Origins - Call of Duty Zombies Review Series

- The first half of Black Ops II Zombies put the mode in a rough spot. TranZit and Die Rise... didn't resonate with players, to put it lightly. But then came in Jason Blundell and the campaign team with the one-two punch of Mob of the Dead and Origins, which breathed new life into the mode. I've always said Mob of the Dead was an abject masterpiece, but Origins has always been a bit more divisive. I hated it back in 2013 when I was an edgy little prick, but almost a decade later, I think it's time I gave it another real chance. Have my views changed since then? Let's discuss!

Woah, hey guys! Welcome to CoD Zombies. Lemme guess...
I needed a break from the Persona 3 Retrospective, so I figured it'd be fun to take a couple weeks off and cover a map that a lot of you have been asking for. Consider this one a filler episode.
I'll be 100% honest, I only really brought up the P3 video's progress at the end so I had an excuse to say some real cheesy shit. It's true though. The only thing that matters to me in regards to content creation is that the people who do show up have a fun time! And hopefully, you all enjoyed this one, too!
P.S: I am aware of that one typo. I seen't it! And I'm not spending 5 hours re-rendering the video to fix it lol
Really looking forward to the Persona 3 video, it's nice to have a content creator who can focus purely on what interests them AND happens to continually cover the two franchises I hyperfixate over :)
Hey rizzo, I’m not sure if you plan on doing more zombie reviews anytime soon but Id love to see an IX review since it’s the only bo4 map you haven’t done. Definitely wasn’t expecting this review tho, hope your doing well!
Kinda bummed the P3 prelude isn't pulling the same number if views but I guess it makes sense as to why. It's a pretty different audience after all. Only reason I haven't watched it is cos if spoilers. I very much intend to play that game and tbh it's the most appealing one to me theme wise. So believe you me I'll come back to watch the shit out of that full video when I beat the game.
HE LIIIIIIIIVES!
rizzo what mod where you using to make the zombies run like the verruckt sprinters
I could listen to this man talk about literally anything for hours
This has to be the most accurate statement on this site😂
His voice is so damn soothing
Exactly, God he is such a good content creator
Fr. I don't even like Zombies but I like this guy talking about it
Rizzo asmr
Is if just me but almost every other zombies content creater is dropping off but rizzo is still getting so much better
Kinda sad to see it tbh, the zombies community isnt as live as it used to be
Chrrsm is doing pretty good
@@Vkiller711 Kind of hard to keep going when there’s not much content to make vids on anymore
Cause the community itself falling off
@@kakyointhemilfhunter4273 it's not just the game though. The big youtubers themselves have been making less interesting videos over the year. It's not the game itself. Unless it's vanguard. Proof is people like Samuel the 17th. He is blowing up. And many people like him aswell.
Something worth noting about not being able to shoot the gravestones during the ice staff upgrade quest is that the player can technically swap out their staff for any bullet based weapon. Due to how the staves work, they'll spawn in back at the bottom of the excavation site and can just be picked up again after you finish the step. Incredibly unintuitive but a band-aid fix to that issue.
Yeah, but you still shouldn't have to swap it out at all.
The Gravestones should be able to be destroyed, no matter what you're holding.
@@N-GinAndTonicTM yeah that’s just a dumb design choice. Like a powerful ass weapon should be able to destroy a freaking gravestone
The thing I appreciate about Rizzo, is even when we disagree on the quality of something (like this map which I love and he's not fond of) he manages to articulate his points so well that even if my opinion doesn't change I come away agreeing with the map's flaws he brought up, they just aren't deal breakers for me.
Anyway enough serious talk how do you get the MP-40 on Moon Rizzo?
Couldn’t agree more.
Great point.
I agreed with a lot of the flaws, except the panza, I personally think he’s the only zombie boss which still scares me and that adds so much to the map.
