I grew up with both Cream of Wheat AND oatmeal. Still love both.
😋
Me too
My grandma always made this for me. But I loved the clumps lol
I make mine with milk, some butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a few pimento seeds for flavor. It’s banging! And when I’m having some the next day, I put some in a bowl and add a quarter cup of vanilla almond milk to make it loose and heat it in the microwave. 🤤 😋
That milk to loosen it up is key! Lol
@@DanielleLaShawn absolutely
Add a few dashes of pure vanilla extract and it'll change your life!!! I promise you this!!!
Thank you
Yes!!
Make it with milk instead of water
Add some pancake syrup
Pb ftw 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Oh man this was my favorite when I was little! I still love it to this day. I like it thick with butter, milk and sugar. So so good. Reminds me of eating breakfast with my grandparents. Nothing tasted better than dipping your toast in it. Takes me back home.
I absolutely love Cream of Wheat even today and I am real grown. It reminds me of childhood. I love the story you told in the beginning of the video about your memories of this dish, so nostalgic. Thanks for the video and the memories.
Me too! Thank you!
Same!!!
I actually just ordered some cream of wheat with my groceries!
Mmmm....
Can't wait to make some for my daughter, to see what she thinks. I haven't made it in forever!
I grew up eating oatmeal my grandma always made it but I have no preference between cream of wheat or oatmeal
@@DanielleLaShawn I love your pots they look so nice
Been on some tough times food wise during this pandemic. I dug through my pantry and found a couple boxes of cream of wheat. Better believe I made up a big batch for me and my girlfriend. She was skeptical until she had a bite. Now she realizes us southerners were onto something, haha.
Sorry to hear that, but I am glad you guys enjoyed it. It's definitely a delicious and filling meal.
In my family, my grandma would fix this in the winter; we love it. Yes, it’s definitely my childhood we never ate oatmeal.
Right! I don't think I had oatmeal until I was a teenager. Lol or at least I don't remember it.
I hope my childs mother will be as proud of her role in the family as you are. God bless you 💯
A warm mug of Cream of Weat, cinnamon toast and Saturday morning cartoons and then an afternoon playing in the tree house. Mom always made a big batch for the neighborhood kids. Good memories.
As a kid, I absolutely HATED this stuff. But it's been about 25 years since I tried it, so I grabbed a box at the store yesterday.
Been watching videos on how to properly mix it and season it, hoping I get it right.
Idk if I'll like it more now than I did as a kid, but it never hurts to revisit old things
Do you like it now?
I had it for the first time as an adult and love it. Specifically the Cinnabon flavor
It's so good. Lol
I haven’t had a good bowl of this since my Grandma was alive. I’m gonna try your recipe & hopefully I get that taste I’m looking for. ❤️
Yes! For me it was my great aunt but I found out that she used sweetened condensed milk in hers so if u can't get the right taste try that. I like mine with just sugar, butter and milk though.
Love cream of wheat, i could drink it for breakfast lunch and dinner. But i keep it simple, salt and condense milk. No sugar or butter. But its a preference thing.
The condensed milk would make it both sweet and creamy and probably add a bit of buttery-ness too. I can see why u use it.
@@DanielleLaShawn you gone be a good lady and cook that for me one day lol
I remember my grandma making this in the morning
Grandmas are the best. Lol
My grandma is making it right now LOL
I Love This Stuff. Not Just How Delicious CoW is, But the Memories of My Grandmother Making This for Us for Breakfast on a Cold Morning. Such a Simple Video, but You Bring Back the Memories for All of Us Who Enjoyed This as Kids !!
I add coconut milk, can milk, negrita vanilla. Butter. I use that fair life milk it's so creamy. Comes out so good
Sounds so good!
I’m from the Caribbean we love porridges. We eat oats, cream of wheat and cornmeal pop (porridge) we use milk, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and essence tho!!!’ Delicious
Sounds delicious! Everything y'all make is good. Lol
My mom used to make it for us cold winter. I just made it for my kids first time. I added pancake syrup with cinnamon.
