- A random collection of snippets and thoughts resulting from Tankfest 2018. As you can imagine, more is to follow. Was at a car museum over the weekend. Somehow got "Rotary" in my head instead of "Radial" when editing this.
I have concluded that I need to buy a new wireless microphone transmitter. The strange audio voiceover insets are as a result of cutting out.

Asked a mate in the Royal Engineers regarding the switch to scissors bridge. His reply was that it was due to speed of deployment (it's a lot faster, apparently), reliability of the mechanism, but the biggest reason was speed of recovery of the bridge. With this you pretty much hook, lift, go. With horizontal it's a little more complicated. There were also minor things like that this comes down at a steeper angle, and can thus be used on more varied terrain than one that much possibly slide "through" something. The example he gave was on Salisbury there is a common place they use the scissors to crush bushes and small trees, to teach that it can be done.
However of note, the British Army retains the BR90, which IS a horizontal launch, for times when it is preferred. Also mounted on a much quieter protected truck, so obviously to aim at less overt uses.
Retrosicotte The BR90 replaced the MGB and fills a different role to the AVLB. Since it is built from sections it could not be launched in any other way except horizontally. As far as I know the Titan was always going to be a vertically launched scissors bridge (initial studies included both styles but vertical launch was known and proven in British service). It has a larger launch envelope (heights of the different banks, ie laid against walls or when the far bank is much higher) than the vertical launch system. Originally it was faster and enabled a longer span to be laid but I am not so sure with the newer horizontal launch systems (I have been out of the Sappers for 11 years now).

Great video, Nick! Minor clarification, though. On the M4A1, your onscreen annotation indicates the R-975 as a "rotary" engine. In fact, it's a radial. Very similar, but the whole engine spins in the case of a rotary engine. A radial engine has the same cylinder configuration, but doesn't go spinning in circles like its cousin.

Nikola, similar in form factor. Big engine with cylinders splayed out from a central hub. Then there's the other rotary of magic spinning triangles.
"Rotary" just means the whole engine spins. There are examples of rotary but not piston engines.

I was there when you were recording this and looked forward to it. Very nice meeting you Nick. I know you were very keen to get the videos recorded, but the highlights of Tank Fest were meeting so many people that we've come to know, respect and admire on UA-cam. Hope to see you again next year.

if anyone ever said their hero seemed shorter than expected this is certainly not the case meeting the Chieftain of which i managed to meet and stand next to and get a picture with while at tankfest honestly tankfest is amazing but sometimes just seeing someone you've spent hours watching on youtube and learning from them it actually becomes perhaps the best part of tankfest to actually meet the people who helped you become perhaps who you are today (my work colleagues are fed up of tanks...for some reason lol)

This was a really fun video! My mind boggles when I think of the mechanical forces involved in operation a scissors bridge, and that grease spot apparently going opposite of the sprocket on the Easy 8 (an illusion caused by the video camera, of course) was a bit eye-twisting. :p
I was there, Tankfest was awesome! Those Shermans sounded really cool in person, especially the first one with the radial engine.
Another thing that was interesting to see was just how much blue smoke those Soviet tanks (including the Type 59) produced. No other diesel engined vehicle got even close. I wonder if they only do that when the engine is cold or even when warm?
"It was what it was" true words, I am a German. I'm not even close to right wing, but I think historical objects, even when used in games, should have their historical appearance. Shouldn't people realize, that war crimes were done, with these machines?

Not exactly... axis symbols are generally not used in games etc... The hammer and sickle is displayed proudly in just about every video game despite being banned by the same law as the swastika in the EU and most countries around the world. It is just PC double standard bullshit most of the time.
I think the only sticking point legally should be when someone uses it politically. Other than that you might as well let it be in historical games and shows.

Something I can talk about:
Former M-60 AVLB driver and commander, did the 80 hour New Equipment Fielding training when the 299th BN BN (1/4ID's organic EN BN late 1990s until mid 2000s) converted over to M104.
Horizontal bridges take approx 3 times as much time to lay. A good, skilled AVLB crewman could drop one very fast compared to the horizontal bridges. Recovery is as fast as emplacement whereas with the Wolverine, it took about 3 times as long as emplacement.
Additionally, the M104 was a pain to maintain - the computerized controls were line replaceable units and we didn't exactly have a stock of them, unlike the tanks which were produced in the thousands with spares in proportion. The old M-60 had no computers involved in launching the bridge, just hydraulics. The maintenance issues we had with the M-60 related to the fact that we had old, old vehicles. At least one in the 299th had a two digit vehicle serial number, which made it not much younger than my father. And a lot of spare parts were no longer in production and were difficult to get. A modern vehicle with a vertical launch bridge is going to be far easier to maintain.
Additionally, that style of bridge can better handle situations where the embankment on the sides of the gap are at different heights.

