My favourite part of this channel is that it's teaching me things about weapons systems I didn't know much about. For example we've all seen a million videos on the A-10, but I've never seen a video about a relatively tiny member of the Japanese Navy like this.
In the last part of the Cold War, the Italian Navy developed a series of small anti-ship units equipped with great firepower. They were the hydrofoils of the Sparrowhawk P-420 class, six ships as fast as their names indicated: Nibbio P-421, Falcone P-422, Goshawk P-423, Grifone P-424, Kestrel P-425, Condor P-426. Units destined for anti-ship warfare with remarkable firepower for their modest tonnage. Built in the 1980s by the Italian Navy, they represented a military-technical innovation of warfare on the sea. Skipping all traditionally inspired concepts, the Navy chose a truly innovative solution for the hull and engine system, adopting the combat hydrofoil. The prototype was the Sparrowhawk.
Your considered presentation of the reasons for deploying these vessels is much appreciated. I hope that Japan is utilizing its very considerable expertise in advanced robotic subsystems to enhance combat effectiveness. The enhanced speed and agility of these vessels seems to represent an extension of the torpedo boat type. Thank-you for another clear presentation.
Those seem to be great patrol boats and I hope the newer boats are even better at performing their patrol duty as war with China can break out at any time. The Philippines will be glad to get the four boats being taken out of service as they have a problem with China and need ships ASAP.

no. not at all. while i agree that the whole LCS project turned out to be very disappointing, the role the missile boat is supposed to fill is fundamentally different from that of a LCS. while the hayabusa is supposed to fill a monitoring and when opportunity presents itself, sea strike role close to its own shores, LCS is essentially a very expensive multi role fleet support ship. it is supposed to do the things the big ships have a problem doing, while being able to stay with the fleet. buying a missile boat will not work for the US at all because it lacks the range that the USN requires to project power globally, and it fills a role that USN simply does not have. it adds basically nothing to the fleet, and can't even keep up with the fleet due to its limited range.
Art..... Thanks for the lengthy explanation. While I completely understand the intent of the LCS program, it's success has been limited. My comment was mostly meant as sarcasm, but yeah the strike capability of the Hayabusa seems much more capable.
For anyone that doesn't really have an idea of the JMSDF capability think of it like if the USN was a DDG and smaller force. My first ship was the USS Kitty Hawk homeported in Yokosuka Japan. They consider themselves the USN's little brother, the USN considers the JMSDF as thier little brother. A Kongo class DDG can make for a good carrier escort vessel primarily because all of the Japanese self defense forces are DEFENSE forces so all those VLS cells are full of air defense they don't have to set a varying percentage of cells aside for land attack. I'd say they are easily the second best Navy out there.
the Hayabusa class could do with a compact 58 mm main gun instead of the oversized 76 mm . . . surprisingly none of the missile boats are armed with dual-tube 344 mm torpedo launchers . . .
Or “Jeune Ecole, but with the firepower to make it work.” The reason why the IJN moved away from it was due to their experiences in the first Sino-Japanese War, where their far better and more modern fleet of cruisers and torpedo boats had incredible difficulty trying to kill a slightly outdated, poorly-maintained, and poorly-employed Chinese ironclad. They recognized that they would have suffered far heavier losses had the ironclad battleship been vaguely anywhere near effectively employed. Missile boats differ from torpedo boats in that the effective range of their weapons relative to those possessed by the largest warships is much closer, only limited by their sensor capabilities (lower height means shorter radar horizon).
PN should marry the characteristics of the hayabusa class and hamina class with a hull length and capabilities of a Sa'ar 4.5 Speed, agility and fire power in a compact asset
I hope the philippines can have this kind of missile boat even a 4 units of this can boast and detterence and that can patrol in the west Philippine sea with a help from Japan ❤
I don't think that the Hayabusa class missile boats will be replaced by the 3900-ton destroyers. In the first place, the Hayabusa type is a missile boat, while the new 3900-ton Mogami class destroyer is a frigate. The reason why the Mogami class built was to reduce manpower by using advanced system control (because it is difficult to maintain enough manpower for increasing the number of destroyer class ships), and also because it is necessary to operate at sea for longer than missile boats in order to be on alert against territorial sea invasions by China and North Korea.
These little ships can wreck havoc in the Chinese navy. Their speed and maneuverability combined with their anti-ship missiles are an excellent counter to either the Chinese or even Russian fleets. Japan does not need to build gigantic ships. Because it’s an island, it’s difficult to be stormed and occupied by a foreign force and can be protected by these ships, Air Force and missiles, plus the help of Western Countries that see Japan as a trusted allied. Hopefully will never have to use them.
Taiwan has more advanced and heavily armed missile boats. We have 31 equivalents of the Hayabusa-class, the Kuang Hua VI. With similar loadout(4 subsonic ASCM), they have better stealth technique and an RWS double as CIWS. We also have 7 slightly bigger Tuo Chiang class Stealth corvettes. Each can carry 8 supersonic, 4 subsonic ASCM and 16 medium range SAM, plus Phalanx CIWS or RAM style missiles for self defense, guided by AESA radar. 5 more are on the way, and the 12 coast guard versions can also be converted into missile boats as well. Taiwan and Japan have different goals. Taiwan focuses on denying the sea in coordination with CDCM batteries, hence we employ stealthy, fast missile boats. Japan focuses on controlling the sea with large destroyers. Different goals result in different outcomes.
Submarines are huge deterrent if used properly, combined with coastal anti-ship and anti air batteries, these boats would be make a hostile navy think twice in operating the waters where it operate. Currently our MPAC's missiles can't even sink a corvette. Maybe a smaller unarmored boat.
@@Delta-2-0 makes sense but no navy except North Korea has dedicated coastal submarines that has that low of tonnage. I was thinking cheap submersibles that can be converted as mine laying midget subs.
Japan has them too. The latest Taigei sub which launched this year is fully equipped with lithium-ion batteries. Japan did it first in the latest Soryu boats.

PN should marry the characteristics of the hayabusa class and hamina class with a hull length and capabilities of a Sa'ar 4.5
Speed, agility and fire power in a compact asset

I hope the philippines can have this kind of missile boat even a 4 units of this can boast and detterence and that can patrol in the west Philippine sea with a help from Japan ❤
They are all named after small birds of prey...
Modern Bow Cabusa. It has potential for the Samaria marine force. With its new Footmen
🇦🇺👍🏾um I think Australian navy would like a few
RANGE???
COST PER VESSEL???
Bring back Frigates FFG’s
First class useful for thousands lslandwide patrols
It looks like an areiglh Burke got its rear half chopped off
A bit surprised that you don't mention Taiwanese Navy who also heavily utilize missile boats against China.
Poland plans to design 6 high-speed rocket chasers in the future.
"plans" LOL magic word is "kurwa" , plans LOL , sice when any plans of modernization of Polish navy work ? , again lol .
Hayabusa aka ‘peregrine falcon’
Hayabusa-class boots start retiring at the end of 2021, her successor will be 1500 tons-class Corvettes.
Kahit mga missile boat na lang bilhin. Aanohin ba yung submarine? Coast defense lang naman kailangan natin eh.
@@John-rn1nm A2/AD!! Nice.
Diesel electric subs (the swedish ones) along with bots like these ones is a good coastal defence.
Japan has them too. The latest Taigei sub which launched this year is fully equipped with lithium-ion batteries. Japan did it first in the latest Soryu boats.
We'll replace a 200+ tonne corvette with a 3000+ tonne frigate. What could possibly go wrong?
