    "He's been in my home", translates to, "he's been around my children". What a horrifying thing to realize, that this man, whom you consider a friend, is the *worst* kind of monster. Worse yet? He's been around *your* kids. I can't even imagine.

    Matt Millen has nothing to apologize for. I've always respected him as a broadcaster, and now I respect him even more. His heart was truly broken for Sandusky's victims, and also for the damage done to coach Paterno and the Penn St program. He was honest, emotional, and truly horrified by the whole situation.

    Matt Millen was obviously sickened and shocked by what Jerry Sandusky did. He was emotional. But his point was that even though it was an emotional issue, even for him, those emotions should not drive people to make other decisions. It was like when he said that part of him wanted to "take care of it" himself...he stepped back and said that doing so would be the wrong thing. Divorcing yourself of emotions when making decisions doesn't mean you can't have emotions. You just need to TEMPORARILY put those emotions aside and be rational.

    Can't believe it's been almost 10 years since this news first broke. I remember being out to eat somewhere in my hometown when the news broke and then going home & listening to the initial reports on ESPN & I was just in complete shock. I was at the last game Paterno coached (the snow game against Illinois) & even then I never saw this coming. I also was there when he won his 400th game. And in an instant. it seemed that none of it mattered anymore. I'm a VA Tech Hokies fan in an entire household of Penn State fans, so this was a notable, sad event for us as a CFB loving family.

      Same too. I remember it well. I was my freshman year in high school and I could remember watching Dancing With the Stars with the family and I overheard my mom and older brother talking about an assistant coach at Penn State raping boys and I was like: “This can’t be Penn State?” And sure enough it was. The next when I was in intervention class with my brother and he was talking about it with the teacher who so happened to be my football coach and I talked about it with him and I said I thought it was a bunch of BS and the NCAA is like: “Now that we already bullied Ohio State long enough, who’s next on the list so that we can give Michigan a fighting chance at a national title let alone a Big 10 conference title?” Coach gave that are you kidding look and said “Do you know what that guy did? He should be shot” I didn’t know about the scandal well enough back then and looking back I feel very stupid for saying those remarks. And ever since the scandal, I’ve hated Penn State and every single thing about them to the core. Go Bucks

    I don't think Paterno was a monster or supported child sexual assault... but I cannot make an argument where he's not to blame in some way for enabling it to continue or not doing something to stop it. And it really is sad that many people in my state only want to argue about how Paterno is the victim here and shouldn't lose his god status when there is a list of abused kids who really are victims. Whatever we do, don't tear down a football deity by holding him accountable for his decisions or lack of action! He built a library!
    God status revoked, he's mortal.

      @@Kevin-it4fh I think its one of those things where he probably did not want to believe it. Sandusky was a long time friend, etc. I know that I have at first rejected to believe certain things that seemed too impossible to be true before I finally accepted them. The difference is, the stuff that I had a hard time accepting was not on the level of child rape by a person that I was enabling, and secondly, I eventually accepted the truth. If one of my assistants reported what was reported to Paterno... "Well, I mentioned it once to somebody in charge and nothing came of it, so I did my part, now I'm just going to pretend it never happened" would not be good enough for me to absolve myself. It's a character test. At the end of the day, Joe Paterno is who had to live with this. I don't have to judge him, he judged himself. It obviously crushed him when the story broke. He probably wondered how football became so important that it wound up preventing him from doing the right thing. I doubt Joe Paterno would be okay with a statue honoring himself in light of what happened.

    Sandusky is one hell of a manipulator. That man concealed his actions for years while being heavily involved with major organizations made up of thousands of people. I always see people talking online about Paterno like he was involved with Sandusky's actions... Paterno heard from McQueary about something he saw in the showers. He should have said to McQueary, "what did you do to stop the incident?" Maybe Paterno could be criticized for that, but the eyewitness is the most accountable here.

Penn State is more than a University. It is a lifestyle (and before all you immature people begin saying, "yeah, a pedophile lifestyle", try acting your age for once and liste). Penn State is a community. Once a Nittany Lion, more than a Nittany Lion. This is why Millen is upset, and why he cries. It is sad for alumni and all.

    You have to grow up in a nation of a football team and the pride of those programs to understand this. Joe Paterno was a an icon in college football and this program was so great but this kills all of that. I grew up in Nebraska and if Osborne or Devaney was involved in something like this it would be devastating. That being said the issues of Penn State were sick and God only knows how wide this was. Those behind that whole issue should be punished to the extent of the law and pray to God that he forgives them for they have a special place waiting if the word is true.

    I’m a Ohio State fan I have no issue with Matt Millen a very passionate man. Listen Joe was naive. He did tell his boss but should have done more. It upsets me that people treat Joe worse then the School President, The AD, Mike McQuary or Jerry Sandusky. The President & AD knew something happened. Worse McQuary walked in on a incident. Get the guy off the kid & scream for help so people come running, don’t give me I had to talk to my father about what to do. Now the big thing that few people understand Joe Pa wasn’t friendly when Sandusky they just worked on the same staff the misconception is they were friends no they weren’t ask anyone around that school.
    Joe was the Head Coach he ran practices but Sandusky ran the defense & the meetings of that unit. If you know football the offense & defense watch separate film in separate rooms I guarantee you when Sandusky was running the defensive meetings Joe wasn’t there & would appear probably stick his head in the door saying “Coach game plan for the game going ok????”
    This idea that Joe & Sandusky were such good friends & that was part of the cover up is ridiculous.

