This was geared to everything she did wrong as opposed to how wonderfully talented she is. Doesn’t account for the fact that she is probably doing this performance early in the morning after an 8 show week. I’m sure she has had great training which is why she’s a force on Broadway.

These are very odd critiques for musical theatre. The frozen hands are because the character is paralyzed in that moment, until the end when she’s made her decision. Very tall rounded vowels would be a bit odd in a song like this that’s supposed to sound almost spoken. (Betty Buckley famously sang Memory with an even wider mouth shape than Joy has here.) Agree about the lower breath, but a very deep breath would not make sense for a song like this with very short phrases that need little air. It does come off as rather disrespectful to Joy because there seems to be no background knowledge of the moment she’s in in the story or the style she’s singing in.

What are we doing here? lol Just saw the Notebook last week on my first ever trip to NY and hearing/seeing Joy Woods perform this song was worth the price of admission alone. She's a powerhouse and micro breaking down this clip with only critiques seems unnecessary

would appreciate if when doing these anyalsis type videos, you pointed out the equally positive things the singers are doing. otherwise it tends to read as criticism piece instead of a critiqued one. just for future, it also allows the viewer to really understand what made them originally moved by the performance not feel as though they were wrong in their feelings because theres now “ so much wrong “ with the performance. thank you 😊

just something i picked up with all due respect, for example you pointed out a lot of things she did wrong which are valid and we can learn from. but maybe some she did right, and explain how we can achieve or go about replicating that to cause im sure there are some otherwise she wouldn’t be where she is right now. thank you

Let's hear you do this song. When singing theater technique has to be balanced with telling the story, she isn't a robot. There is a reason so many have had a strong reaction to her performance: She is an amazing actor and singer.

This commentary is really unfortunate on so many levels, and frankly incorrect. Your post has been specifically cited as part of a conversation amongst many of us who actually coach and work with B'way level singers navigating the discipline, technique and challenges of a grueling show schedule and delivering show-stopping vocals every performance. I saw Joy in the show tonight (#7 of her 8 show week) because she is heading out soon to do Gypsy and the performance was impeccable and thrilling-as good as the cast recording. It might be more helpful and credible for you to demonstrate your own vocal technique and show how you would do it better, rather than critiquing a Broadway star to get clicks using their name and the Broadway show title for SEO. Just a thought. Maybe even delete this post altogether.

Ok ive never seen any of your reaction videos and probably won't watch any more from you tbh... She's portraying a character why she may look like that on stage to you firstly and secondly her vocals were top notch 👌🏼 amazing if i may say so myself.. Sorry but that's 👎🏽👎🏽 for you and your reaction..

Looks like a lot of folks were strangely offended by this critique, but it was actually very complimentary. I've heard that professional chess players, even if they win, go back and analyze their performance. It shouldn't seem devastating to have someone provide ways to improve, especially with so much professional experience. While the performance was great, there is always something Joy can learn from an objective critique. Otherwise, why keep singing? Don't we all want to improve our game?

This was an incredible performance but you'd never know it based on your comments. The technical comments are great, but it could have been way more balanced.

Hi Jennifer, my name is Mike Ruckles and I’m a private voice teacher in NYC where I work with Joy Woods. I can’t say I’m a fan of these “vocal coach reacts” videos to begin with. You are using an artist’s work and their fame (without their permission) to make it about you and your business goals. Can I recommend that you only post and comment on the work of your own clients? It would be enlightening to hear your perspective on the work you’ve done with your students whose voices and backgrounds you actually know. My best to you.

I would also just add that, while an abdominal breath is the default/optimal breath 90% of the time in CCM singing, there are qualities/coordinations in which a deep abdominal breath would be problematic, even potentially injurious. Breath (quality and quantity) should be commensurate to the task at hand.

I think your critiques would matter if she sounded bad.

This is such an intriguing analysis, and super educational on good technique! The singer in the video obviously has some serious talent, but I agree with the the commentary, perhaps it was an off day for the singer but there was definitely some technique changes that could’ve enhanced the performance like this video talks about. Great analysis!

I love the emphasis on the deep breaths! It's a concept that, as soon as I grasped it, changed the way I was able to sustain my voice and replicate the sounds I was hearing. Love these kinds of videos!

Wow, maybe the Notebook producers should know that Joy is doing EVERYTHING wrong! BEAUTIFUL TEETH. Did you really just say that?

I feel like there wasn’t enough emphasis on the incredible talent she has, it felt like a lot of the break down was on the things to work on rather than any positives, would love to hear more of that please xx
