Cleaning/purging toys is the bane of my existence! Also, I'm glad you call figures "guys" too 😂
I plan on going through toys when my kids go to Grandma's for the summer. Because I'm the mom that doesn't mind doing it without my kids lol

I stumbled across your video and OMG I have FINALLY found someone that speaks my language! Thank you for allowing us to actually walk through the process with you rather than just showing us clips and recapping the clean up. We are like the same person! I have such a hard time with my kids' toys too because they're toys! They're fun and I get sentimental about them. I also loved the way you kept talking to yourself and motivating yourself..."less is more", "be part of the solution", haha! I do that too. Loved your video!

Our home was so overwhelmed with toys so in December before Christmas I purged big time and I've done it once a month since. I have 6 kids so we accumulate a lot quickly.

Yes, I do it on a very regular basis! It helps my kids learn the process better than if they only do it once per year. They know they need to play with it or it goes.

I have highly decluttered my kids toys over the last year and I still look at toys thinking we can declutter more. Even my kids tell me we can declutter more toys now!! Time really shows how successful this work is and how rewarding.

Toy rotation does work! I remember once my mother cleaned my room & put a bunch of toys in a box & and put in a spare bedroom that was used for storage. I never missed any of the toys. But I went up there once with her & discovered the box & thought I a box of treasures! Everyday I would go back & bring down 1 "new" toy & play with it! 😁

Kid stuff can be so hard! I have 9 year old twin girls and I started decluttering their toys and clothes with them when they were about 5 years old. It was so difficult for my one daughter when we started the process, but both of them are “pros” at it now. We go through clothes 3 or 4 times a year and toys about 2 times a year. I’m so proud of how they are able to make good choices now and let go of things that they don’t use/need so that other kids can enjoy/use them.

Great video you did amazingly. You are such a warm and lovely person, I feel like I've come round for coffee and your talking to me!! I love the fact you love the retro stuff too and you're not one of these perfectionist , clinical looking, everything is white and matching. You are a real person that actually lives with stuff in a home like the rest of us. ❤

It seems like in today's world kids don't have to be creative... everything is so electronic. It's nice to still see parents have toys that makes kids use their brain on creativity. Great job mom!! You are a great example of showing respect fir your kids... my boys are older so they help declutter their stuff. Great job 👍❤

You are just a GREAT MOTHER, who values you children's childhoods.
I have always had the very hardest time to decluter TOYS too. Now my children are 29 to 12 years old. They definitely appreciate that, with time they did their own declutering. I have a Declutering Princess and a Clutter Diva. My Diva is between childhood and becoming a Young Lady so with time, I won't have too many toys anymore.

We downsized/decluttered our kids toys about 2 years ago, getting rid of about 2/3 of them. My boys are 4, 8 and 11 years old. It was honestly the best thing we ever did. We keep some basic construction components out permanently, and then 3 small toy/game rotations that we switch out every 6 weeks or so. My younger 2 play with the toys so much more, and it is so quick and easy to tidy up at the end of each day. It was an absolute game changer for our home.

It really is so nice to see others struggle with these items because I have a hard time with some of my kids toys too! I think about how some items were gifts from friends and family, or like you experienced the item is just junk but the kids still enjoy playing with it… it’s hard making these decisions! I do notice every time I declutter they are able to be more creative and enjoy their space more so it’s hard but it’s worth it! Ok now time for me to let go of the guilt and go through my kids toys!

The toys they don’t play with will bless other children. ❤️❤️ Great motivator! That’s why I am having a hard time with it with my kids. My parents got rid of stuff I wasn’t done with and as an adult re-bought things for nostalgia, and I don’t want my kids to hate me for getting rid of stuff they don’t use anymore. It’s always the “what if they ask about this?” It’s so damn hard to get right in and pack stuff to donate.

It does suddenly end! Then you wish they'd play with them again. Ahh happy days 😍 My top tip rotate your toys if you have a shed , attic or other storage space. Pop a few big boxes full away and then you can rotate and they come out like new and get played with a lot but you aren't having toooo many out at once. ❤️
Absolutely agree fewer and organised toys and craft stuff for us now get used much more. It's overwhelm for them I guess. 💗 We had our Lego sorted into mini drawers by colour on a table they played with it so much but it was a headache to put away now it's 3 large drawers. Trying to find a happy medium 😁😁

I love your videos! I’m so glad I found you a few days ago. I’ve been binging all your old videos and you are such an inspiration! Toys are so hard, for me it’s particularly because of the memories I have of my son playing with them. I’ve had him help me before and he is willing to get rid of so much more than I would have thought. Some of the stuff makes me sad to see it go but it’s much better in the end because everything is clean and he has more room to play with the stuff he actually kept. 🥰

My mother has always told me I have way too many toys for my boys (age 2&7, so different toy stages), and I go through the same mental barriers as you when I attempt to declutter!. She was at my house yesterday and I asked her to declutter them. The conclusion after a small pile in the middle of the room. “You really don’t have much here, their toys are so different from each other. It looks like a lot, but you only have like one toy per bin.” So much mental relief! Hahaha