@Danny McCrea yea i love the panzer, he actually makes zombies very interesting on early rounds
Perfection is overrated it’s the flaws in something that makes it special
The panzer being a complete bullet sponge in Bo3 origins is the soul reason I prefer Bo2 origins
I actually like the beefy panzer, it gives incentive to grind for the staffs
Trip mines do the trick if you don’t have mark 2 or ray gun
Maan just watching this video really really makes me happy I've had such a bad day today and just seeing you with your reviews really make my day. Like you don't stripe away from anything you keep your content how you want it you add just a little bit of funny stuff out of nowhere to make your audience laugh this is the reason why I keep coming back to your channel I love it so much you really do take time in your work and never rush your content I love this channel so much.
The "Tombstones not getting destroyed by the paped Mouser, Ray Gun MK2 and explosives" was a thing in the Bo2 version of Origins
It's still like that in bo3. At least for the mauser
Pretty sure it’s still in BO3
Pretty sure he's referring to both versions
It’s cool to see that you prefer the BO3 version. I personally prefer BO2 (like the lighting more, better guns, and as an Easter egg player it cannot be overstated how big a game changer the fire staff glitch is) but BO3 really has its positives and isn’t far behind it. The way people talk about BO3 origins you would think it’s die rise or something.
Aside from that you've got less obnoxious mud, a less tanky panzer, the shield glitch for Samantha's stone, and less pop in on PC.
@@josealcazar2922 I love bo2's version but to give u a helping hand with bo3's popping, increase the rendering scale ( not the resolulution ) to 1.5 or full 2? and you won't see the popping anymore. I don't know why the lod / hide bias is coded to render scale which also increases the texture resolution unlike on bo2 where there are way way less of popping and the popping can be completely removed by tweaking setcull( max ) & r_biasskinned & rigid -1000.
If I had one problem with the BO3 version it’s the zombie spawn combined with the mud, it’s my literal hell
@@davemac9563 That’s understandable. For me I like how absurd the BO3 version is. BO2 origins was basically the first zombies map with modern fast paced gameplay instead of the slow shit from before so the move to BO3 made it pretty insane
The panzer health and mud speed are more than enough reason to only play the Bo2 version imo.
It might be a little silly but Origins is actually what got me interested in WW1. Granted it wasn't until Battlefield 1 came out that I truly became fascinated by it, but it's fun to see the little attention to details that Treyarch put into the map that reflect the conflict...even if the trenches and no mans land layout make no sense but its for good map flow so it's ok. Great video as always John, love your reviews and the positivity the comes from the channel.
Truly unique map. Ww1 hardly ever gets a setting in games always ww2
i think what i love the most about rizzos reviews is that even if i disagree we explains his issues with the map in a way that i can go "yeah i can see where your coming from" or "yeah i can see why that would be a big deal for someone"
Love this review series man, each video is so in-depth and well made.
Glad to see you back man, I missed you. Soooo, when are we gonna see a review on vanguard zombie😂?
He said he would only review it after it's finished and if he has enough to say about it
When NoahJ456 makes the fire bow tutorial
@@JohnnyJohnnyJohnnyJohnnyJohnny It was a joke man, but anyway, thank you
As always, a stellar video with great (Braaap tier) editing!
I have a personal rule about UA-cam creators. When they branch out and do other stuff, and I always try to give their other content a chance because it’s the same personality/editing I love. I don’t know jack about persona, but a ~2 hour Rizzo video sounds like a dream come true.
Ever since Lex dropped off, you’re easily my favorite zombies youtuber/UA-camr in general. Thanks for the laughs and great content!
we gonna ignore the fact that he made it to round 112 for a 4 seconds of gameplay. Edit: It was more than four seconds so don't be rude in the replies.
Rizzo, I could watch you talk about zombies maps every day of the week. I absolutely love all of your analysis videos, especially your Cold War videos. You have no idea how much you brightened my day by releasing this video as a surprise. I hope you had a good time making it because I’d love for you to cover more Zombies maps. But if it was in fact just a filler video, then I can live with that. Keep doing what makes you happy, but know that this made me and many of your viewers incredibly happy!
Truly beautiful, the presentation, all of it is just, amazing chief. Your style has aged like fine wine and im Proud of you! The fact you went back and did a retrospective on this map is cool as hell, even if you weren't the biggest fan of it, this perspective is truly appreciated. Hell yeah!!
