    Great video. Amazing that in such a huge place like UA-cam, you can provide a completely unique analysis and provide things I've never heard from anyone else.

    Nobou Uematsu is my favourite Composer period, without his contribution Final Fantasy would never have risen in the 90s to the heights it did. I have a ton of his albums on my iPod they're always a pleasure to listen to. His music is timeless, he mostly shaped my taste in music.
    Other favourites of mine also are Motoi Sakaruba (Tales of), Masashi Hamauzu (FF), Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) & Koji Kondo (Zelda).

    Thank you for making this! Time will be very very sweet to Nobuo...he is an Empath and he is very open minded. We can all learn a great deal from what he has given us. I can only hope to be a fraction of what he has given to me. "Love" is simply not a strong enough word to describe how I feel about his music.

    Recently subscribed and just wanted to say i'm really enjoying your Intellectual deep dives on all the elements of these games. It's nice to hear the music being discussed as it's often ignored.

      Thanks Phillip :) agree the music is a huge part of the experience - particularly pre-voice acted titles!

    In my opinion, he was the best. His music brought all the emotion into the games that the limited text just couldn't muster.

    The biggest thing for uematsu was the jump from snes to the Playstation. It went from 8 channels to 24 channels and if you listen closely to the music in the snes, while still good, the compositions are seriously hamstrung by not being able to layer enough melodies. Interesting to note that uematsu wanted to quit after ff6 but I guess Sakaguchi convinced him to continue and he composed his magnum opus imo in ff7.

      @AlleywayJack  3 роки тому

      Yeah agree about the layering and you can hear how much more embellished the older tunes are that have made it into the Distant Worlds adaptations. I suppose part of his skill was in gracefully degrading those compositions down to the consoles of the day. I didn't know he wanted to quit after FF6, but I have seen a few interviews where he discusses wanting more composers to collaborate with... which is not surprising since during the 1990s Final Fantasy's were released almost every year, and composing consecutive high quality OSTs must have taken a lot out of him!

      I agree that the Playstations digital sound capability that made uematsu transcend "game music" like you mentioned. Amazing to think that if things had gone differently, he never would've composed those tracks like liberi fatali and eyes on me.

    It's funny coming here and watching this now --- guess you got your wish to have Soken take the reins on another FF title!
    Nobuo Uematsu is just an icon in Final Fantasy, and I have loads of respect for him. FFIX's soundtrack in particular is one of my favorites. Still, in my heart I probably have the biggest soft spot for Shimomura's music. Not only for her work on Final Fantasy XV, but also Kingdom Hearts. Many of my favorite fight and boss battle themes ever come from that series.

      I just completed KH1 for the first time in years. I love the OST Shimomura did for that game, she has huge range.

    XV’s soundtrack was a joy to discover. So many fabulous tracks, like the Cleigne region battle theme. Have you listened to the Radiant Historia soundtrack? It’s made by Shimomura as well and just as impressive if not more.

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I started up XV again the other day, it's a fantastic soundtrack. I forgot they used actual songs on there too, like 'Stand by me' plays when they're pushing the Regalia in the beginning. I haven't heard the Radiant Historia soundtrack, but I love Shimomura so I'll go check it out.

      @@AlleywayJack Radiant Historia’s soundtrack is best experienced while playing the game, if you have a 3DS it’s really worth checking out, pure JRPG goodness with an innovative battle system and a poignant story.

    Great episode & I particularly appreciate your comments about FF being a sort of gateway into appreciating other types of music. It was the same for me & lots of other working class kids I knew who were lucky enough to have access to these games - I definitely owe my vocabulary to FF at any rate, if not my musical knowledge! Do you think the elitism is slowly dying out or is it here to stay?

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks glad you liked it :) love the question. Personally I think that brand of elitism will persist in some form as it's inherent to social class, and rooted in things like private vs comprehensive education systems, investment in arts and humanities (or lack thereof), price of admission etc. So in the UK/USA at least, access to 'higher' arts is tied to class at an institutional level and if we look at famous/professional actors/musicians today compared to 30 years ago, it's an increasingly middle class pursuit.
      That said, I think the internet age has democratised access and appreciation of different music and art in ways never previously possible, and while I think 'influencer' culture is problematic in many ways, it's one recent example where I've seen classically trained musicians building audiences through social media and bridging 'higher' art with people that wouldn't otherwise have any access/interest in it. So technology is definitely shifting things culturally and it'll be interesting to see where it goes I think.

    • @rebecca9904
      @rebecca9904 3 роки тому +1

      @@AlleywayJack yeah I agree with you. I carry on hoping that the next generation will see whole cohorts of humanities/arts students getting to look at games as cultural artefacts but since those disciplines are already being taken apart it’s not all that likely. Either way, your channel/website will continue to be an important place to facilitate access to these kinds of critical discussions for lots of people, I think.

    Uematsu is the GOAT. Never been a fan of Hamauzu. His compositions are boring too me. I prefer the likes of Kenji Ito (Romancing SaGa, SaGa Frontier), Noriyuke Iwadare (Lunar, Grandia) Michiru Naruke (Wild Arms), Motoi Sakuraba (Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Baten Kaitos, Tales Series), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger/Cross, Xenoblade) Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario RPG), Koji Kondo (Zelda, Mario), Jun Chikuma (Faxanadu, Bomberman) and more recently Yasunori Nishiki (Octopath Traveler). Great video!!