I love Cream of Wheat my grandma made it for me and my brothers and cousins and she put sugar butter and can milk in it and it so good
Your advice worked for me mam I am only 12 thank u for your advice😃
Lol, glad it worked for you!
Can u use butter
Minus the sugar and butter, this is great for weight-loss . The way its made on thus video would be how I would eat it on cheat day . I usually just add berries and banana on other days with one of those small half/half you put in coffee.
I agree. On it's own it's a very low calorie food, it's the additions that have the potential to make it a calorie buster. 😩😩
Love mine with brown sugar and cinnamon. Swerve has a good brown sugar substitute for those who can’t have sugar.
Great to know! Thank you
The way I make it, I add sweetened condensed milk, and heavy whipping cream, with some vanilla and super tiny amount of cinnamon and it makes an amazing pudding like cream of wheat. Depending what brand I buy will depend if I need to add salt to it. I have found some brands make it saltier than others.
That sounds amazing!
Omg childhood memories!!! I totally forgot about cream of wheat. What a great idea to make ahead and store in the fridge :)
Definitely a breakfast life saver to prep it ahead.
Instead of using salt and water, I use milk and sugar. Its delicious. I make it for my kid almost every day, and she loves having lumps in hers!!!
Sounds so good!
@@DanielleLaShawn , I see your recipe also deviates from how the box tells you to make it, because they only use salt, and I can't remember if they only tell you to use water. The main difference is that I just use milk. It looks awesome!☺
My son loves it with lumps too! Lol 😂So when I screw it up, to my kids it tastes even better 🙌
@@lastochka100 isn't that weird! 😄
Yes!!! Salt...and I use brown sugar..with honey..so good. 👊
😋 not gonna lie, that sounds like a vibe.
This Cream Of Wheat has the consistency that is perfect for me.
I love cream of wheat along with cream of rice. It looks so good! Thank you for the post.❤
Same! ☺️
You taking me way back. I grew up on cream of wheat and I still eat it.😋
I swear I can't remember having oatmeal until I was a teenager. Lol
@@DanielleLaShawn SAME lol
My grandfather used to eat that stuff alot he loved it
I’m sad they took off the smiling black chef on the box , it always made me happy seeing his warm smile on a cold morning while I wait for my water to boil, same with aunt jemima and uncle ben
Lol
Not sure why I love cream of wheat but I’m thinking it’s the consistency. Plus the good stuff added is literally bonus
My problem is I really don’t enjoy cooking. And really don’t like cooking if I’m not sure about the outcome. And the more time I invest the more I get squirrely about making something that may fall into the wrong category. If I’m having a good day I can talk my better half into doing it cuz she’s good at cooking
Nice technique. We have something like this in India which is savory with cashew nuts mustard seeds curry leaves and ginger called Upma. Your version with a couple of sausage links and coffee would be my perfect American breakfast.
It's so interesting how different cultures do things differently. Would love to try your version.
I actually love lumps in mine's
I don't mind them sometimes but I def prefer it smooth.
Lol same!!
Yup,i grew up on this. I don't like it anymore but my babies love it and they eat it almost every weekend. Throw some sausage or bacon in the oven, add some toast and fruit on the side😋😋😋😋chile, those children will be full until dinner time.
Great video sis🖤💜🧡💜🖤
Yep, it does a great job of keeping you full, especially when you add some sides like you suggested. My kids LOVE IT! Lol
After I make my cream of wheat with half milk half water, I put in some butter, cinnamon and sometimes cardamom, a spoonful of brown sugar, and just a drizzle of maple syrup. Oh Snap! Now I am hungry for it!
Yummmmm
Please send me a bowl! 😍 I just bought a box. 👍🏽 Curry also used sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk. 😋
I like to make mine without those because I don't always have them on hand.