Another excellent video, Rizzo. Looking forward to the Person 3 retrospective! I think it's fair to say we can always count on you for this level of quality, and I'm just glad you're still enjoying the process.
It’s so refreshing to hear someone say that puzzles that require long stretches of downtime to process, solve, and complete, are horribly implemented in just about all of Zombies. I’m a fairly new player, I got introduced to the mode by a friend at the beginning of the pandemic, so I got thrown in the deep end with this stuff and kinda quickly came to the conclusion that Zombies is just a badly designed mode. In retrospect I don’t think that’s at all fair, I didn’t have the context for the arc, if you will, that Zombies took to get to the Blundell era in terms of design, but I’ve still never ever thought that puzzles that seemingly require the absence of the mode’s defining feature (it’s literally the name of the fucking mode) are a good inclusion, and it severely hampers my enjoyment of otherwise-wonderful maps
Okay so maybe no one will read this, but I read this comment and thought why your friend would introduce a new player with the map origins. And then I realised that the begin of the pandemics was 2 years ago...
Come on, like, I see your point, but at the same fucking time, not all zombie maps are like Origins. The very same Zombies Chronicles AND bo2 ALSO come out with maps that don’t even have pack-a-punch.
Not only if you, without any issue, prefer simpler experiences they exist, but to start off with the most complex ones (like also Shadows of Evil to name another) is just stupid. It is obviously going to be biased against unexperienced players, and it sucks that you had to suck it up because of your pro-wannabe friend.
As a zombies veteran i have to disagree. The hard maps like origins are the most replayable to me today
I also strongly dislike these puzzles. If you pause your game to solve them out on paper, it can be fun the first time, or possibly more on solo (such as the Dead of the Night spinning puzzle on the statue), but that can drag out the game, especially if you have friends with you and are holding up other people. If they are going to make puzzles like that, they need ways to hold zombies indefinitely (which some maps do as shown, but most don’t).
Overall though, I still strongly prefer the newer Cold War eggs where you can reasonably solve the puzzles on your own (I did the entirety of Mauer this way). I kind of wish the execution was a little more difficult, but it was still much better than the nightmares of most Blundell maps, especially in the long stretch of Zetsubou through Tag der Toten. Fun to play, but a nightmare to do the quest, especially without cheat sheets/a good memory.
Well there’s plenty of casual maps to introduce new players to like Kino, Der Riese, Ascension, Call of the Dead, Town, Tranzit (somewhat), IX, Die Maschine, Gorod Krovi. And most of the maps I listed are excellent maps. But these complex ones like Origins and Shadows are extremely well-liked and replayable. There’s plenty of stuff to do. Not to mention, the staffs are entirely optional. If you don’t want a staff, then go power the 6 generators, hit the box, and run in circles. Why limit the zombies maps and ruin the fun of the rest of us because you feel left out? Just scale Origins down to your own level. Although I’ll admit it’s impossible to do this on Shadows because of its extensive and tedious PAP process, but still.
Great video, incredibly insightful and presented amazingly, while also providing fair criticisms of origins. I love to watch videos from content creator that are competent and passionate about their work. Rizzo is the best out their for this type of content, glad to have found him.
Loved the review Rizzo. Always nice seeing Zombies content of older maps you've alluded too in past videos. I think reviews of the smaller scale maps (aka World at War maps) would be pretty interesting, assuming you do what you did here and compare all iterations of the maps. Nobody really talks about the Black Ops 1 variants of the WaW maps.
I speak for everyone when I say that we all look forward to your uploads! Some of the best zombies content around :)
22:45 Out of all the references to be used a Civvie 11 reference was the last one I would thought of. Glad to see you as a man of culture Rizzo
Another certified hood classic from you to nobody's surprise. I'm still shocked you actually made an Origins video!
I'd love to see you cover more of the classic zombies experiences you mentioned in this video but equally I'd really enjoy a deep dive into maps like Spaceland and Shadows Of Evil. Those 2 in particular seem ripe for discussion and breakdowns for their gameplay.
