    Thanks for that Martin.
As a child, I experienced the end of the steam era, and the beginning of diesels.
I vividly remember always trying to sit at the driving end of the class 101 DMU, just to watch how the driver operated the train.
Fast forward to about 2005, I'm working at an office on Blackfriars St, Manchester. My journey to work was from Bolton to Salford Central.
One evening, on my journey home, whilst waiting at Salford Central for a dreadful journey home on a Sprinter 'nodding dog', I was in for a treat...
The train that turned-up comprised two class 31 loco's, with four 1950 vintage carriages in between. I still remember that the loco's had names - Cerberus and Minotaur. They made a glorious sound.
The treat lasted for about six weeks, until we were, once again, dumped on to the sprinters.
I have no idea why this all happened, but grateful for the experience.

I used to ride to school in a class 101, and like you I sat at the front and watched the driver. A few years ago I got to drive one, which was a thrill. I think you meant to say Pacer rather than Sprinter when you were referring to a "nodding dog".

In 1967, when was seven years old, my father took me and my sister down to the railroad tracks to see the "Flying Scotsman" as it made a tour of the United States. He took an amazing series of photos as the the steam train passed by, including shots of me and my little sister watching it go by. I recently discovered them in an old album. Great memories. Thank you Martin. :)

Opening and closing with some of the best music ever composed, period. So that alone is worth a like!
See, steam has its place; not just for kettles and curling tongs. Chalk up another convert, Martha.
Truth be told, I find this mainline stuff a bit sterile these days, but I can't turn back the clock. I had a very small bit of steam footplate malarky and it stayed with me and will not go away, but, I do miss real working steam, in its everyday clothes, grime and oil and industrial habitiat.
At least Tornado proves we can still do it, albeit with modern materials, alterations due to H&S, and the boiler made in Germany (pity about that), can't we make other things as well? Apparently not. Rant over!
Good to see you clearly had a good time, and caught the spirit of things which may now stay with you too. And the good ol' duff, with wheel flats an'all- who'd a thunk it years ago how well loved they would become in the future, having been 'bowled' yet again when out fishing for the big stuff like Deltics or hydraulics. Time marches on.
Thanks for doing this one mate, I did my driving training between Vic and Blackpool, and they were golden days indeed, if I but knew it then. This stirred the memories for me. Cheers, Martin.

My husband learned to read only after leaving school when he was a young fireman sitting on the footplate of a steam engine waiting in sidings or stations. The first book he ever read was "Red For Danger" by L.T.C. Rolt. He remembers reading about engine boilers exploding because the fireman screwed the safety valve down for more pressure not realizing the gauge was on it's 2nd time round when it blew. He'd nervously look up from reading and see steam escaping from the boiler wash out plugs!! Gruesome but absolutely fabulous book, beautifully written and gripping.

Another one of your clips that can't be beat. Thank you. 50+ years ago, my first job out of school, I had the run of one of NSW Govt. Railway workshops. I've seen diesels stripped down to the last component, and put back together beneath the shell. Ever since I rode a steam hauled suburban Sydney train in the '50s, steam has always seduced me because much of the workings are out there for all to see. It looked like you could do it yourself with no more training than a childhood of Meccano. My awareness the skill, expertise and precision of steam machinery creation was yet to come. Every steam loco has it's own soul.......

In my home town they had a steam locomotive that was on display for years, called "The 400". It was famed for traveling 400 miles in 400 minutes (Chicago to Minneapolis...yes in 'Merica). Then a local club spent years rebuilding it, and when they were done, they leased to be used for tours. And it was crashed pretty much right away. It was a complete loss. So yeah, enjoy them while we got them; nothing lasts forever!

I am unfortunately old enough to remember steam trains in the early to mid 60's as a child and lived near West Jesmond Station in Newcastle, and would run up to the bridge to get the steam and smoke in your face..... nothing like the smell of the mixture of steam and smoke.. You should go to Haworth in Yorkshire for the Keighley and Worth Valley steam railway it s where they filmed the 1970s The Railway Children and have steam trains also Diesel as well ;-)

Incredible that basically a coal or oil fired boiler on wheels can go a 100 + miles per hour! I worked on a historical steam railroad in New Brunswick, Canada. We had a running steam engine from 1899, #42. She was a living breathing entity and i got to help fire her up many times an actually got to drive her a couple of times! Ironically she now sits in a museum just 10 miles away from me in Nova Scotia! Laughed at the red faces! But the train looked amazing leaving with the red light and steam! Great episode Martin!

