Rank Em All - OVERKILL

- Overkill has 19 albums. Ho boy, we need to have a marathon to get all these ranked, but that's what we're gonna do for this legendary thrash metal act. Darlings of the underground that never have quite gotten their just due, Overkill should be spoken with the same charm as the big 4, but doesn't get the same praise and name. But amid their 19, we need to see which are the tops and which are the nots. Let's do this.

I think Horrorscope should be much higher.
I think any order of those albums is right since it's his list. But I also enjoy Horrorscope very much.
By the way, isn't it their bestseller? Over 100000 copies sold or something?
Their best and one of thrash finest in general
It reminds me me of The Years Of Decay and it should be higher. It was a transition from their original guitarist into two new ones, like Slayer
@Douglas Fisher I totally agree
@Douglas Fisher I don't think he even knows the band. He just listened to a few songs and started the video. I agree with you.
5 - Horrorscope
4 - I Hear Black
3 - Under The Influence
2 - Feel The Fire
1 - The Years Of Decay
I hear Black in the top 5. Ballsy bro. It is a fun album that is totally different from the rest though. I love their versions of stoner metal
Rank em all: Motörhead?
Yes and priest
1) Horrorscope
2) From The Underground...
3) Years Of Decay
4) Necroshine
5) W.F.O. / IRONBOUND
Taking Over and Horrorscope are the best of classic Overkill for me.
Hello from the gutter was my 1st taste.
Before you retire you gotta do Rank Em All Exodus
Horrorscope at number 11!? Crazy! Good video CKN. I love all the Overkill albums but Horrorscope will always be at the top for me
My top 4
1. Horrorscope
2. The Years of Decay
3. Bloodletting
4. Ironbound
5:00 Bobby turned 60 years old last year. It's amazing how he can still be over the top and do these inhumane screams!
Great list- I’m still catching up, I hope to see these guys live this spring,
Just saw them this week 3/3/22 with PRONG at The Chance, Poughkeepsie, NY. They STILL got it, what a treat! Great list CK. Hope you doing better.
It's amazing how much momentum and energy Overkill still has. Great list dude 👍
Speaking of thrash,Think we could see flotsam and jetsam next? awesome band
1. Ironbound
2. The Years Of Decay
3. Horrorscope
4. The Electric Age
5. Under The Influence
6. Killbox 13
Ironbound has 2 great tracks and the rest are forgettable, like the rest of their catalog since 2005. Imo of course
Taking Over!
Kreator next??
👍 agreed!
Awesome list man...there are a couple on your list I haven’t listened to in awhile and will definitely get back onto the play list....only thing I would change is flip 1 and 2.
Man!!!! I absolutelly love The Grinding Wheel. Its my number one! Was pretty shocked at how low you put it
Feel the fire to horrorscope are all classics but my favorite is years of decay
Underground and below one of there best horrorscope no1
First band I ever saw in a club, opening for Slayer in 86
Nice list! Would love to see Bolt Thrower
1. The IVth Crusade
2. Those Once Loyal
Taking Over is my favorite.
Horoscope, Years of decay ,Taking Over ,Under the influence, I hear Black top 5 for me
Gasoline Dream and Horrorscope - my favourite songs of all time from them.
I gave you a tough task and you pulled it out. GG Mark and thank you!
I've been an Overkill fan since even before the first EP came out. First time we saw them at L'amour we were hooked and we went to every show we heard about from that point on. Best 80's thrash band for my money bar none. I love that everyone ranks their albums so completely differently. There are no wrong answers. These are my top 10 Kill albums:
1. Taking Over
2. Horrorscope
3. Killbox 13
4. Bloodletting
5. Feel the Fire
6. Wings of War
7. Years of Decay
8. I Hear Black
9. Under the Influence
10. The Electric Age/WFO
Most overrated: Ironbound
Worst album: Immortalis
Got to agree with everything you've said about "The Years of Decay", it's my number 1 as well. But the next two in my top are much lower in your list... "Horrorscope" and "W.F.O.".
1. Decay
2. Horrorscope
3.Taking Over
4. Ironbound
5. Electric Age/ Influence
W.F.O. belongs in top ten
CKN is right about Ironbound...it's the first album I ever heard by them, and the one that made me fall in love with them as a new-age metal teen.
Nice video! My top 5 are:
1. Horrorscope
2. Years of Decay
3. Under The Influence
4. Taking Over
5. Ironbound
My personal Overkill rankings :
1 - The Years Of Decay
2 - Horrorscope
3 - Feel The Fire
4 - Ironbound
5 - The Electric Age
6 - Taking Over
7 - W.F.O.