And for Matt Millen to not enough tread carefully enough to recognize that at the end of the day, sports and other non essential life matters play zero importance towards relinquishing the trauma and impact that Sandusky laid onto his victims, and those people, above all else deserve justice and recognition. Because they didn't fire sandusky, paterno, a man in his seventies, thinks an investigation was conducted, and therefore assumes it was nothing and kept sandusky around. Of course Paterno could've gone to the police, but he thought campus officials would do that if something had happened. He wasn't GOD like everyone thought. He was just a popular and massively influential coach. He did what he thought he should do. In retrospect, of course he could've done more. But he is not the evil here. That is Sandusky.

OH AND IF THE SECOND MILE KNEW ABOUT THE disorder Sandusky has. HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN HIRED IN SECOND MILE AND HE WOULD HAVE NEVER MET ANY OF THE KIDS!

    Gary Schultz was the head of Penn State Police. Paterno did think he was doing enough at the time by reporting up the chain, which is what he was supposed to do.
    When nothing happened... MAYBE then he should have acted further--but I think the real burden was in his superior's hands. He was a figurehead, a face for Penn State, but in the end his colleagues likely thought the same about him-- in essence, a overly proud, dottering old fool.

Just getting used to the big 12 deal. I don't even remembe when Big 12 was switched into by NU!

When you are being picky, please grammar check

    I feel bad for victim one b/c of how his family treated him, and his dad was never there, that is why he was happy, he was getting presents, when Jerry stopped getting him gifts and mom money they told police the rape story and his mom started bragging. THAT IS SICK. I hope one day that gets out and his mom goes to jail. JERRY WAS GUILTY SO IT IS FINE HE IS BEHIND BARS SO IT IS WAY BETTER NOW. I feel bad for all the other victims and I hate that he did that to those poor kids.

    @metalrules16 Husker fan here but all you have to do to imagine Millen's emotions base is to imagine being in your 40's and watching a 70 something coach be accused of such things 15 years ago. and before you go and say "I can imagine if my coach would be accused of such things I would be done with him instantaneously" I ask you "Which coach/teacher would you be willing to watch be accused of such thing?" Like an actual coach or teacher not like someone else's on tv?

Very wierd to watch all this come out right as I am starting to be aware of PSU.

    felt alot of hate knowing that a person passed themselves off as a leader and is now living in a yuck way (or has been) I totally get what you are saying about thinking that it is tacky at best if JP was at fault to have him back but just think about what it would be like to feel those feelings towards a high school teacher when you were that age or if you are still that age currently. Can't be fun to feel yuck towards someone you called a friend.

  • @AnneLiesveld
    @AnneLiesveld 12 років тому

    True. I agree with you about that. What bugs me most isn't that every senior now had a horrid year it is that they are doing (like all college students on campus' everywhere doing good things and of course media makes no attention there and then this happens and non-stop attention and while I agree with that I think about how many things that school is known for that get zero media and they will forever be known for that. Jokes aren't funny!! AT ALL.

    Instead of wasting valuable time with these jealous haters we should ban together and ask the county to properly honor Joe with a special rememberance day. That would be fitting since he had done so much good for the students who attended Penn State. Always remember Joseph Paterno and his family.

  • @AnneLiesveld

    @granolanutpunch Everyone talks about this campus coach was his family as though it is so surprising. JP and JS were family because MM connected with them. That is as deep as caring about your high school english or math teacher. I have people I worked with for 1-3 years and I care alot about them. I count it a priviledge to be able to to this day have a connection to a high school music teacher through church. that is the closest I have to a long term connection of a coach.

  • @AnneLiesveld

    @AnneLiesveld in the street or however he put it. I believe he said his viscereal reaction (I believe visceral means GUT reaction) is to disassemble JS and not put him back together ala humpty dumpty I was like OMG. that is the most anger I have seen from PSU towards JS. I am guessing it is somehow easier for MM age bracket to be that way as they have more of a sepration than current students do. They connect so much (I believe) with JS that I bet it is hard to see him as evil.

    That is what I am talking about. People say sports isn't important but there are so many layers to this that have nothing to do with sports-that is what I have always said. I have no doubt he has anger towards JS though. When He said right on camera he wanted to take it out

    I think it's just as sad that law officials swept the first occurrence under the rug yet everyone had no problem picking on an 85 year old man who probably had a bigger positive impact on the world in one year than most of us could hope to have in a lifetime. If you've never been to State College/University Park to see even a tiny bit of impact that this man has had on the immediate community there you should shut it. He lived to a higher moral standard than most of us could ever hope to.

This interview shows the hard of a 48ish year old man feeling like his entire "grade" of school respected him. I mean, Bawstin I see you putting that you saw this guy as a "God" but I imagine all it would take is for someone like Matt to know that he respected his former "boss." I would imagine that it is alot less than a God level or I have a "god" like respect for former

  • @AnneLiesveld
    @AnneLiesveld 12 років тому

    @lolee101 He probably isn't as much confused as when I hear him talking about wanting to talk about obliterating JS it is also about talking about how much He respected him in the past. @granolanutpunch It probably was very similar to family. When you figure he was first around with them in 76 that is alot of years of friendship. and talk about trying to figure out the emotions. I hear support of a coach in the riots on campus but I also see MM having an attitude about JS but even while saying that he admits he felt less than good about JS but even while saying that he sometimes admit the emotions get the best of him or however he put it--shockingly they do
