I stumbled upon a Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold video a few years back, so every now and then I get random climbing videos in my feed which is how I stumbled across your channel. I don't climb, and haven't competed in any sport since high school, but these beta break videos are so fascinating. Your explanation of the techniques and movements really convey the difficulty, and this series is so fascinating and well produced I've binged all of them. Love the videos man, keep it up!
You must try..........I broke my right clavicle 3yrs ago I was in a sling fir my 40th birthday, thinking to myself how long it would take to get strong (if ever).A friend mentioned bouldering (indoor) to me,I thought it would be good for a bit physio, six months after the “break” I tried for the first time. It’s now 2 and a half years later and I haven’t stopped,I’ve got to a decent level now and I’m stronger and tighter than I was in my thirties.............also moved from Scotland (Edinburgh ) to Mallorca to climb all year.YEEHA!✌🏻👍🏻🧗♂️🧗🏻♂️
Just wanted to comment and say that I really appreciate the effort you put in these videos. I want to hopefully speak for myself and hopefully some of your viewers and say the effort you put in really does show and shows how much you care about your channel. Thanks again for the content
Yes, so coaches( or climbers) can appeal a boulder is illegal since it requires a downwards dyno. Therefor not counting to the end result of the competition.
Why do I love this channel? Because he gives context, history everything on the topic to show importance of beta break. I don't have to look anywhere else.
THANK YOU for actually showing the full attempt on the problem when you focus on it, it’s so much more pleasant than only getting to see a tiny clip that cuts off before i see the next move
I'm a new climber but I love watching these difficult problems solved by beta breakers and creative climbers because it motivates me to keep trying and keep at it. If there's a will there's a way.
I was just gonna say "I really appreciate the research and effort put into these videos and that they're great to watch." but I think other people have already said it. Still, can't hurt to hear it a few times. Great job, man!
@@letsprogress4124 it's an up and back motion that used to do it for me before having it pinned. Name the activity and there's a fair chance I popped a shoulder (funniest was going down on my girlfriend on new year's). I wouldn't and couldn't do this
Wowsers, just stumbled on your videos by accident. haha! i used to do climbing as a teenager as part of a scheme with my secondary school and loved it so much. i never went back though so these videos brought back a lot of memories. thanks!
Its hard not being able to go to a climbing gym and practice because of this virus going around but these videos help keep me into climbing and are just plain awesome! Seeing some of the best climbers in the world do things that I never thought was possible on a climbing wall reestablishes my love for climbing. Keep doing what your doing and thanks for this amazing series!
During lockdown I've been re-watching the IFSC worlcup finals and this one (Meringen 2018) is by far the most exciting one for men 🤩. Boulder n°2 was also amazing!
I like watching these videos, they're edited well and incredibly highlights the Beta breaks. But personally I feel exhausted watching them climb I just feel weird my shoulders start to stiffen as if I'm the one hanging lmao.
2:48 seems like height is required to perform the flying heel hook that Jernej did. That seems to be the main reason why most people tried what they did, they didn't have the length to hook. I don't have a clue about rock climbing whatsoever, but his lengthy limbs seems to allow for the ability to perform some of these moves. Still a lot of respect though for creativity. I get exhausted just watching these climbers climb sheesh.
I always wonder how athletes from old times would feel, seeing our modern champions, in all kinds of sports. (and goes for today's champs, facing athletes from 50+ years from now in the future) Climbing, boxing, swimming, whatever : the bar just feel like raising more and more through the years.
For a moment I thought by flying heel hook you were talking about a Heel Hook leg lock xD That'd be literally the fastest way to accidentally tear someones shins in half
I went and watched the video... It did not count as a fall, he got another go (didn't place high enough to go to the next round, though). The setters just went back up and screwed the hold back in. Jernej had an 11-minute rest before his 2nd run, as the rules specify 1 minute of rest per hold in in the case of a technical incident, and he had climbed 11 holds so far.
so ivfe watched like 6 of your videos and love them all but I still cant figure out what a ''beta break'' actually is? is it like a climber changing the meta?
Kind of! Beta refers to: Beta is climbing jargon that designates information about a climb.[1][2] The complexity of beta can range from a small hint about a difficult section to a step-by-step instruction of the entire climb.[1][3] In rock climbing this may include information about a climb's difficulty, crux, style, length, quality of rock, ease to protect, required equipment, and specific information about hand or foot holds. For mountaineering, beta may include information about the length and difficulty of the approach, availability of water on the climb and the approach, ease of exiting the route before completing it, descent information, perhaps even useful logistic information for climbs in foreign countries.[citation needed] Sometimes a beta is also drawn, in the form of a beta-map.[4][5] Basically these climbers are finding a way to do the climbs in a very different way!
Great video as always! Just one thing keeps irritating me. It comes across a bit condescending to me when you start the video with "I am *of course* talking about..." Most people probably don't even notice, though ^^
I thought flying heel hook meant he was gonna catch himself with a heel. 😂
Same