8 - The Wings Of War
9 - The Grinding Wheel
10 - Under The Influence
11 - Necroshine
12 - White Devil Armory
13 - The Killing Kind
14 - I Hear Black
15 - Bloodletting
16 - From The Underground And Below
17 - Killbox 13
18 - Immortalis
19 - RelixIV
Years of Decay still one of my top ten all-time metal albums. No problem with it at #1. I still think Under the Influence is a top 5 Overkill album though. Fun, silly, and really codified the "klank" bass sound. If anyone wants to learn what metal bass can and should be, this is the album.
I am sure gonna miss you buddy
I dropped my phone when you showed #18 given how high it was on your 2014 AotY list
1. The Years of Decay
2. Horrorscope
3. Killbox 13
4. Taking Over
5. The Electric Age
6. Ironbound
7. The Grinding Wheel
8. Feel The Fire
9. White Devil Armory
10. I Hear Black
11. The Wings of War
12. Under The Influence
13. W.F.O.
14. The Killing Kind
15. From The Underground and Below
16. Necroshine
17. Bloodletting
18. ReliXIV
19. Immortalis
19. Bloodletting
18. The Killing Kind

13. Killbox 13
12. From the Underground and Below
11. Necroshine
10. Under the Influence
9. The Wings of War
8. White Devil Armory
7. The Grinding Wheel
6. Feel the Fire
5. Horrorscope
4. The Years of Decay
3. Taking Over
2. Ironbound
1. The Electric Age
🔥🔥
agree with your number 1, it's the best for me as well. for most of the list, i would have chosen very different. i'd rated Horrorscope, Feel the Fire, Taking Over and eventually I Hear Black a bit or even much higher. And many of the newer releases much much lower, due to a lack of creativity and overall feel of redundance.
That said, because of personal disappointment with albums especially after year 2000, i haven't bought any more Overkill releases.
Here's my top 10
10/ The Killing Kind
9/ Killbox 13
8/ I Hear Black
7/ Ironbound
6/ W.F.O
5/ Under the Influence
4/ Electric Age
3/ Taking Over
2/ The Years of Decay
1/ Horrorscope
As a fan of Overkill since late 80s, I pretty much desagree with your choices.
My top 10 list:
10. Wings of War
9. Under the Influence
8. Feel the fire
7. Killbox 13
6. Ironbound
5. Electric Age
4. WFO
3. Years of Decay
2. Taking Over
1. Horrorscope.
Their worsts by far: Immortalis, Underground, Necroshine and Relivix
The years of decay and horrorscope are my favorites🤘
Necroshine is my favorite.
Hellyeah
The Machine Head-list was abit more interesting (if not really totally unpredictable), because they just have vastly different records.
Still a cool video.
"I Hear Black," turned me off and away from them. It sounds like they were trying catch lightning in a bottle more than once and failed big time
It's a hard task ranking these albums because Overkill is very consistent... I guess I have a little more love towards the 90's and 2000's albums than the 80's and 2010's, with a few exceptions... My list:
19. White Devil Armory (Really the most standard Overkill album)
18. Feel the Fire ( I don't think they had their signature sound quite yet, so I rarely revisit)
17. The Wings of War (Good stuff but still close to standard)
16. Necroshine (I like the experimentation but some songs are just meh and overstay their welcome)
15. The Electric Age (Actually a great album, but I can't help but feel like it's a copy of Ironbound)
14. The Killing Kind (I like the experimentation, but as an album I'd rather nitpick the songs I like from the rest)
13. From the Underground and Below (Now, this may seem a lttle simplistic but it just SOUNDS amazing)
12. RelixIV (I like how Overkill alternated guitar sounds and tones between the 2000s albums to showcase variety... Love the sound but I think it's overrall weaker than the others)
11. The Grinding Wheel (My favorite from the 2010s decade because it reminds me of their 90s phase a little bit)
10. The Years of Decay (not one of my personal favorites but your explanation in the video is exactly why it's top 10 for me, some songs are iconic)
9. W.F.O. ( I think this was more of a return to thrash after I Hear Black and is the type of album you'd get from Anthrax at their peak)
8. Ironbound (Not that they needed a comeback, but yeah it's a perfect album)
7. Immortalis (Maybe not the most perfect, but I love the guitar tones and fluidity, one of the easiest albums to listen to)
6. Taking Over (Took some time to grow on me, but otherwise a perfect thrash album)
5. Killbox 13 (Guitars sound utterly amazing, very close to Bloodletting)
4. Under the Influence (Maybe less ambitious, but to me this album is pure fun and just shreds; my favorite from the 80s)
3. Bloodletting (BEST-sounding Overkill in terms of guitar tone and heaviness)
2. I Hear Black (Like Metallica's black album, it strays from thrash but is damn near perfect)
1. Horrorscope ( I think this is the album that summarizes all of Overkill's capabilities, and great to listen to front to back, first time Overkill worked with 2 guitarists and the results were amazing)
Totally agree, I Hear Black is their black album
Really like their newer stuff, so hear a mix between newer and classics
5 - The Wings of War
4 - White Devil Armory
3 - Ironbound
2 - The Years Of Decay
1 - Horrorscope
White Devil Armory and Ironbound are my favorite modern Overkill albums.
