Glacier National Park Backpacking - North Fork / Goat Haunt - July 2014

  • A video of my son Christian and I backpacking in the spectacular far northern North Fork / Goat Haunt region of Glacier National Park. We did a 50 mile, 5-day out-and-back trip starting at Bowman Lake, over Brown Pass, Lake Francis, Goat Haunt, Kootenai Lake, and then returned over the same route.
Like my 2013 video showing our trip on the 'Great Northern Loop' this is a long, hour+ video with a slideshow with pictures of the trip over the last 10 minutes. For those interested in all aspects of Glacier backpacking, including the Backcountry Permit Office experience, the video will probably be of more interest. If you just want a shorter taste of Glacier and our trip I think you'll enjoy the many HDR pictures at the end.
This is a repost of my original video from August 2014. To make a long story short, I battled copyright issues from the start with my original video due to my use of 3 John Denver songs for the slideshow. UA-cam restored my video multiple times, and I think I had 'won' the battle, but in the end I came to the conclusion that the John Denver copyright owners had the right to choose whether I used John's music or not, so I re-edited the video to include only Creative Commons, royalty-free music.

Wonderful. Great dad. Reminds me of backpacking with my son several times at Mt. Rainier. He died after a battle with cancer. Cherish these times with your son. You never know what can happen.

I wanna thank you for posting the videos of both of your trips. I was looking to find a good route to go in late June, with less snow and found this video and I decided to give it a shot. I just got back from doing the same route over 6 days, 6/23 to 6/28. It was beautiful! I can't thank you enough for your wonderfully detailed videos and gorgeous pictures that helped inspire me to give it a go myself. Keep em coming!

Andrew Kay You're very welcome and I'm glad you were able to do the same trip so early in the season. I'm envious! I did hear it was a 'low snow' year in the Glacier area, so it sounds like that might have worked to your advantage this year. My only regret from our trip is that we weren't able to get into the Hole-in-Wall/Boulder Pass area due to deep snow and dangerous trails in that area, but then it gives us one more reason to go back. I'm currently in final preparations for a quick weekend+ trip to the Four Pass Trail near Aspen, CO this upcoming weekend - video coming soon after. Congratulations on your Glacier trip!

Thanks for the memories. I traveled a very similar route with Glacier Guides in August. Took the boat down to Goat Haunt, crossed the same river on the Boulder trail and camped next to the river the first night and then on to Lake Francis/Hawksville campsite the second night and then to Bowman HD campsite on the third night and exited the next day at the end of Bowman Lake. On the way back to West Glacier we stopped at the Polebridge Mercantile store.
A very spectacular hike only we did not have a skeeter problem. Started out on August 8th. Thanks again for the video.

You're very welcome, and I've probably watched that video myself about 20 times (typically in the winter when I need a little Glacier emotional 'lift'). That was a great trip, and the cool thing was I got to re-live some of that hike when I got back to Glacier in 2018. I'm hoping for another Glacier permit in 2021, and maybe I'll be getting back to the North Fork/Goat Haunt area again soon.

@@davidgrayin My buddies and I were fortunate enough to do a 5 night North Circle route trip in 2019. I was able to snag a few nights on the Teton Crest Trail this Summer, which should be a fantastic trip. I'm very much looking forward to filming that area. I hope you have some great trips planned, and I look forward to the videos!

All I can say is 'go for it'. They grow up way too fast, and before you know it you're on the 'outside' looking in, in terms of your kid's lives. My advice would be take advantage of every moment you can that they want to be with you, and in my opinion the moments in the woods are more impactful than most. If there is anything I can do to help in terms of information or advice just let me know.

awesome great job showing off the area, exact same trip i did up there except stayed at lk janet coming in & spectacular francis on way out! Like many bckpacks attempted up there I ended up with a different amazing trip than planned as upper kintla to brown pass was closed due to a carcass three grizzlys were consuming. Guess that will be for next time! Actually ran into the three brothers who I believe were the last through before it closed at head of bowman on their last day; Having a pretty scary recall of hearing growling from far off, not knowing what or where it came from before looking over a ravine & seeing the sight! Not looking up from their meal, hair raised & warnings issued