Yes, enjoy the toys while you can!!! My last 2 (of 5) at home are past the toy stage…it’s fun to see your children grow & mature & become independent-it’s what we raise them to do-but it’s a bit sad too!!
My craft room/office is my big project…it’s hard to sort what you love…but it must be done!!! We got this! One thing/area at a time!!!:)

My daughter-in-law and I went through the toy box at my home after Easter dinner. The girls do not play with any of them. They bring their electronics when they come to the house. The little one rarely comes out. I had DIL sort through and take anything home with her that she thought our grandson would like. No pressures. I have a small box left. A few item are good enough to give away or donate. The rest will be trashed. I now have a blanket/afghan box in my living room.

Fun to watch and remember having this same struggle. My son is 34 so no more toys in my house as he is not planning on having children. I hated toys with small pieces -legos and puzzles and tiny toy soldiers. I stepped on so many after he had ‘cleaned’ his room.

Yes Decluttering toys is hard because my kids love everything but don’t need and can’t find things if they have everything. It’s also just so sentimental since getting rid of toys means saying goodbye to another stage or phase. But it’s necessary. I like to declutter toys into a box that I put in our crawl space and if they haven’t asked for it in 3-6 months I donate them. They’ve only asked for things 2 or 3 times ever.
    Thanks again for the motivation

I am not a child development expert, but I recommend reading "Simplicity Parenting," which among many things, discusses the environment of a child. The author relates PTSD symptoms of children living in traumatic situations, like being war refugees, to that of children living with and in too much stuff. Although one group of children were physically safer, both groups of children shared the same behavioral tendencies. 🤯 Definitely worth the read. This book helped to put so many things in perspective for me as a parent, including letting go of the guilt and focusing more on being more intentional about our family culture. Highly recommend!
Great video, Steph. I appreciate the openness around the struggle to let things go, especially pertaining to things that are for children. The level of respect that you have for them is lovely!

OMG I laughed! You scared me when you said "vintage toys...look at this! from 1971 - that's 50 years old" (I was 11 LOL - I"m vintage - like a fine wine!) Fantastic doll house!! I have no little kids, but a small space for my grand daughters toys - purged :-) also spent my day working on my Zone cleaning sheets!! I'm excited to start using them (in plastic sheet protectors, and I dug out my dry erase marker to use on them) I digress! Loving these videos Steph! thanks again #springdeclutter #fellowcanadiangirl (and YES - less toys the better - they get overwhelmed with too many options - good idea to put them away for rotation once in awhile)

I do not have much toys left in my home. The ones I currently have is sentimental. I studied early childhood development and we were taught that children actually don't need to have a lot of toys in order to happy. Children tend to be very creative and they can play with anything. When it comes to finding ways to entertain kids, open-ended material's are recommended. These are things like papers, blocks, lego, things from nature, and so many more.

Toys are sooo hard. For example I got my daughter a doll for her very first Christmas. She NEVER played with it so I gave it away when she was about 3-4. When she was 5 she found the picture of her with the doll when she was like 9 months old and absolutely flipped. I had to scour the internet for another one and paid twice as much as the original. When I got it I gave it to her brother and told him to tell her he found it in the closet. 😂 She was so beyond excited. It broke her heart that it was “missing.”

Unfortunately I wasn't able to follow this series but we will start decluttering tomorrow. Saturday there will be a collection of things for the flee market on our national holliday (the king's birthday) next week. So we don't even have to take it to the thriftstore! My children like to get the clutter before it leaves the house too! I moved toys upstairs and it made our living room so much easier to maintain. Even when we got sick and also were grieving. It made me realise even more I want a decluttered home.

My kids have done a pre-xmas toy declutter for several years now and while I do admit to sometimes "rescuing" some things from their "donate" pile and storing them away, for the most part they make good, realistic choices about what they are actually playing with and it helps keep things under control without me having to get too into decluttering their stuff. (Have to add: We also love our vintage fisher price!)

My heart went out to you, as you were so torn in your decisions. I remember those days so well. My girls are mid-late teens now. I wish I had known about minimalism when they were little.
Just recently, we sold 23 sets of the Lego Friends...and miraculously there were no missing pieces! Do you know how much time and effort went into sorting that?! 😜
And FYI...all those sets made it harder to set up and so they lost interest. Or when it was all set up, I didn't have the heart to tell them to clean it up because it was so much work to set up in the first place. Sigh!
Don't be hard on yourself. It's natural as a mom to feel that way. You're doing great!