Great one, Martin. The difference between a Diesel and a Steam locomotive, is that a steam engine can be summed up in the words of one Doctor Frankenstein: "It's alive!" So many variables in getting one to work at it's best, it's very much like a body - it has to be at the right temperature and pressure; has to have plenty of water; the right coal that burns at a constant rate. The Tornado is a beautiful machine - I saw pictures of it, in about 2009, running on the beautiful bit of line that runs through Devon and Cornwall - a good portion of which is along the sea wall, cliffs one side, sea the other. I didn't recognise it, and looked it up, and was blown away when I found out it was a new 'old' engine. My brother and his little lad saw it a few years back when it ran on the line not far from my house - they stood on the bridge near my old school. That day, alas, I was working nights, and fast asleep as it thundered by.

Loved this to bits!!! Tornado was the engine that rekindled my interest in British steam. I bought it in model form in OO scale and it has subsequently lead to a collection of well over 30 British steam locomotives (in OO scale) with more being ordered every month or so.
I too enjoyed the sound of the Class 47 (and Class 37 too) but I'm not so much a Deltic fan. Being Australian most of our diesel locos were either GM/EMD or Alco powered, both f which feature on my channel along with a growing selection of British steam on preserved lines.
Oh, and can we Aussies borrow Tornado for a while? We'll send it back - eventually, just like we did Flying Scotsman in 1989!!!

I've been a steam enthusiast ever since I saw a steam locomotive in action, they are fantastic. A Diesel is much more efficient and easier to maintain, but there isn't the same romance. The sound and smell of a steamer is epic!

I remember travelling from Manchester to London by steam train when I was a kid. The engines were magnificent beasts, the noise, the drama - but what I remember most is the smell of hot grease and coal smoke. Diesels just aren't the same....

Steam engines is the bees knees. Lovely to see you discover it. :-)
We usually go on a small steam train to Mariefred every summer, and go back with a steam boat. It's a really nice day trip.

I absolutely loved this. Just a few minutes down the road but I missed it. Saw Nodrog's take on it and loved his vlog but you got great footage and Barry of course and the obvious delight you had at seeing this was a pleasure to watch. The Foxes got Tornado going over the Marple Viaduct with the drone up... (episode 71) isn't it wonderful that UA-cam can link it all together to let us relish these things :D And your music choice was inspired - Thank you :)

British power of steam....having sat here and watched that locomotive pull away on my 50 inch smart tv was enjoyably goose pimply. Another good video Martin and yes nothing beats watching, tasting and smelling steam power in the real. I'll now have to get back up to Churnet Valley railway now and watch steam locos in the real.

Now you have had a taste of what you have been missing Martin! Steam beats diesels every time!Couldn't see anything interesting about the tin boxes I'm afraid, was on the support crew 6201 Princess Elizabeth in the 1980s,and being able to ride on the footplate of a beautiful Princess Royal at speed was truly an experience I will never forget! You should go and see some real locos, and forget the diesels! You won't regret it,believe me, incidently, they are building a new Patriot 4.6.0.The Unknown Warrior 45551,looking forward to seeing the engine soon!

She was doing tours between Edinburgh and Aberdeen a few months ago and having seen her steaming up the East Coast line I was impressed with how "quiet" she is when running. I didn't get as close as you though so a bit envious.

I wonder if the poor buggers who drove these back in the day hold them in such fond memories. Having to get there hours before hand to fire them up.. cold and deafening cabs.. diesel seems like the sweeter option to me although not as atmospheric..

Great stuff Martin. When I was a kid and a train spotter, a diesel was a novelty which we where not really interested in, they had no sole!!! We where Steamers only and I probably rode on one of the very last steam trains in service. The York Railway meuseum is a must vist.

Great video Martin and Nodrog too, it's like the crossover they used to do in comics you know when Superman suddenly met Batman !!!! You guys are superheroes, glad you like steamers now, the idea is to build modern steam trains based on old designs that didn't get preserved and can also keep up with modern trains on the mainline. In my childhood these locos were everywhere now there's only a few on the mainline,so they are very special, take care mate cheers
