Funny, when I was a little girl, I asked my mom what did Mary and Joseph do with the gifts from the wise men. She told me that their gifts provided for Mary and Joseph when they fled to Egypt.

In book Mistical city of God from Maria of Agreda, she wrote that Mary left Joseph to do whatever he wants with those gifts because she wasn't attracted to material goods at all. He decided to split those goods in three equal parts. First part went to the Temple in Jerusalem, the second part went to synagogue of Betlehem where Jesus was curcumcised, and the third part went to the poor.

Of course the maji were not there the night of the birth. Joseph and Mary brought two turtle doves to the Temple, for the presentation of Jesus, because they were poor.

My instincts are telling me that the gifts are symbolic of Christ’s roles as prophet, priest, and king. I’ll have to meditate on this some more, but I wonder if anyone had heard this before and can add to it?

Exactly right. The kingly gifts funded the travel to/from Egypt and the stay in Egypt.

My thought is at the 8th-day ceremony they did not have much with them - hence, they could only offer the two doves. They had left their home to attend the census - so they probably didn't bring much along. Joseph, being a carpenter, a skilled trade - was probably considered middle class in his hometown of Nazareth. Except for their status at the circumcision, there is no mention that they were poor (it wasn't that they couldn't afford a room - every place was booked, because of the census). The wise men came with gifts- but not necessarily while they were in Bethlehem, because Herod kills all males up to two years old. I believe God guided the wise men specifically to ensure the family had some means to make the journey and live in Egypt - as he always seems to do! :-)

I really had to laugh at this question. And then I realized it was serious. Theologically it's probably very important to think about this.😅

Hi Jeff. I really enjoy your videos and learn so much. For New Years I’ve decided to pick a Saint and learn, pray and grow with my Saint for the year. (The Saint in a year). Haha. I wondered if you have ever done this or would encourage a year journey with a Saint.

They never do specify how much gold... a small amount, I'd imagine.

Gifts were usually large , IMHO, or else would make the giver look stingy. Also, gifts from God are always greater than what one would expect.

I have a question, why was jesus named as such and not immanuel the way it was prophesized by isaiah. Thanks for the clarification and many blessings

This is just my musing, but I'll give this question a shot. Emmanuel means “God with us” and this is what Jesus is. He fulfills this prophecy by the fact that in His being He is Emmanuel, God coming down to dwell with His people. On the other hand, Jesus means “the Lord saves” which more corresponds to His purpose. He came down to save the world from sin.

I would say thst Isaiah prophesized that name because he wrote in many places that God will dwell with his people (God with us), but Joseph and Mary got specific instruction from angel to give him the name Jesus, so they did.

When they went to the temple, they offered doves, which is what poor people would offer at the temple. Leviticus 12, Exodus 13:12-15, etc.). Luke says that Joseph and Mary take the option provided for poor people (those who could not afford a lamb; Leviticus 12:8), sacrificing "a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons." Luke 2:21-24
