Wow. I don't know how these people got in my music feed but I am sure glad they did ! This is such a piece for a down day. No way you can sit still when they get into that fast piece. Love it !
Hauntingly beautiful winding up in energy to exhilarating. The Gloaming are the sounds of my summer in Baltimore and Sherkin Island, West Cork this year. A must see live.
Only saw your message John today.this is the modo you met in cork city many years ago,Conor the mandola player.might meet you on sherkin next summer for catch up session
I don't know a word of Irish but honestly it was done so amazingly well that I just connected almost instantaneously with the music and the song. This is fantastic! It's so inspiring
The five boys were amazing, there's nothing out there to compare them to, and the Derry crowd; something to proud of for sure!! I didn't think they were going to stop ❤️
that is so incredible!!! it builds up easily and leisurely, then the music flow, no, it flows and bubbles. the whole soule is seized. the body wriggles and wants to dance. at the end of the piece - you are euphoric and very happy. thanks for this experience. i want, i must to thank you a thousand times and more!!!
If Peter Gabriel ever tours again...and I think if my antennae are properly oriented toward Real World HQ's and the signals that grow in radios...a new album is near. In this crazy era of Covid...it may be impossible to put together a world tour as in years past and Peter -- well we need him and musicians like him and these guys ^^^^ THE GLOAMING ^^^^ in the world now more than ever. So if the powers that be grant a single concert livestreamed to the world by Mr. Gabriel, I pray that THE GLOAMING opens in support of that show and even hangs around for a few tunes to make things go just a bit deeper into ancestral memory. Cos that seems to be the land from which this music springs. The grasses of Eire...if only they could sing. Well...
After watching the documentry of how these guys got together.....this was formed on the far side of the Universe as another challenge to us Humans to see how far we could generate energy from music....lol........only kidding.....all I can say to the Lads from The Gloaming thanks....will be seeing you soon.....I'm in Waterford by the way....
An Cul Duibh Re (The Dark Moon Hollow) a place in, I think, Clondrohid parish just east of Cuil Ao, where the singer is from. It's a local song describing the trees and birds etc. of a glen and how beautiful it all is. The words might be in Freeman's collection of (Irish) songs from that area published in about 1920 in the Journal of the English Folk music and Dance Society, and that is available on the Irish Traditional Music Archive now. (Search for A Martin Freeman, and you'll get Songs from Ballyvourney. Click and search there. I have a copy somewhere and look for it.
I dont know what the guy at the piano thought he was playing to but it was not the tune the rest of the band were playing in the late mid to end piece!.
Everest Witman You clearly havent listened to the end solo on the Reel "thats the fast bit" its a complete load of crap and ruins a fine bit of Trad irish playing by the rest of the band!, jasus its terrible, Listen for the bum notes and mistakes!!!.
Barry McGloin Check out the F sharp and E note at 13.05. just proves that he is a wanker and does not have any feelings for irish music,. but this video is not his worst, the Royal albert hall irish President Michael D Higgins consert is the worst attempt at fusing Jazz n Freestyle i have ever heard,. and its the same section of the same reel he completely looses it, seems that he was almost sober on this derry clip but on the albert hall clip he cant let wine out of his sight or grasp,. this is a great example of destroying and mutilating Irish music for commercial gain with no care for the music, and im only talking about this Pianist , the others are indeed masters and they do not need this Pretentious Ass ruining and Riding the piano like a Rodeo cowboy, with his arm waving in the air , he just forgot to yell , Yeee Haaa,. rubbish..ted.
ted ponsonby Wow. You really don't have any idea what you're talking about, clearly, because the fact that there's a piano in this at all takes this outside the realm of strictly traditional Irish music. If you want to hear traditional work (and there's certainly nothing wrong with that) go listen to the Chieftains or Altan instead of bitching about beautiful music that isn't within your tastes.
You will not find better music than this in heaven or here on earth. The Gloaming, the greatest.
It's something special. I don't have words more...
I don't understand the words, but i feel the Music. Thank you.

ted ponsonby Every note is intentional. Bum notes? These musicians, including the pianist, are masters. A wonderfully exciting sound. Limitless.