I can't wait to see that Persona 3 video. Hearing you talk about other things you're passionate about is just as entertaining as your zombies deep dives. Take care man :)
I've been waiting for this review for so long and was giddy when I saw it in my feed. Thank you Rizzo!! Also can we all just appreciate that we're getting these awesome videos... WITHOUT ADDS????
I love your reviews! I'll listen to just about anything you talk about simply because you present your content so well! I can't wait to see what you do next!
Absolutely amazing video as always. Your writing and editing are absolutely top notch. Your channel and content is one of my favorites on UA-cam by far. Keep up the good work!
oh and can't wait to see the Leftovers Origins episode
Always love your vids Rizzo! This map is generally regarded as one of, if not the best zombies map. I've had my fair share of problems with it, but for some reason I've held it in high regard and always come back to it. I hate the ultimate staff steps, the mud in certain places, the second Easter egg step (and the fact that the first step is half the Easter egg because it takes so long to upgrade all of the staffs...), the ending and the Samantha quotes at the beginning of what feels like every single round.
However, I forget all of these things regularly and come crawling back. Doing the reverse rainbow perk challenge on BO2 with a friend of mine was some of the most fun I've ever had in zombies and that challenge took some as we made a rule to not save zombies so that we would traverse through rounds more quickly. Being at round 20 without jug feels exciting on this map as you're constantly on the verge of dying, but with the shield can definitely play tactically enough to avoid any damage.
Aside from that, I'm glad to see you put most of my thoughts into a well articulated video and also bring up things I've never noticed. Just wish you spoke a little bit more about the Easter egg and the Maxis Drone. Can't wait till your next video!
Never thought I'd see the day that Rizzo plays Origins again
I absolutely love the editing in this review. Great review all together
Welcome to Jrrizzo, the only guy who makes high quality Zombies content even when times are rough. Love you dude.
Finally...the Origins review. Been waiting since 2016 for this one
Great review rizzo! I love origins, but I also despise it, so it’s cool to see someone but my feelings into an actually well thought out video. And I always love your shots in your videos, they’re so cinematic. Have a nice day
You really topped yourself with your transitions and editing, great stuff!
I am so glad to see a zombies UA-camr not going full fanboy over origins. Love you Rizzo!
@@smugplush if I watch zombies I always watch rizzo. He's that guy that's really cool but isn't known by many
36:00 I'm glad you brought this up, I was wondering throughout the video why The Giants looked so good. Great video Rizzo, like you said in the video would love to see you review Der Eisendrache again.
Phenomenal video and great outlook on life and overall positive personality. Appreciate this video and hope to see more OG zombie map reviews in the future
This was my first ever DLC map I bought back in the days and I loved everything about it even though I sucked at it, and I finally managed to complete the EE after a long time with my friends and I must say, hunting the EE was so fun and completing it was satisfying
Ngl, i got so surprised and excited when i saw A. Rizzo uploaded and B. They did an origins review, genuinely made a kinda stressful past few days better, thanks rizzo!
At work looking for aomwthibg to listen to while bagging some ice, see Rizzo uploaded an Origins review, immediately get excited and watch it all the way through. Fucking hell the videos get better every upload.
Awesome video man. I didnt even know the panzer used the wrong sound.
Very good presentation skills, excellent choice of visuals and impressive editing. Very well done
As per usual, loved every second of your review :) really excited to hear you might review some older maps too. I would have put Samantha having an American accent in the nitpicks haha that one still bugs me to this day.
8:40 Loved the DBD gag. As someone with almost 5,000 hours in that game, I'd love to see you review some killers or chapters one day!
