The Florida Intracoastal Waterway, also known as the ICW, is a 1,243-mile-long inland waterway that runs along the east coast of Florida, from Fernandina Beach in the north to Key West in the south. The waterway is a series of interconnected canals, rivers, bays, and sounds that offer a protected route for boaters to travel up and down the coast without facing the hazards of the open sea.
The Florida ICW provides boaters with a safe and sheltered waterway, with plenty of anchorages, marinas, and ports of call along the route. The waterway is maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers, and is marked with navigational aids such as buoys, markers, and lights to help boaters navigate the often-shallow waters.
Along the way, boaters can enjoy a diverse range of scenery, including pristine beaches, saltwater marshes, mangrove swamps, and urban waterfronts. Wildlife such as dolphins, manatees, and a variety of birds can often be spotted along the route.
The Florida ICW is a popular route for boaters, including recreational boaters, commercial vessels, and even cruise ships. The waterway offers easy access to many popular destinations, such as St. Augustine, Palm Beach, Miami, and the Florida Keys, and is also an important transportation route for goods such as fuel, raw materials, and agricultural products.
Overall, the Florida Intracoastal Waterway is a valuable resource for boaters, providing a safe and scenic route along the east coast of Florida.
