you're holding the nail clippers wrong, you hand should be at the back not at the blade end they are built with a spring I also wouldn't use the clippers as they could shatter the shell use a coarse emery board

Yes we use bleach here in Australia to clean our shells and it’s the same bleach you use to whiten clothes.