Since this guy has such a hot take of putting horrorscope so low, my hot take would be taking over is really low for me, probably below stuff like ReliXIV and Immortalis, and it’s not like I dislike anything about their old sound, I absolutely love feel the fire and think the song writing and riffs are much better than taking over
holy shit
Hororscope in the top 2 or 3. From the underground and below in the top middle. And Necroshine towards the top. Ironbound he totally got right!
Agree 100% years of decay #1
I still quite enjoy White Devil Armory, When Freedom Rings is one of my favorite songs ever. Other than that my opinions on these albums flip flop a lot, I always love Overkill so it's hard to pin down a definitive list. Years of Decay is definitely my #1 though: I hear a lot of people same it's just a copy of Master of Puppets due to that one similar riff on Elimination and the guitar tone being similar but I don't see it, those two albums are nothing alike to me.
Bobby G. had a bit of man crush on James Hetfield during that time. Down to playing with a white Explorer, and copying Jame's look. But for me It's Years of Decay and then Taking Over.
Immortalis is my least favorite. There are some albums like I Hear Black and WFO that I would have higher but yeah, interesting ranking.
W.F.O. is easily on my top 3
1.Wings of War 2.Grinding Wheel
Best of the other big 4.
(Overkill, Testament, Exodus, Annihilator)
Why the hell didn't I find out about this channel before today.
Damnit I fucked up
Also, EVIL. NEVER. DIIIIIIIIEEEEEEESSSSS!!!
5 Electric Age
4 Feel The Fire
3 Horrorscope
2 The Years Of Decay
1 Ironbound
Love your ranking and input. I always enjoy hearing a fellow 'Kill fanatics viewpoint.
Here's my current ranking. My first 3 never change
1-The Years of Decay. A complete THRASHTERPIECE! I wish Gustaffson found another band to showcase his genius!
2-Horrorscope- Loved the addition of dual guiarists Gant/Cannavino
3-I Hear Black-took the grove of horrorscope to the next level
4-W.FO.
5-Ironbound
6-The Grinding Wheel
7-Necroshine
8-From the Underground and Below
9-RELIX XIV
10-Bloodletting
11-Immortalis
12-Killbox 13
13-Under the Influence-Drunken Wisdom's main riff and Gustaffson's solo are soo good
14-The Killing Kind
15-The Electric Age
16-The wings of War
17-White Devil Armory
18 Taking Over-great songs but mix and production suffers imo
19-Feel the Fire- Same as Taking Over sound quality and mix not so great
Trying to get these on cd is a real bitch
Here is my ranking of Overkill's albums;
ua-cam.com/video/iabupS3vokI/v-deo.html
imagine what will happen if he tries to rate Rage discography
that band is just frantic
Idk how you make it through ReliXIV? My absolute least favorite album by them. Within your eyes and Love are the only two I have on the playlist. Every single album except this I pull 6-9 songs onto the playlist. Way different opinions on this ranking. From the Underground is a definite top 5, that one is awesome. Taking Over is #1 for me. It doesn’t change it’s sound halfway like years of decay does.
19-ReliXIV
18 to 6-Just take all the others and put them any which way, it’s too hard to rank them as all are enjoyable.
5-Horrorscope
4-Years of Decay
3-From The Underground and Below
2-Ironbound
1-Taking Over
damn! relixix is so high wow
This was the last "great" album from Overkill. Ironbound is very overrated imo.
White Devil Armory and W.F.O are some of their best.