Thank you for this, didn't want my child to eat oats. This is definitely an alternative ✊❤
You're welcome!
I love cream of wheat way better than grits 😋 😩
Lol I just started eating grits and like them and now I want to try Cream of Wheat too.
My grandmother made me cream of wheat growing up. There was always lumps and funny enough I really like the lumps.
I sometimes do too. Lol
Probably could avoid the lumps by pouring COW into cold water and then bringing it to a boil. 🤔
I remember eating this when I was a little tot, I loved it so much and my sisters hated it which surprised me cause I couldn’t get enough of it. I probably went a good 20 years without eating it and when I cooked a bowl of it I almost puked. I forget the exact taste but whatever it was I was shocked at how different it tasted compared to my memory of it. Maybe it’s just my tastebuds changed or I screwed up the cooking of it. I sure wish it tasted like I remembered because dam I loved it. 😥
Awww man. Did you try it again or give up on it? Lol
@@DanielleLaShawn I tried it again last week and it was closer to what I remember. This video helped explain my previous error which was the amount of sugar I put in, which was the level I usually put in my oatmeal. So significantly way less than what I should have used thus the horrible experience.
My last attempt after watching this video was still shy of my childhood memories but closer than before. I guess I’ll need to find a way to measure how much sugar is required per cup of cream of wheat. I am determined to relive my childhood memories no matter how many teeth need to be sacrificed to do so.
@@richvail7551 she said something about sweetened condensed milk in a comment above. Maybe try that?!
Why does the title say from scratch, when you are using some kind of store bought pre-made mix?
Because it is not instant. The only way to be more from scratch than this is to harvest and grind the wheat before cooking it. Someone left a link to a video that'll show you how to do that in the comments if you're interested.
So I do 1/4 about 4 tablespoons wheat + 2 cup water/milk. If I’m making a lot then I will do this. But I have pretty severe OCD so I really have to fight not to measure because I know exactly how much fills me up 1/4 cup. So I don’t like being surprised on how much I will end up with.
You can do what works for you.
Add a great big stick Cinnamon before adding the CoW, Vanilla extract, Pet Milk, & brown sugar. 💗
With some buttered toast on the side yum!!!
Lol you made that sound soooo good. 😋
@@DanielleLaShawnwithout digging too deep into actual origin of the recipe. Its Mexican/Spanish Style CoW the way my Great Grandma, Grandma & Mama made it. Its the best.
The Cinnamon stick makes a tea and flavors the CoW so well. We also add sugar to it, I didn't mention that above.
I cook mines with almond milk it’s taste amazing
How is the consistency with almondmilk?
I add condensed milk instead of sugar and it taste yummy.
My great aunt used to too but I never have that on hand.
I really like that pan you poured the cream of wheat into. What kind of pan is that?
I'll link it in the description box.
@@DanielleLaShawn I don’t see the link in the description box. Is there another link that I should look for? Thanks
I grew eating both and plus ARROZ con leches and maizena. But yes I always had it done with milk . We would add strawberry jam , peanut butter bomb and cinnamon powder . With some toast Don mega .
You made that sound amazing! Lol
I make it with milk. You can use any type of milk, since I'm lactose intolerant I use Lactaid.
Yes. You definitely can.
@@DanielleLaShawn try it, you'll love how creamy it is 🥰
My son those make his own cream of wheat
Good video, thx. We never use Canola oil or Canola Butter. Not good for the heart. Eurusic Acid. We only use real honest to goodness butter.
It tastes better, too!
also why do you add butter? what does that do to it. sorry never seen that done before just curious
It gives it more flavor, makes it taste buttery and more rich. My grandma and aunt always added it and it doesn't taste right without it to me now. 😩
I always make extra so I can fry up the left overs. Eat with honey, syrup or just butter salt and pepper.