The quadruple 50.call system was also mouted to Portuguese made Berliet Tramagal trucks and used in the Colonial War from 1963-74 with great eficiency

EDIT: Also, there are people in the video shown wearing full combat gear whilst inside large metal boxes. I think a black shirt is positively freezing in comparison.

My dad lost most of his hearing in an M16 in korea.. His unit was overrun at night and he was on the last vehicle out firing the quad 50s without any hearing protection. I believe that the engine on that M4A1 is a radial not a rotary. A rotary engine spins the entire engine and the crank sits still. Used primarily in WWI aircraft.

Chieftain, during your Sherman research have you found references to Sherman 90mm prototype or the actual vehicle? It is covered by RP Hunnicutt Sherman, page 212.
Summary: The 90mm Sherman, was requested by The Amour Board. They had concluded Autumn 1943 that Sherman would be the only tank available for Normandy. However, the “Role of the Army Ground Forces in development of equipment Army Ground Forces study No 34 1946, red book” does cover events.
“In November 1943, ETO requested the highest priority be given development of the T26El tank, mounting a 90mm gun. General Devers, then Commanding General of ETO, requested production of 250 of these tanks on the basis of providing one for each five M4’s”. This request, does challenge the view there was no “Battle Need” request from the field. This was apposed by General McNair, who favoured towed Anti-Tank weapons to deal with enemy tank. General Eisenhower, also apposed because of logistics impact, bridging equipment etc, because they thought at the time the 76mm was up to the job”. However, it does beg the questions, if the 76mm was up to the job, then logically why is General Devers asking for a 90mm tank, what did the field know?
RP Hunnicutt outlined the production of a prototype, an E6 Sherman with a T25/T26 turret and modified internals. Basically, following the British firefly example get our best gun and put it into our best tank. This would have been a better solution with the space of the Pershing turret.
Interestingly, Reference:WO/229/83, U.K. During the July 1944 tank panic there is an Eisenhower memo references to a 90mm gun development by the War Department to put into a Sherman, which quote is not effective against Tigers and Panthers.
By July it was academic, a 90mm Sherman, solution was too little and too later for the pace of events, the eggs were in the Pershing basket.

First time at Tankfest this year, was absolutely amazing, had a two day pass and still didn't get round to seeing everything, would definitely go again, hopefully next time it won't be so hot.

Chieftain I recently stumbled upon your channel and I'm happy I did. I don't play World of Tanks but I do love history. One question though, where are you from originally? You have a very unique accent.
San Francisco, CA. Though the accent is formed primarily from 15 years or so in Ireland.
Do you think the US Army would send an Abrams with crew to our friends across the pond for tankfest? I think it would really be amazing to have both the Chally 2 and the Abrams, both having seen a lot of combat, on the track together

I Have a question: According to FM 17-33 Tank Battalion 1949, there was a "heavy tank battalion" with three tank companies in Armored Divisions. However, the M26 was re-designated as Medium Tank M26 in 1946, and the first real American heavy tank, the 120mm Gun Tank M103, was introduced to service in 1957. 300 T43 heavy tanks were built in 1953 but they got stucked in Aberdeen. And M46 was still called Medium Tank M46, and 90mm Gun Tank M47 and 90mm Gun Tank M48 were both considered as medium tanks. Thus there were no "heavy tanks" for the "heavy tank battalion". So what kind of tank was the "heavy tank battalion" using, or did this type of unit only exist on paper, or the "heavy tank" was a kind of role other than a kind of tank?