Thank god my man back with another video. This will keep me going
Hey Rizzo I just wanted you to know that your videos on Cold War zombies Convinced me to try the game out and I gotta say I’m having an amazing time both campaign and zombies are a blast so thanks for the reviews and keep up the great work
I haven’t been on Twitter so I haven’t been checking your tweets but I’m glad this came out, I’ve been waiting for this for so long not ironically
Mr. John rizzo666yt, you have made another wonderful UA-cam video and you even went through the effort of making the section Names in the Origins text. A absolutely wonderful video.
the production on this video is insane, well done Rizzo :)
I was so glad to hear the finished track in the conclusion section. Very nostalgic
Wow i am new in this channel and I really really like this review video, I like the way you narrate your videos, I really enjoyed it💙
Correction - there’s actually a third map regarding the “holding zombie” thing. In Firebase Z, you can trap a zombie in an essence trap and you can run freely for 3 minutes without having it hit you every 0.5 seconds (provided there are no other zombies around). This is incredibly useful for the bubble step for one of the essence canisters and the dartboard for the RAI-K.
Another great review, I hope you continue to make reviews
the spawn room also has the fuse box to upgrade the electric staff and also a place where you hold F to activate a song, that map was great!
Honestly, I knew I would love this as soon as I saw the stylistic opening cards for the parts.
It's the boi Rizzo back with yet another review, I'm already expecting the reverb fart
It’s always a treat when Rizzo posts a video
I love the way you critique things! You focus on little things! Even when I disagree with you I still understand you and appreciate your viewpoint because you clearly put a lot if work into your videos and thoughts. Thank you!
It's always a good day when Rizzo uploads
Never was a big fan of this map and the direction zombies took afterwards but I appreciate it’s existence and the fanbase that surrounds it. Big fan of Der Eisendrache, Zetsubou No Shima, and Gorod Krovi though. I really dig those maps.
A nitpick I'd like to add is the Olympia and Remington being in the intro, but not in the map itself
The greatest piece of zombies youtube content of 2022 just dropped
I thought the lil zombie blood ee was for that one step where ya gotta see the fallen zombie pilot but sweet nonethless, thank you for informing me on shit I didn't even know!
In true Rizzo fashion, whenever he brings something up (Chaos storyline cancelled), it becomes invalidated. Thought we escaped this after the Cold War review series.
Although I am super excited for that.
Wow, this is truly a welcomed suprised. Especially since I thought you were still purely working on persona 3. It's more surprising for someone since in one of your older map analysis you kinda said you'd never do one on this map
"Maxis' amazon drone form" that got me 😂😂 great vid!
Bruh im a avid enjoyer of both zombies and persona so hearing your p3 review is gonna be 2 hours long is right up my alley
Iv always loved how much effort u put into these videos.
7:22 funny that you referenced Plinkett in this, I literally just recently got done watching his entire Star Wars review series lmao.
The fact that black ops 1 crawlers NEVER bleedout is truly amazing. I just wish every zombies game had bo1 crawlers
Wow, I was actually surprised to get the notification for this map from you Rizzo. Now let's see how your opinion on the map is now after just about 11 years of release. .
I’ve been waiting for this since you did a post about it on twitter LFGGGGGGGG
I'm surprised you didn't mention this in the nitpicks section, but when you shoot the robot's foot in the Zombies chronicles version of Origins, instead of a normal explosion, it uses a hell hound explosion effect, complete with the SFX that plays after you kill a hellhound.
Please do more Black Ops 1 & 2 maps! I would love to see your thoughts on all of the zombies chronicles maps!!
If you do some of the smaller sized maps, I'd love to see some of BO1's maps. Shang is great but I'd also like to see COTD. It may be quite a bit larger than the maps you suggested at the end of your video, but it has such a divided community opinion on it, and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
This is one of the most underrated channels on UA-cam, without question
The panzer sound effect that is missing in BO3 SOMETIMES plays; sometimes I hear right after the DE one. I have heard it quite a few times when I’ve played, Although it’s much more faint
I hope you do more movie reviews! I honestly loved your review of Logan and Transformers 4! I would love to know your thoughts on the movie Interstellar
Yeah what happened to those reviews?