Wait a minute...fry it like a fritter or patty! That sounds delicious
Is cream of wheat, farina, and corn meal the same thing
I think cream of wheat is farina, but I've tried different brands like Malt-O-Meal and the flavor isn't exactly the same. Corn me isn't the same it's made from corn vs wheat.
@@DanielleLaShawn Was wondering the same thing- COW vs farina. So thank you for clearing it up for me. But how about semolina and farina- same thing too?
About to make this right now
Let me know what u think.
1 and 1/4 water to 3 Tbsp cream of wheat
Drop that unhealthy butter and find yourself some Kerrygold or other Grass fed butter, great video!
Doesn't it taste bland cooked in mainly water? My soviet mom always cooked it in milk. I'll give this a go at some point and see the difference 😊 this can be more diet friendly if you use a sweetener.
Once you add the sugar, milk, salt, and butter, it's really flavorful.
@@DanielleLaShawn I've just made it. It tastes a bit lighter than the full milk version but i still enjoyed it. I will definitely make it like this when i diet 🙂, just with less butter.
@@DanielleLaShawnAlso ignore the negative comments. I like seeing how other people from other cultures/countries cook the same food i eat.❤❤❤
Niceee 5 star would recommend
Thanks!
This is not a from scratch recipe, it's from the box.
Thanks
Sometimes i add my own fruit to it like peaches or blueberrys
Yum 😋
@@DanielleLaShawn Its delicious exspeacially on a cold morning..
Mean while I’m in my kitchen at 3am trying to make cream and wheat for the first time 😂
How'd it go?
Boil the water with cinnamon spice
That could be tasty
When I make farina with milk it doesn't come out right. It actually comes out better when I make it with water than when milk. But I love the taste better with milk
So how do I make it with milk without it being hard lumpy etc
I always cook it with water then add milk to make it creamier.
@@DanielleLaShawn ok I'll try it
Isn't cream of wheat and farina the same thing? But I love both been eating it since I was a baby. How do you make it without lumps cuz sometimes mine comes out lumpy which I hate
And never knew you can make it with milk too. I gotta try that one day
Yes, I think different brands call them different things, but they're the same.
@@DanielleLaShawn ok. How do you make it without lumps
Whisk vigorously when pouring it in and until it starts to thicken.
I do mines with sugar and cinnamon 😋
This is Cream Of Wheat from a store purchased boxed product, certainly not "from scratch" .
Ummm... It's not instant. Were you expecting me to harvest and grind the wheat?
It is from scratch, because what’s in the box is raw product. COW has not been prepared in any way, just like a pack of dry rice.
My dad buys me cream of wheat
🥰
Cooking it tomorrow
reminds me of cornmeal porridge.
Do you make it sweet or salty? Do you use milk or just water in cornmeal porridge?
I use mapple syrup instead of sugar.
😋😋
Love you story and your recipe
Thank you😊
Thank you!
What do I do if it’s to watery 🤧
Add more of the cream of wheat
Yummy
😋
Maybe if you are doing a recipe to share - you could measure some stuff?
my mom doesn’t use water just milk
I'm sure that's good. My aunt used to use water, milk and sweetened condensed milk.
Omg I tried it it was amazing
Lol gotta love a good bowl of cream of wheat
Please share how to make MALTOMEAL FROM SCRATCH! It's so expensive now!
You would have to actually grind the wheat to make the actual cream of wheat (or malt-o-meal0 granules. I'm sure whatever equipment you'd need from that would be much more expensive. But if you want to know how to do that I won't be able to help, though you could most likely find a video of someone doing it.
LOVE Malt-O-Meal. To make it from scratch though, you'd also need the malted barley, as well as the ground wheat. Too much work and equipment, lol. I get approx. 12 servings per box, of Malt-O-Meal. It's not super expensive at, say, Walmart; at $4.38 for one 36 oz. box, 12 servings comes to about 36.5 cents per serving, for me. :)
Looks good Danielle 😋
Lump Gang where you at 😆
😂😂😂
Great idea!
