I know people say it’s a crime that Kobe only won 1 MVP, but it’s a shame that Shaq only won 1 MVP. Duncan won 2 but he probably deserved at least 3. But the media were too busy spreading the love by giving MVPs to Iverson in 2001, KG in 2004, Nash in 2005 and 2006, and Dirk in 2007.

The reason why Kobe only won 1 MVP is he played next to Shaq. They canceled each other out. It would create a split vote picking one player from the same team. But I thought Kobe deserved to win at least 3 (2006, 2008, 2009). He only won in 2008. While Shaq should’ve won for 2000, 2001, and maybe even 2005. Perhaps should’ve won it in 1995 that went to DRob and 1999 that went to Karl.
Shaq was more valuable than Kobe when they were together. The Lakers with Shaq but minus Kobe still won over 70% of their games. With Kobe but without Shaq, they became a .500 team. Then we saw Shaq’s impact right away in Miami. Went to the ECF but lost in 7 to Detroit because DWade got hurt. Then won a chip the following year. Prior to Pau, Kobe’s Lakers went 34, 45, and 42 wins. Lottery, First Round exit, and First Round exit to the Suns.
Michael Jordan deserved at least 7-8 MVPs. People say he deserved it for 1993 but I actually thought the voters got it right with Charles Barkley. The Suns had the best record in the NBA. Bulls were only the 3rd best behind the 62-win Suns and 60-win Knicks. The year MJ should’ve won MVPs were in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, and 1998.
In 1989 and 1990, it went to Magic Johnson. I think voters were feeling since Larry Bird had 3 MVPs, Magic deserved at least 3. Now Magic did have a better team record in those years. They won over 60 in 1990 only to shockingly lose to the Suns in the Semifinals. But Jordan’s numbers were probably better than Magic’s and carried lesser talent than when Magic won MVP in 1987, 1989, and 1990.
LeBron James probably should’ve won at least 6 MVPs. I will give him 6 straight from 2010-2015. I will give Steph the MVP for 2016 because they went 73-9. You can argue LeBron deserved it for 2017. Westbrook was on a 7th seed who got bounced in the First Round but he got MVP simply because of his triple-double season we hadn’t seen since 1962 from Big O. In 2018, I think Harden deserved it though. Rockets went 65-17. Cavs only won 50 that year with Kyrie gone.
Everyone hated LeBron in 2010-2011 after The Decision, so that’s why they gave it to DRose. Then the whole, let’s not give him 3 straight MVPs to put him next to Bird because MJ, Giannis, and Jokic got that too. Why is the media so concerned preventing players from doing something Bird did from 1984-1986? 😂 If they deserve it, they deserve it.
I think Gilbert Arenas makes a point that Jokic didn’t deserve MVP in 2021 and 2022. He didn’t have Murray by March 2021 but his team wasn’t great. Jokic deserved it in 2023 and arguably this year of 2024 since OKC and Denver are tied in records. In 2021, it was a shorter season and Nuggets went 47-25 as a 3rd seed. Got bounced by Phoenix. Remember, Suns in 4? That should’ve went to Giannis who won a ring that year but they didn’t want to give him 3 straight. Then in 2022, Nuggets went 48-34 as a *6th* seed. That should’ve went to Steph or even CP3 or Booker. The Suns won 64 that year. Warriors bounced the Nuggets (without Murray) in 5.
Now that Jokic has won 3 MVPs, I think there will be voters fatigue because they stopped giving more MVPs to LeBron after 2013 after he won his 4th. Can’t win his 5th to put him next to MJ. But then MJ deserved more than 5 MVPs he won. He deserved at least 7-8. Bulls went 69-13 in 1997 and MVP still went to Karl. Voters are afraid putting certain players in the same breath as other players. Like you can’t give Giannis a third straight MVP because he will be next to Larry Bird. Doesn’t make sense.
SGA can win MVP next year. I think it’s between him, Ant, and Luka for next year. Voters are already tired giving MVPs to Giannis and Jokic. And already gave an MVP to Embiid out of pity to prevent Jokic winning 3 straight. So it’s going to be Ant vs. SGA for next year. We may get their playoff showdown in this year’s WCF.
Anthony Edwards vs. Shai Gilgeous Alexander is like Michael Jordan vs. Michael Jordan. People don’t realize it, but Shai does play like MJ. He’s very clutch. He never plays out of control. He doesn’t shoot a lot of threes but he’s very efficient. SGA does a lot of his damage from the midrange. I say SGA is closer to 90s Jordan but early 90s MJ because MJ was skinnier. Ant is closer to late 80s MJ. The 80s MJ wanted to posterize everyone.
I love Shai. My heart sank when my Clippers were forced to trade him because Kawhi gave us that ultimatum. I’m still haunted by that trade. But if OKC and Minny do face off in the WCF, I will be rooting for Ant. He’s the more exciting player to watch while Shai is more calm and stable. Ant is the most exciting player since the days of young MJ, young Kobe, Vinsanity (1999-2001), and young DWade.
I got Minnesota in 6 over OKC. KAT is already 28. Gobert is 31. Kyle Anderson is 30. Conley is 36. Other than Ant at 22, McDaniels at 23, and Naz Reid at 24, Minny is not that young. They’re at the prime age to win it all. They have the experience and SIZE to defeat OKC in the WCF. I love you, Shai, but I’m going with ANT-MAN. Perhaps my favorite player since Michael Jordan. Let’s not forget DWade was willing to let LeBron take over his team. MJ would never let another star take over his team.

