohol he makes so the bear bonus at lvl 3 come from him being drunk, the idea is making a drunken master that when drinking goes into a rage. The background is the entertainer, gladiator slave option, the point buy for stats wasn't too bad (14, 14, 14, 13, 9, 8) post racial being (16 STR, 14 DEX, 16 CON, 9 INT, 13 WIS, 8 CHA) our DM allowed us to pick 1 rare item, I immediately grabbed a belt of Giant Strength for a STR of 21. hes been a blast to play and the mobile feat is almost necessary, pushing a creature using Flurry 15ft from a failed STR save is very satisfying. His main weapon is currently a quarterstaff. The only thing I'm thinking about asking my DM for is if the other masonic traditions can be from the Drunken master once Xanathar's Guide finally comes out since we only use "official material".

    Interesting. I've been dealing with this idea for a few days now as I'd like to replicate Dragon Warrior from Battle Realms - kinda half-naked guy with a giant curvy sword that can be set on fire and they also have Chi shield that absorbs damage. As this would be a totally flavour-based character, I've decided to give him Counterattack (homebrew) due to the lack of armor. Counterattack: you can use your reaction to punch a counterattack (both armed and unarmed attacks) to block the incoming blow. Roll a full attack and if a number you roll is higher than the opponent's, the attack is deflected. Any thoughts?

So far the best I've come up with is elderich knight at 7th lvl using alter self to make there fists as hards as iron.
