  • Are Root Canals Necessary? Answers by Dr Dana Rockey Newport Beach Dentist
Dr. Rockey answers a question about root canals that we hear increasingly from patients and from our UA-cam viewers - whether root canals are effective, if they’re good for you, and if they are necessary.
In this video Dana reviews several xray slides to show you illustrate several recent examples. In one extreme case, a patient contacted our office in a lot of pain. We took an x-ray and it was obvious right away that there was an issue. A large cavity inside the tooth was very close to the nerve, which is a vital, living tissue that pumps blood in and out of the area. When the bacteria from the decay actually get in to the pulp chamber and infects the tissue, that’s when we get inflammation and swelling. Our immune system kicks in to action to fix a problem, to fight infection.
As the immune system sends germ killers and other cells into the infected area to fix the problem we experience swelling, which we refer to as inflammation. The technical term is “pulpits” - the inflammation of the dental pulp tissue.
Symptoms of an infected tooth can range from:
    - Zero (0) to some cold sensitivity
    - Lingering cold sensitivity to some heat sensitivity
    - Some cycling on and off a little bit of pain all the way to excruciating pain
The example shown in this video is a straight-forward case: large cavity into the nerve, we have problems, we’ve got to do something. Based on what we saw, that a bulk of the tooth is left, we would be able to put a restoration on the tooth, likely a crown. So, I would send this patient to a root canal specialist; they’re going to do a root canal and that should be all that this tooth and person needs.
In answer to the question, are root canals good for you and are they necessary:
First, in our practice, we don’t deal in generalities. We strongly believe that each patients and each tooth must be approached and treated on their own merits. Every person and situation is unique with their own medical history. We would treat someone with multiple artificial joints, or cardiovascular issues who would not do well with a large active infection around their teeth, differently than someone else. Given the example of the large infection shown earlier in the video, if that patient had artificial joints or cardiovascular issues, we might suggest that the tooth be removed in order to remove the infection. In the second example shown in the video where a greater portion of the tooth is viable, we might recommend another way of treating the infection other than a root canal.
As an integrative healthcare provider, we take a whole person view and consider past medical history of each person when making a diagnose and making recommendations on how to treat root causes.

He says he's sending the patient to get a root canal, but he doesn't answer the question if their necessary, i.e., he didn't explain well the answer to the title of the video. Annoying!

He does answer it . He explains that it depends on the circumstances . For some teeth it's better to extract it, but for some a root canal can work and save the tooth .

Can't you just ride out the pain until the nerve dies? While using H2O2 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide to remove bacteria and infection? A waterpik with hydrogen peroxide and water on a low pressure setting works wonders. And using 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide 3x daily from 3 to 12 drops will eliminate any bacteria and disease. Disease and bacteria can NOT live in an oxygenated environment. Far too many major dangers of removing tissue with root canals. Obviously, these dentists are going to be pro root canal to line their pockets. Certainly a conflict of interest.

I’ve had over six root canals and “ride out the pain” was not an option. When my teeth were infected, it was below the enamel and I wouldn’t have been able to get at the infection with the method you described.

I tell people, if you ever get a root canal go to a endodontic dentist who uses a microscope.
A microscope will show you if the canals split. A regular dentist does not use a microscope and if you do a root canal with a regular dentist it wont work if the canals split. An Xray or one of those magnifying glasses dentists use wont show if the canals split. If your canals split and you have a dentist do the root canal with out using a microscope, the Root canal will not be successful.
I can tell you, even my dentist admitted, he wouldn't be able to do the root canal correctly if the canal's split. Dentists don't want to tell people this.
I only found out about this, cause this happened to a friend of mine, who got a root canal from a dentist who didn't use a microscope and the root canal failed.
He had to get another root canal from a endodontic dentist who uses a microscope. Then he had to get that same tooth re-crowned. That cost a lot of money. So if you need a root canal, make sure you go to a endodontist.

@@danlivni2097what happened was I went to a dentist when I was much younger, a regular dentist with pretty severe tooth pain, they did xrays and said I needed a root canal. They did the whole thing, drilled, used the files and then put a crown on it. About 20 years later I developed a pain in that area and went back to the dentist. He took xrays and said that they had never got all the nerve out of the tooth on my first root canal and then sent mr to a endodontist to have it redone. This has happened twice to me. I have considered getting all on 4's if I can afford it. I was a proffesional Firefighter and had a really bad back and shoulder injury and have also cut two fingers off. I have never had pain like I did when the root canal went bad.

I have a bump on my 2nd to last molar on my lower jaw. This is about 1 year after my root canal on it (until i noticed it). It has a total area of about a dime, and is shaped like a triangle relative to the teeth. It is hard to feel it from the inside of my mouth and is best felt from the outide, it is pretty deep. The bump starts broadly at the bottom of the chin bone and narrows to that tooth. I also feel a thickened line, like a nerve or vein, that runs parallel to it. I was hoping to getting any information on what it might be and the procedure that might have to be done. I currently have no pain. I am concerned and pretty scared as a 18 year old on what might happen and the costs as well.

When the damage is so close to the nerve, and the trauma to the tooth to fix it might be to much stress on the tooth. The tooth can “die” from the trauma causing more pain and need more dental intervention like a root canal.

3:13, “yes we do clean out the decay and do the root canal”. Healthy patient or not, that X-ray is a bad example of a tooth for root canal- the dark part is a void (he said that in the beginning of the video). That void goes in between where the roots join and under the bone... I hope he doesn’t do a root canal on that... that tooth needs extraction. I’m sure they didn’t do root canal there and just pulled up an X-ray to show a huge cavity.

True... But always, the soldier cells will not win! Especially in the conditions our teeth are. When our soldier cells are loosing battle, it's a deadly sight and signs, that itself makes doctors to go all guns blazing. It is good to cut the leg and save the man than let him die for the frostbit leg right!? Also, eventhough soldier cells win the damage done by inflammation is irreversible, so why take chance?
