Short answer: yes.
Long answer: affirmative.
USA is a union of states the states are "united"
Saying that the United States is a country is like saying that the EU is a country please Americans USA is not a country every state has its own laws same as the EU and you can cross the open borders and again same as the EU.
@@zaujimaveinformacie4008 Federal law still supercedes state law. He mentions the states that have legalized marijuana and how they get around that. Legally speaking though the federal government can still enforce those laws but they choose not to because it would be incredibly expensive and unpopular. As a non-American, I find this very interesting and confusing. How do they even deal with such overlapping and contradicting powers and laws huh
v3xman Federal laws are laws the whole nation must follow, but the states can technically decide which ones they want to follow or not. State laws are laws that are only follow in a specific state. Like in Colorado, weed is legal for recreational use, but not in Texas or Virginia.
Where are you from? I'm French and seem to have most of it down.
v3x, ignore what Nobody said. Basically, Federal laws apply to everyone and establish a minimum standard for all states. States can enact laws more strict but not less strict. The legalization of marijuana is an act of civil disobedience, but is technically not allowed to be done.
this is why I think that federations are an inefficient form of government.
The United States of America is a representative republic, not a federation.

Technically you can argue The United States is 50 independent countries and their territories held together by a very complex treaty called the constitution.
K K your points where horrible some of them even came from the articles of confederation which we no longer use because our country was on the brink of fucking collapse using that system
K K HOLLY SHIT YOUR THAT FUCKING STUPID. The articles of confederation where the first draft of the us constitution that gave each state the power of a country. The national government would function like the eu and also regulate trade. Ever since the abandonment of the articles of co federation the nations government held most of the power. This is simple shit and you should have had to learn it to pass at least one of your grades. Why did you get those two mixed up? Under the articles of confederation (made long before the civil war) the states had there own money and couldn’t work together the electoral college was created for two reasons, the founding fathers didn’t trust us to vote and because it would be impossible to count all of the votes accurately they divided it up between reps

Obama should have pushed for Puerto Rico statehood in 2008-09 when he had more Democratic power in the Congress.
They had a referendum and majority (61%) desire statehood but their political parties are left Popular Democratic Party and center New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico and the GOP is nervous about letting those two parties and 3 million Hispanics in to change the nature of the Electoral College map. The Republican controlled Congress will deny entrance to keep the electoral map in their favor.

One thing I hate about maps these days is that water is always darker than land. It seems completely opposite in my view and my mind can't process what I'm seeing for 5-10 seconds. I always think the land is water and water is land. When did this abomination become fashionable?
Another thing: The USA's diminutive "America" is badly used. "America" is the whole continent, not just the country.
If you were from Mexico visiting France would you tell people you are American or Mexican?
Larry Snyder Well, that's exactly the problem that I was explaining. It shouldn't be that way.
America is an abbreviation of United States of America. It's perfectly justifiable. Saying you are from the United States of America is a bit of a mouthful, don't you agree? Also, we call ourselves Americans because saying we're United Statesians just sounds stupid.
There is no continent called "America ". There's North America and South America, no America.
STAR FAWKES69 Yes, maybe that's the most accurate reason. But again, it's unfair.
I mean, everyone in the world knows where are you from if you say "I'm American" but if you say "I'm Argentinian" most gonna reply "where the fuck is that?". It's not our fault, of course, but for god's sake...

States are not granted power by Congress, America is a federation, not a unitary state. Specific powers are reserved to the states by our constitution and Congress is granted largely specific and limited powers.
The Civil War wasn't about the supremacy of federal law, that had long been settled by previous court cases that found things like nullification to be unconstitutional. The question at issue in that war was over whether states had the specific power to secede (as well as the future of slavery but that wasn't the legal question at issue).
You forgot that federal land is not subject to the jurisdiction of states.
*United States of America 🇺🇲

The answer to the question is yes, the USA is a Country.
Thanks for this! I always enjoy coming here
RealLifeLore no problem, keep doing what your doing! We always enjoy it.
Well, I guess politicly, Two land masses would separate into separate continents, even though that is not a correct defenition, back then with limited tech, it was correct, kinda like Europe and asia, it depends on how you look at it, Most people could look at it like its two separate continents. But it would also be correct to view it the same, And back when they did, I assume they thought 'hmm, this is separate but huge land masses, lets divide it into north and south' it was basically two correct choices, and they chose the more popular one.
Basically, the Americas were physically split by the US because of the Panama Canal. Essentially, it helped the US get ships from one side of the continent to the other much faster. Conveniently, it opened the month before WW1 started, so it helped the USA get ships from the Pacific to the Atlantic when they joined the war. It was originally proposed by Charles of Spain in 1534 to build a canal through Central America get ships through faster, and was finally built by the US, finishing in 1914. The people of Nicaragua wanted it built through them, however panama at the time had been having a lot of separatist movements, and they split from Columbia in 1903. Panama also wanted the Canal built through them, and were willing to pay a lot less for it. The US agreed to build it, as they also wanted it built so they could get their ships though.
In that case, I think it was probably Manifest Destiny, I've always been taught that the US wanted control over North America, which probably got Americans used to saying North America, rather than just America. If it's not that, then idk what it is.
Europe became a separate continent because of how technologically advanced (for their military) they were, for Africa, i think it was mainly the Europeans generalizing about cultures and ethnicities, and since Africa is only connected by a little bit of land that a canal also when through, the Europeans decided it was easier to say it was a separate continent.
No, It is just a massive conjoining land surrounded by ocean water.
According to Thomas Jefferson, the “several States” are each equal to the “State of Great Britain”. State is simply another name for Country. The U.S. is a Union of States, not a Country.
People born in Puerto Rico are American citizens and have all of the rights of anyone born in the 50 states. They can still vote if they move into one of the 50 states.
...but they cannot run for President.
Bil Carter PRicans are natural born citizens, we had one candidate I forget that was born in Panama...
greg gold yes. I grew up in Puerto Rico. I'm familiar with it. Puerto Ricans are indeed citizens, but they cannot become president, and they cannot vote for president as long as they are residents of Puerto Rico.
Not true. Puerto Ricans, although US citizens, are forever ineligible to run for President if they were born in Puerto Rico to Puerto Rican parents. If they were born in one of the 50 states, they are eligible, but that is a special provision of the commonwealth status of Puerto Rico.
The candidate who was born in Panama was John McCain. As the Constitution mandates, he was a "natural born citizen" of the United States because of the citizenship status of his parents at the time of his birth. The same situation applied to Ted Cruz who was born in Canada to a US citizen.
It doesn't sound fair, but that is the law. Puerto Ricans' citizenship is contingent upon the political status of the island. If Puerto Rico were to become a state, that would then allow anyone born before statehood to be eligible to run for President. Until then, they cannot. Their US citizenship allows them to vote for president, but only if they move away from Puerto Rico and establish residency in any of the 50 states.
Found it, they are good as long as they move to 50 states for 14 years..

You are exactly right. Your critics seem to have never really read the USC or the Federalist Papers. Most of what the Federal government does is illegal IAW the USC.. All that "Federal" land out west is illegally obtained unless it was acquired by the terms of Article 1, Section 8 and for the purposes stated therein. Alexander Hamilton felt there was no need for the Bill of Rights since, he argued, the Feds could not do anything not specifically listed in the USC.. Hamilton has been proven wrong..

it is not. there is no precedent for a state to leave, and the us supreme court has ruled that they cant. not even texas
