    For people who didn't want to talk about "What's your process?", this whole interview is a brilliant discussion about How To Act. My favorite Smartless episodes are ALWAYS the ones where the Guest gives us a master class in their skills. It's also a huge testament to the guys that they can get such a reserved guy like Joaquin to open up and chat this easily! GREAT episode!!

      Yea im stunned. Ive never heard the man be normal in an interview. I never disliked him for coming off as a prick sometimes. Perfectly understandable. Didnt think he was such a cool guy when hes not under a spotlight though. A testament to these three guys that they can get anyone and everyone to be themselves.

    Joaquin should have three Oscars. He has one for Joker, but he should have an additional two for his performances on Gladiator and Walk the Line.

    • @gentlesoft6627
      @gentlesoft6627 11 місяців тому +1

      Gladiator? I have to ask again: Gladiator?? If you mean that it would be a fitting ironic comment on the relative uselessness and ineptitude of the 'Academy ' when it comes to recognizing and honoring artistic achievement, then absolutely yes, Gladiator. But if you're being earnest, then you really should see The Master. If you have seen Master, then join all of existence, now and forever after, in disregarding this comment. But that's probably a decision that you've already made for yourself.
      I don't know about Walk the Line; I saw a bit of it on cable years ago. Reese Witherspoon seemed fine in it, although I really admired her in Freeway and Election.
      I think I had more fun with Walk Hard. I like John Reilly in everything from Hard Eight and Boogie Nights to Stepbrothers and Check It Out! and Moonbase 8. And his movie with Diego Luna, and definitely the Little Hours with Molly Shannon, and of course Talladega Nights.
      I was kind of perplexed by comments I heard John Reilly make in an interview while promoting The Sisters Brothers, that movie he did with Joaquin Phoenix. (I'm glad to see Westerns come back any time, and thank Red Dead Redemption 2 for its role in that. RDR2 and The Master have had the strongest affect on me of just about anything I've seen, read, or played recently.) JCR talked about his ability both to take the lead as an alpha in a partnership, as well as to cede that role to the other player if the role and the production called for it. JCR said he loved JP and would take a bullet for him. But at some point JCR described watching JP work like watching a raccoon root through trash. I'm not a good judge of people, and I miss a lot of nonverbal communication and social cues - as might have already seemed pretty likely by this point - but I couldn't tell if JCR was taking a backhanded swipe at JP or not. The comment seemed to have been a response to how well they got along or how they worked together, but you can never tell since an interview can be edited and rearranged in any way.

      Yes to Josh Hartnett, especially b/c he left & recently returned to Hollywood (kinda like Brendan Fraser or Colin Farrell, never fully gone from the movies, but diminished star power). Interesting to hear about his experience filming the adaptation of Jeffrey Eudenides' The Virgin Suicides (such a good book & oddly liked the film too, which is rare). And curious about his experience at SUNY & being expelled - if & how that changed his life trajectory.

      @Kitty8791 yeah The Virgin Suicides was a decent book and movie. I'd love to hear him talk about The Faculty and although I've already watched Lucky Number Slevin with his commentary it'd be nice to hear his thoughts looking back at working with that great cast.

    The Bealtes were the Beat-als (beat- all s) right after being the Silver Beetles, and Johnny and the Moon Dogs. Stu Sutcliff (original bass player) goaded John to switch it to Beatles. It was in reference to the drum beat and the popular beat poets of the late 50s, early 60s. But then, there is that flaming pie story that Lennon made up for the press.

    TIL; "Originally spelled Beatals, punningly referencing the expression beat all (“surpass everything”), then later altered to Beatles, blend of beat +‎ beetles, with beat referring to "beat music" or the "beat" of a drum, and beetles inspired by the contemporaneous band name The Crickets." - Wiktionary