There are two types of engine which Rotary refers to:
1: Looks like a radial, but the crankshaft is affixed to the firewall, or some other fixed point, and it is the cylinders that spin around it: ua-cam.com/video/CYc-H8Wg-MQ/v-deo.html
2: The type you are familiar with, which features magic spinning triangles.
Goldmarble More precise name for the second one would be Wankel engine or Wankel rotary engine to not confuse the two but the first one is pretty weird and unusual anyway.
And either way, the Sherman didn't use a rotary radial engine. The crank case and cylinders were mounted to the chassis, making it a standard radial engine.
@Chieftain, a question: I saw another video of an M50 or M51 Super Sherman that was being rebuilt, and it appeared to be the M4A1 Sherman to begin with, given the necessary modifications with modern (for the time) armament by the new Israeli Army, and apparently this particular tank retained the radial aircraft powerplant...was this a thing or did Israeli procurement simply snatch up any Sherman tank they could find, fix it up as best they could and slap whatever modernization they could get their hands on and bang, new tank for IDF?
it seems the IDF snatched what tanks they could get their hands on, but had preferences to what tanks they updated
i'm not sure on the M-50, but on, the M-51 they preferred M4A1s, most of the M-51s out there are large hatch M4A1E8 with late T26 turret and sharp nose E8543 differential cover

perhaps its just that the scissor bridge is mechanically a lot simpler than the other type? you just unfold it, you don't have to slide the pieces along each other then line them up and connect them.
and all of the ones i have seen, they are permanently connected and use gravity to maintain the center connection.
and i would imagine the vehicle is a lot simpler because of it.
James Axelrad We have been using scissors bridges in the UK since WW2 (Covenanter AVLB) through Churchill, Centurion, Chieftain AVLB's all using vertical launch. It used to be quicker and enable a longer bridge to be laid (so a wider gap to be spanned) but not sure with the newer systems in use now. The vertical launch bridges were also more flexible, being able to be laid with banks at significantly different heights or against obstructions like walls or high vertical banks.
Chaz t that's what I think too,but the comment was in reference to the section on the advantages and disbanded of each type.

It's the overhang at the back of the turret. Comes from the sticky-out bit at the back of a dress/skirt in the 18th/19th centuries or so.

Has the scissors bridge ever been used in actual combat? It is so small, it really can't span much more than a drainage ditch.
DavidPT40 Many times by many nations in conflict (the first usage I know was Covenanter AVLB's in WW2). The British scisdors bridges used to be longer than any contempory horizontal laid bridge, they could also be laid faster. Not so sure now about that but they have advantages and some disadvantages with both systems.
DavidPT40 yes, I have seen them in use in Iraq - in one case, spanning a hole in the treadway of a highway bridge. I know the US used them in Desert Storm as well. I used to know the percentage of gaps it could span in both Western Europe and Korea, but that piece of trivia, like so many others from my early career, has rattled loose.

Tickets were £24 for 1 day. You could also get 2 and 3 day tickets which worked out cheaper.

That tank with the digger on it reminds me of the movie Armageddon in that seems completely backwards. Why train drillers to be astronauts when the opposite is much easier. Why make a tank into digger when armouring a digger would be much easier.

There are times when I wonder how Mr. Moran's thesis about the Sherman being the best tank for the USA holds up when you consider how many different powerplants they had. How could one manage to find spares for all those different engines???
However, I then remember that Germany opted not to ask its car companies to lead production of panzers but rather its heavy engineering companies that built construction equipment and locomotives in general and I see how the USA managed to utterly leave Germany in the dust in production. You do not want people who build trains to mass produce anything because they spend all day asking how they can tweak this piece to get more performance rather than asking how they can make ten more exactly the same for the cost of only five units. Detroit for the win, 1944.
Where possible, units would be equipped with only one type of Sherman, so they only needed to worry about one set of spares. However, the US manufacturing capability was so great they could build spare parts basically as quickly as complete tanks.
Also, the US did use plenty of train companies for it's tanks. Lima Locomotive Works in Ohio was the first company that manufactured M4A1 Shermans for the UK. Baldwin Locomotive Works built M3 Lees and M4 Shermans... Then there was also Pressed Steel Car Co, Pullman Standard Car Co, who made railway cars, and American Locomotive (ALCO) and Pacific Car and Foundry. Railway companies were one of the few types of companies who actually had the correct equipment and engineering capacity to mass produce tanks.
Of the 10 main builders of Shermans in the US, 2 were actual Arsenals (Detroit and Fisher) only 1 was a Motor Car company (Ford), 1 was a Heavy Engineering and Tool Company (Federal Machine and Welder) and the other 6 were railway companies.

Iirc the Chrysler Multibank was made by slapping together some AMC 4.0 Liter straight 6 engines, the same engine in my 2001 Jeep.