I love how complex this map is, that’s how I like my zombies tbh lol
Always great to hear a Civvie 11 clip. Top 10 Videogame Reviewer crossovers of all time
You can't just drop a good fucking surprise to my day like this
Always good to see a Rizzo upload
holy shit how do you work so fast it feels like every other month you got a neat cool video just done and out its really cool
Actually knowing how to do the staff steps properly is pretty cool, I personally can decipher the ice and fire puzzles pretty quickly without an external resource. The wind staff still sucks though as I don't have time to do that kind of math in solo while holding a zombie
Hmm, rizzo theres two minor things i take issue with, pertaining to the red dig sites, i believe theres 16 instead of 15, those being:
1 Between Generators 1 and 2, just outside the laboratories.
2 Between Generators 1 and 2, next to the Remington 870 MCS wallbuy.
3 At Generator 2, at the cul-de-sac trench, in front of a wheelbarrow.
4 At Generator 2, behind the Tank Station, right next to where the tank stops.
5 Between Generators 1 and 3, halfway inside the Fire Tunnel.
6 Between Generators 1 and 3, next to the B23R wallbuy.
7 At Generator 3, next to the repairable barricade.
8 Next to the Excavation Site on Generator 4 side, where one of the Staff of Fire parts lands.
9 On the tank's path to Tank Station near one of the Staff of Lightning drop-off points (accessible from No Man's Land).
10 at Generator 4, next to Juggernog.
11 Next to the Excavation Site on Generator 5 side, on an Odin's footprint.
12 On the tank's path to Church, near the dropdown to the cul-de-sac (accessible from No Man's Land).
13 At Generator 5, in front of the soul chest.
14 At Generator 6, next to the Remington 870 MCS wallbuy.
15 Near Church, on the tank path to Tank Station, accessible from basement of Church.
16 Near Church, on the tank's returning path, accessible from basement of Church.
They were made to be 16 so every player in a 4 player match could theoretically find 4 and use double tap from the reward to have 8-9 perks, in solo we can only see the 4 because of the limit.
As per the Zombie blood carriage, if you activate it, and the next round it rains, it will remain unlit until the next non raining weather cycle.
Hope this helps! :D
another absolute banger from rizzo (scientists don't understand how he keeps doing it)
ya know what, that intro to the story section sounds like a really good set-up for a proper reboot of the franchise if they didn't go full multiverse. Like, the 4 of them just trying to survive in WW1 europe as the zombies spread out, trying to figure out the mysteries of Sam and Agartha. Maybe its like, the trek to Berlin or Stalingrad, so you can have a season going from Eisendrache to Berlin to Stalingrad. Honestly, knowing where the Aether story went and whats followed it since, i absolutely would've preferred that
I love upgrading the staffs. No matter how many times i do it i feel like a god when i somehow still remember the lightning staff switch’s
You know its funny; I always agree with you on what is good and what is bad in a map, but I don't always agree with your overall conclusions on the map's overall quality. It goes to show how whether we truly like or dislike a map all depends on what individual aspects we value more than others.
Thats something i always like being reminded of when I watch these reviews.
Reviews great as always man!
Great to see your take on origins and cant wait to see your take on persona 3!!
One the best zombies UA-camrs right now
19:40 Hey Rizzo, just wanted to point this out. You could have also mentioned the plant in Zetsubo No Shima. Other than that though, great video as always.
10:50
Can I just say that your transitions in your recent videos have been really good?
You've come a long way and I'm really proud of you! Hope to see you getting better and better rizzo!
Thank christ you mentioned the BO3 campaign. Part of me was starting to feel like I was the only one asking just what the hell was going on there
Great video Rizzo. I had honestly completely forgotten about the Origins ending until you brought it up. God, that ending really was bafflingly awful at the time, and looking back on it now, it didn't even provide any new story info that any of the BO3 DLC maps didn't. From what I've seen, the Origins ending gets a pass from the community now, probably because A- the consensus is that it's a top 5 zombies map of all time (whether or not you agree), and B- the Revelations ending prompted way more anger and frustration, without nearly as much of an after-the-fact explanation like Origins got.
“The ice staffs Activison Blizzard” made me laugh way more than it should have loool
Well, this just dropped out of the sky and into my sub box, like a gift from God.
Fucking amazing work Rizzo.
I've been waiting for this🔥
You're a Legend bro🔥
the amount of times i’ve emptied guns that were fully loaded on the panzer and they still don’t take damage is crazy