SGA was on the Thunder for three years in a row that they didn't make the playoffs, yet he's getting ALL the credit for OKC being the #1 seed this year. "Nobody expected them to be here!" Yeah, because SGA never got them there before.
This year was the first for Chet Holmgren, and they get an improved season from Jalen Williams, and they make a huge improvement. So how is that credited to SGA? His stats are almost identical to last season when they went 42-40. OKC's team record improvement was due to the other guys, not Shai.
It's ridiculous that SGA's failure to make the playoffs three years in a row is being spun into the reason why he's MVP this year, because "nobody expected OKC to be this good." And Jokic getting his team into the playoffs every year and finally winning a title is being used against him because "everyone expected Denver to be good." I see what you're doing, Jokic haters.

SGA averaged 31ppg on 51% shooting _last_ season. And OKC won 40 games and missed the playoffs.
The difference is that OKC got Chet Holmgren this season and Jalen Williams took a leap offensively .

Jokic is a deserving MVP, but they always change the narrative to fit who they want to give the MVP. The media are spin masters. If it was in the cards to give it to SGA, they'd spin it and change the criteria. Also, if we're purely using analytics then guards will always have a disadvantage against big men. (Watch them spin a new narrative when they want to give it to a guard).
This award does not mean nothing when you have so many randoms voting
Why not finally create a rating system, it would be much more realistic to vote for the MVP. For example: number of hits 10% impact, shooting percentage 10%, 3p 10%, free throw percentage,... impact on the team 20%, team position at the end of the season 20%...etc. Eliminate voter subjectivity as much as possible.

SGA made NBA history getting the #1 seed while playing 4 fewer games than Jokic. SGA 55-20 w/ NBA Babies while Jokic 55-24 w/ his same squad he's had for years. Denver 2-1 without Jokic, OKC 2-5 without SGA. OKC got More for Less, aka Value, from SGA than Denver from Jokic the consensus best player on the planet. The Future will look back on this season and think NBA voters were ignorant af not to give SGA the MVP for this season with such an inexperienced team. The last two MVP awards were makeups for the previous year. Last year, they gave it to Embiid because everyone felt like he should have won it the year before. This year, they gave it to Jokic because they feel he should have won it last year since he got the chip. So next year will go to SGA, and they'll make it up to the other guy the following year.

SGA made NBA history getting the #1 seed while playing 4 fewer games than Jokic. SGA 55-20 w/ NBA Babies while Jokic 55-24 w/ his same squad he's had for years. Denver 2-1 without Jokic, OKC 2-5 without SGA. OKC got More for Less, aka Value, from SGA than Denver from Jokic the consensus best player on the planet.