I think 'From the Underground...' is underrated and 'Killbox 13' is overrated. I also think 'Ironbound' is overrated. I stopped paying as much attention to them since Killbox 13. Their latest, 'Scorched' is pretty good though and shows Overkill still has some tricks up their sleeve. They still sound fresh for guys in their 60's.
fucking Oooooooverkiiiiiiiil
Rank em all KREATOR
1. Pleasure To Kill
2. Enemy Of God
3. Terrible Certainty
4. Phantom Antichrist
5. Violent Revolution
first 5 great albums after that....just a good thrash band that never strove for greatness. I respect Overkill, and they've made some really good thrash albums, but my issue with them is that they never strove to create anything other than straight forward thrash songs over 19 albums, and more than a couple times just phoned in an album. Bobby G. was the best song writer they ever had. I had every Overkill album but stopped collecting them after White Devil Armory, but owning 19 CDs was enough and I wasn't going to get anything different from them, especially when their first 5 were their best. I didn't like I Hear Black and W.F.O. though. I just wish Overkill, along with Exodus, had added a little progressivness to some of their songs. Straight forward thrashers are great, but to have an entire album/discography of almost the same thing, some better some worse than others, gets boring. There are reasons why some bands sell more than others, and I think Overkill, and Exodus's, limitations as songwriters put them exactly where they belong. Good thrash bands to wreck your neck to but don't offer anything more than that.
I have to respectfully disagree with the part that Overkill was always straight forward thrash metal. If you listen to albums like I Hear Black there's clearly some doomy Black Sabbath qualities there where they slow down. Also as CKN mentioned many groove Pantera like moments and a little progression every now and then. I don't think they would have gained the notoriety they have if they were just a one trick pony.
@@TheOmegaeyes I agree that they experimented minorly in the 90's with a couple different sounds. I personally can't stand I Hear Black. But I stand behind everything else I said. Some people love Overkill for all the reasons that have kept me from loving them. I like progression in a band. When I listen to an album I don't want the same feeling the whole way through. I like albums that have fast songs, slow songs, mid-tempo songs. etc. Overkill does occasionally do this, but not to the extent that keeps me interested. For me Bobby G. was the best song writer they ever had. I wish Overkill had really taken more creative risks with their music and wrote more epic songs.
@@Gregbaltzer I see where you're coming from for sure. Overkill is a very nostalgic band for me since they were the first real metal/thrash band I saw play live and being from NJ it's almost like supporting your home team, lol. The Years Of Decay and Under The Influence have a special place in my heart of metal. I have since moved on to all kinds of other genres and styles. They were never the most versatile but I'm perfectly fine with that. Neither were some of the other thrash greats, Exodus for example.
@@TheOmegaeyes My biggest issue with Overkill though and why I have a hard time with them is that their discography is so huge that it's harder to digest each album, and become intimate with them, than it is with a band of a smaller discography. I love their first 4 albums especially, after that I like most of the albums, but it's hard to distinguish between them. Exodus it's easier to get into their discography because they only have 10 albums. Megadeth is a pretty versatile band but at 15 albums I find it hard to digest all their albums equally. There's only a couple bands I listen to that have huge discography's that I find myself listening to all their albums and that's Iron Maiden, Napalm Death. I honestly think the sweet spot for a band is to have between 5-10 albums, after that it becomes a bit much. I'm actually going through my Overkill CDs and picking my favorite ones and selling the rest because I have 19 CDs of them and I probably only listen to about 10 of them.
ReLIX IV? no. 9 on your list? 🙄😒😑 man I didn't expect that 😳...this album is easily their St. Anger. the fact that you ranked it waaay higher than Horrorscope is kinda ridiculous....and Killbox 13 is your no. 3 😄😁😆 omg
The albums that some people consider bad by overkill have great riffs with catchy and concise songs. I wouldn’t put ReliXIV that high but I like it a lot, and killbox 13 is probably overkill’s most underrated album ever, again I might not put it that high, but killbox 13 is amazing
My list would differ greatly
The Metalhead they should, it’s OVERKILL we’re talkin about.
Make the list then
Dustin Bagneschi ok calm down
I can bet the last Rank Em All will be Black Sabbath 😉
Rank em all six feet under!!😅😅 But seriously!
*Rank Em All* OPETH

Yes! Bobby B. Alfa male if thrash metal!!!. Think between gutter-horrorscope they peaked.
I quit listening at 1:10.... Not an album that should be last. Give it another listen and listen this time please.
Dude he's been listening to Overkill for years and years. He has an opinion that differs from yours, it's that simple
Rank em all buckethead?
Near 300 albums or top 10?
@@MoSweiti666 Rank em ALL lol
Rank em all Porcupine Tree

Ok Thanks LuenerLinguist
The years of decay is the only time when they are close to the highs of Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth
Taking Over!!!
"unique-ity"
-CKN
They're all unmemorable to me
Avenge sevenfold 100% rip off of charley
And overkill’s mascot is much more iconic, because avenged sevenfold just has a generic bone bat with wings on it, but overkill has that unique looking comic book vibed skull bat