It's almost 1am and you're about to make me cry with this comment.
Albert Ok you deserve this praise! Dawsoin said it right and I couldn’t say it any better myself.
Exactly, it is rare something on UA-cam holds my attention as much as these videos do they are fascinating and I am excited for more!
The downward dyno wasn’t against the rules anyway because that rule is for the routesetters. :)
Haha ;D
Yes, so coaches( or climbers) can appeal a boulder is illegal since it requires a downwards dyno. Therefor not counting to the end result of the competition.
xTransmission but it doesn’t require one, because it was climbed other ways also
Did you guys even watch the video? He goes over this exact thing.
The rule is against it being the intended beta. The climbers can do whatever they want when they are in the wall.
I think my shoulders will crack open if I do a downward dyno 😆😆. Awesome videos as always!
LOL I definitely wouldnt train downwards Dynos with you if we got to climb together again haha
Don’t let your weight drop to your shoulders then.
I actually cracked my shoulder watching this 🤣
This series is really good. I'm not even into climbing and I watched all of them.
agreed- good edit and a well written narrative. Keep em coming
SAME. He’s so good at telling the story of climbers through a unique lens
You guys should all try out climbing!! It’s so much harder than it looks, but it’s so incredibly fun and satisfying
The unintended downward dyno joke at the end cracked me up hahahahaha
i have never watched climbing before so naturally because of the youtube algorithm i will watch all your videos
Heck yes! Bless you!
Ouch, that last clip was brutal! Great video as always!
These beta breaks give me so much knowledge on how to climb. The techniques you analyze, they’re amazing. Thanks

Keep crushing dude😂
I’m a simple man - I see a beta break video and I click
I just love that final clip, how his excite and joy is contagious to his competitors.

I hope my gym eventually puts a route up that has a flying heel hook! That looks heaps cool!
Your videos are so well put together! Really entertaining and high quality too. I’m always left inspired by the cool climbers you talk about too!
As a Slovenian I knew we had some amazing climbers and I'm really happy that they are often mentioned in videos like these!
these beta break videos are fantastic. some of my favorite climbing vids

I know it's not a beta break but my favourite bit of climbing is when he did the mental triple dyno in the legends only a couple of years ago
As a BJJ practitioner this is not the flying heel hook I was looking for but I am not disappointed

Yes. We love Jernej!
I’ll definitely try this sport after the pandemic.
I'm curious. What happened when the piece broke off of the lead route? Did he get a retry or does it count against him?
I enjoy your videos a whole lot, thank you!
aw, that ending was so cute! xD
Yay a new video!!
a flying heel hook?!?!!? what a mad man!
impressive man
damn bro, homies hands must be CRYING for help with that downward dyno
Whatever he did before the downwards dyno was almost more fascinating. How did he sort out his body there?
Rofl, that last clip killed me
Now i want to climb even more. And climbing gyms are still closed in Poland. crap
I miss bouldering so much.
6:20 that move scares me
For a moment I thought by flying heel hook you were talking about a Heel Hook leg lock xD

Dude i love your videos!
plz make more beta breaks!!

That last downward dyno is how you get hurt. Be careful with those :)
Did you really have to end a nice video like that with a clip that will haunt my nightmares?
Nice videos, but you should consider using an de-esser on your mic audio.
Still waiting for the tomoa video
Saving it for a special day :)

Oh this channel is going to be a rabbit hole... but at least I know how to get out at the end.
So breaking a hold counts as fall? And is the mistake then climbers or builders?
