In the late 50s, one of Brenda Tarpley's best friends at Jr High and at Maplewood High in Nashville was a tall beauty named Rita Coolidge. As it happened, Coolidge married Kris Kristofferson in 1973 and had her own hit records. The couple divorced in 1980 and Kristofferson married his present wife, Lisa Meyers, in 1983.

Yeah, they don't show that one on TV. I think it was 2 or 3 parts like a mini-series and probably too long for a showing on cable or streaming.
@@MostlyBrenda ... It was 4 hours long, but I can’t remember if it was 1 or 2 parts. It was filmed in Hawaii. My brother-in-law was in the U.S. Army then and, if I remember correctly, he played a court reporter in it. Also, the actor Jose Ferrer told him to become a professional extra because you get more money. Probably more extra parts too, I would think. My nephew, his son, is an actor in California. Played an extra in a lot of shows like NCIS: Los Angeles and Desperately Seeking Susan. Been in a lot of movies too. Not sure if he’s gotten any acting gigs where his name is listed though. Haven’t been keeping up with him lately. Haven’t kept up with much of anything of anyone lately. Not felt like it.

The little lady is a power house. I have about 140 of her songs and any time I try to simplify my collections, I can’t find one Brenda Lee piece I can part with. Goodness shines from this gal’s spirit.

I find her 45sand albums in junk shops.....guess she's not putting anymore out. But, I buy all if find...even if I already got the. I just ordered and received a small rca 45s so I can play a bunch without having to change the records.
Kris wrote it for a male, but the song took an unexpected turn when Sammi Smith had a #1 Country hit and top ten pop hit with it. The lyrics were then considered shocking for a female to sing. Many female versions followed and today many people consider the song to be part of the feminist / women's liberation movement of the 70s.
I have learned the truth in this piece is only revealed in the company of the right person. All other attempts fall way short of what is revealed within the parameters of thoughts and feeling exemplified within the boundaries of this piece. truly a beautiful thought and reality of the piece. peace to all who have kept the faith.

He had the good sense to just be a compliment and let her carry the load. He wrote it and some writers would feel like it's their song and they deserve the spotlight, but here he quite happily deferred to her. We are all better for it.

Best part is later when she sings "neee-eed a friend" after 3:10 Kris goes "whew" as a compliment. For some reason your post was marked as spam and I never saw it till today.

IMHO, some try to do this one too fast. It's more difficult to do it slow like this version because the singer(s) have a more difficult time establishing a rhythm for their phrasing. Kris and Brenda do a great job on that score, however. And she throws in some beautiful soaring notes not heard elsewhere.
Brenda seems to hit some great notes in the song that i just don't think sammi Smith could ever hit

Kris ain't got the best singing voice....but every once in a while he hits the notes right. 😂
He gets a little confused around 2:00 about who's turn it is, probably because they are doing the exchanges differently than he did with Rita. It probably helps that Brenda is never off-key and so he can just match her pitch.

Now I think Kris simply forgot who had the next line and whispers something like "next line you?" It makes sense because he does sing the line later in the song. Then he says "That's pretty!" as they cut to the violins. Deleted my old posts on this.

Male & female......that's a difference.
He has a pretty amazing voice for speaking in my opinion, but his ability to stay on pitch while singing has always sounded almost as bad to me as my own. Kinda' sad (for both of us).