She asked me why I saved all of the stuff and wished I had not because it was hard on her. She had already begun her decluttering journey and it stressed her out. Love this series and this video in particular! I have 6.5yo twins and almost 5yo and what has been best for us are these little 12Qt Iris locking plastic bins so we can subdivide and do the container concept. We only have as much LEGO, Duplo, Barbie, Polly Pocket, etc as fits in each bin and they can only get 1-3 bins at a time to play with. It makes it MUCH easier to maintain for us (and the bins aren’t so big they can’t move/carry them). I hear you on McD toys - some are such boring crap, but others are iconic characters (Mario and Snoopy and Pokémon!) or actually great toys! Most of that stuff we don’t obviously pass along (onesies and jumperoos) is in long-term quarantine. I’m actually thinking about getting a huge tub for stuffies - we’ve tried the beanbag, storage benches, piles on a couch, and it’s all too much, but what they are attached to and how much changes. I want to implement long-term storage for them so they can rotate but they stay safe from moisture and pests.
And we STILL HAVE the wooden activity cube. Sigh. I just bring it up whenever someone comes over with a baby/toddler.

My son is 30 yrs. old, so no toys to purge at my house. He had buckets of Legos and was willing to donate them years ago. He did keep some of his favorite childhood toys and we have them saved in a bin. I worked on kitchen utensils - we have too many! Thanks Steph for your encouragement every day!

Art supplies are hard for us. My kiddos love the e art supplies. We try to get rid of it when it’s used up…that helps not to recycle ♻️ a lot of projects. My kids helped me Declutter their little kitchen stuff!

Steph, from my experience as both a parent and an early childhood educator the best toys for kids are open-ended toys, that is toys with multiple ways to use them. If they have something from each of these categories they will be more than content:
    1. Some sort of construction toys, (eg. wooden blocks, duplo, magnetic tiles, lego etc),
    2. Some sort of character toys, (eg. wooden people, plastic animals etc) they can use to act out real-life scenes they observe alongside their construction toys
    3. Dolls or teddies to learn empathy and roleplay caring for something,
    4. Balls for gross motor development,
    5. Some craft supplies for fine motor and creative development
The key is to not have one-purpose toys (they get bored with them in five seconds) and to only have one or maybe two things at a time from each category so they can easily manage and use them. Toy rotation systems are great because if you find they are not playing so well with their toys you can swap out something from one or two of the categories and they instantly play better again.
Of course, all that being said, letting them run wild and free outside in nature is better than any toy created by humans!!! My opinion anyway!

Hi Steph…I had a spread of years with no toys and then the grandkids came along. I think I have less patience with toys all over but there are less toys and the kids go home. My challenge is to not let the toy closet or the bookcase overflow. So far, under control👍🏻

When my kids were young, I did a toy rotation. Only a few things at a time. They would get tired of things and it was time to rotate them out and bring out stuff that was stored. Reduce the guilt of getting rid of stuff.

This is a tough one. My kids are older and it's definitely harder to purge toys when they've become attached to everything and can remember who gave them what!

  • @amandaburger2506

With the things you're not sure about, like the blocks, you could always put them away out of sight and if they don't ask for them within the next month then get rid of them. Also, the magformers definitely fill the same role as blocks in terms cognitive development.
I had to do a solo purge of my daughter's room recently. She is pretty good at helping me declutter, but her room had gotten to the point that she was overwhelmed by it and couldn't maintain it at all. She was incredibly grateful that I did it and hasn't noticed the things I got rid of (mostly garbage and fast food toys).

Great job!! I'm a family child care provider so I have 6 kids in my home every day all day. My life is filled with toys and art supplies. It's taken some time but I am definitely on top of the toy game. I care for children of all ages so I have to be ready on the fly. In our home every toy has a designated spot on a shelf and it has its own container. I do have certain rules that would help every family. First of all food and drinks stay in the kitchen or dining room area. (contain that mess to one area) Toys are fun but only one toy off of the shelf at a time because too many toys on the floor cause accidents and we have to be safe. Set a timer if needed to get kids into the groove of cleaning up their own messes. Children need to learn this is a basic part of life and the sooner the better for them. All of my kids are 3 years old and under and they all have a great time learning through play and they have even carried our clean up process to their own homes and their parents are thrilled. I'm so proud of them. (Now to get them to make their beds in the mornings... lol)

I find toys hard too. Our youngest is finally starting to out grow some, but there are definitely some toys I don't want to get rid of! We have all agreed on some pretty high criteria for what toys get to stay in our house. There is only one thing that my daughter has regretted getting rid of (8yo) and we working on a replacement

I love your idea of storing a lot of the toys away, and then rotating them back out periodically. Sometimes the old favorites get played with a lot more when they reappear!

Big trucks/ diggers that are robust can go outside to play in a sand or gravel pit.
Keep the smaller ones, the box is the container the limit.
I got rid of most of the noisy stuff. Unless really really played with, had some as part of a farm, farmhouse. Like you say if they haven't got something they will create "out of the blocks" a house, pigsty or stables for the people and animals to go into.

Toys are so hard. My kids are old enough that they are involved with it and we go through all the toys together. They usually don't want to part with many things. I do find if they can give it to their cousins they are more willing to part with it. And I tell my sister she's under no obligation to keep things we give them.