Thank you! ❤️
I grew up eating oatmeal and just tried cream of wheat for the first time. OMG my life has been changed. Goodbye oatmeal! Next grits.
Lol, people who hate the texture of oatmeal will probably love cream of wheat
Why not oatmeal? I heard it’s good for health. 🤷🏻♀️
Who's been eating my porridge
genuine sista
What is cream of wheat made of
It's just ground wheat. Maybe they use a different part than they use for bread. Idk honestly.
Was I the only one who had it with raisins?
Lol, I've never had it with raisins before. I didn't even realize that was a thing, but it makes perfect sense.
Is this a prebiotic ?
.
@@DanielleLaShawn you just typed a piriod there and I don't know what that means .
Honestly, I doubt it.
It was smooth. No lumps my family said it was a success
No lumps is key!
At 4:00 I can 100% AGREE that I like my women the same way!! "I want mine kind of thicc".
I don’t use sugar I just use salt
Hell yea girl
Lol
My wonderful jamaican grandmother makes it for me every morning,❤️ I'm 37 years old lol 😆
Is it suji ?
Not sure if that's what it's called in other cultures.
nope.
From scratch would mean you’re not using the box
You're welcome to pick and grind the wheat so that you can eventually end up with what's in the box and then try the recipe.
_"From scratch would mean you’re not using the box"_
That is true. The instructions are fine; but the title is misleading, sorry.
It is from scratch, because what’s in the box is raw product. COW has not been prepared in any way, just like a pack of dry rice.
well done
Thank you!!
🤤🤤🤤
😋
This isn't from scratch, this is out of a box from the grocery store.
Ok, when you figure out how to harvest and process the wheat to make it from scratch make sure you come back and drop the directions for us. We'd love to know how to do that.
@@DanielleLaShawn No offense Danielle. I just didn't want to settle for another box in my pantry. Since I couldn't find a recipe from scratch on YT I went to DDG and found this one. The wheat already being grown, harvested and winnowed, this was the kind of recipe I was looking for. Maybe you could try it and make another video. Here goes:
Ingredients
1/2 cup whole wheat berries, freshly milled
2 cups milk
Pinch of salt
2 Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. maple syrup
Toppings of choice
Instructions
1. Grind wheat berries in a grain mill or other kitchen appliance.
2. To a saucepan, add wheat cereal, milk, and pinch of salt.
3. Cook on medium heat for several minutes until cereal is bubbling and thickened.
4. Add butter and maple syrup, plus whatever toppings you desire. Serve immediately. Enjoy!
It is from scratch, because what’s in the box is raw product. COW has not been prepared in any way, just like a pack of dry rice.
@@lastochka100 You misunderstand my comment, the words you use are important based on ones perspective. When the video creator titles her video "from scratch" coming out of a box from the grocery store isn't scratch. From my perspective, when searching for a way or how it was done, "making cream of wheat from scratch", I was searching for the way a old time farmer actually grew the grain, harvested it, winnowing it, then took the grain and made it into cream of wheat...From scratch generally means from the end result of the harvest (wheat kernels) to the table plate or bowl in this case. What did the farmer's wife (the culture back then) do to the grain in order that it might become "cream of wheat". Did she crush the grains, (how did she do that) did she mill the grain, did she have to soak the grains and then dry them before cooking them, how long did it take, did she boil them down. The is what " from scratch" means. The "foods " you get in a box in the middle of the grocery store are not from scratch, those are "processed foods". the majority are not healthy in the least. Sorry, young person...please look up pictures of wheat. That is not what you see in the box from the store. Be Blest.
@@Ariel-xz8lg In that case, you should type something more specific in your search engine. And for as “young” as I might be, I know how “be blessed” is spelled. 😉
This is on point banging as fuck
Add more sugar
Don't mind if I do... 😌
😋😋😋😋👍
