Girl, you just saved my life. I have been sewing skirts for a while but i never knew how to make a blouse and sleeves by my measurements. I am so grateful and thankfull to have found you. I am your subscriber now ❤
That "walking the sleeve" technique is everything I ever wanted to know. Amazing tutorial, super quick and no unnecessary talking like usually in sewing tutorials, just the good stuff! Thanks so much!
This is, hands down, the most comprehensive and easy to follow sleeve pattern tutorial on youtube! And all the troubleshooting techniques and that accent... to die for! Thaaaaank you! 🤗🤗🤗
I'm just starting out figuring out how to make patterns. Most of it seems to be common sense mostly. I've been searching for days trying to figure out the proper way to make the shoulder come together. This is BY FAR the best video I've found. My search is over! Thank you so much.
I only found your channel last night. I am so excited I did! this is what I have been seeking for 14 years now. You make it so very easy to comprehend the instructions you give. I can't wait to begin drafting my own patterns. God bless you always.
This was awesome clear video! I am learning to sew and drafted a t-shirt and I could tell my arm pattern was not right. Thank you for showing how to draft it and check it for accuracy and adjustments. Thank so much!
You're killing me with these tutorials! It is so easy to understand and I want to put all my things aside and start drawing :) Hope to do so soon, Thanks xx
Has anyone watching actually tried the bodice and this sleeve? This will be my 4th atempt at drafting. I need a real review before I start. Elewa, thank you so much for these clean cut tutorials. I hate waiting a year and a day before someone gets to the point. Thank you. Thank you.
TheSisters I did. It was really hard to make the bodice fit, but as I turned it into a strapless body it turned out okay. I started on the sleeve today and it does not fit at all. At first the sleeve cap was way too large. Then I tried it on and my elbow did not fit. I ripped it open at the elbow but could not move the last bit over my shoulder. It's frustrating me to no end so I decided that after wasting a lot of paper and fabric I'm giving up :(
Don't give up. If I told you how many times I made something before I got it perfect you'd probably feel a lot better knowing it's not just you :) It takes time. And finding the perfect cap sleeve height can be tricky because it depends on the type of sleeve you're going for. My default measurements are: - 6" cap height - 12" bicep circumference and then I adjust from there.
Remember if you are going to reduce the sleeve cap like that, you will also reduce the width of the sleeve, so adjust as needed. Thank you, that was very helpful.
i had this project I was working on but was ready to give up because I couldn't get the sleeves, I tried various tutorials but they weren't very helpful, but THIS!!!!!! it is just so clear, I think i'm gonna try again thank you.
You're one of the best things I've discovered on UA-cam 😻. Drafting patterns using the method I've been taught is tedious. Can't wait to try your methods. Thanks for sharing 😚
OHMAHGERR. FINALLY! a friggin tutorial on sleeve drafting i can understand! and yeah, i read other comments and maybe it could be a better tutorial but from all the tutorials i've ATTEMPTED to follow, this one is BY FAR, the BEST! i am so appreciative of your simplistic and to the point tutorial :) you have a gift and if you taught a sewing class i would DEFINITELY sign up! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I appreciate you! Gave me a quick reminder how to edit my sleeves! Thank you so much for all your hard work in producing this video! Definitely be liking and subscribing! 🥰
Thanks for the great tutorial. I will be trying this out asap. If you have a flexible curve ruler you can walk it aroun the armhole and sleeve opening to check if they match. I got mine for less than $10 at Joannes. With a sale or coupon it would be much less. Doing it that way you know how much more or less you need to fix the sleeve.
This worked for me SO well and I just wanted to thank you for posting this and being so detailed. I was making a custom jacket and had no clue how to make the sleeve work till I watched your tutorial. Thank you!!
holy shit thank you, ive been combing through youtube for hours trying to wrap my head around this, you made it sooo simple and easy like it should be !
Such a great tutorial, thank! In terms of fit, is there much of a visible difference between extending/shortening the cap height or changing the bicep width? How come you prefer to adjust through the bicep? Thanks!!
Another great tutorial. Just have a couple of questions. You say you choose the adjustment technique according to the sleeve type. Can you give some examples of the kind of sleeve you would use for each technique? And do we add seam allowance? Thanks.
Hi! If you wanted to make a shirt or a coat or something, they usually have cap heights that are quite high. T-shirts on the other hand have shorter cap heights. There's a great article that explains it better here: www.ikatbag.com/2014/03/subtelties-in-drafting-sleeves.html Also, yes you need to add seam allowance :)
I love your tutorials. I have a request though, please help me figure out how to create the sleeve based on what I have already have for the arm holes on the bodice. For example let's say I want the armhole pattern to start 2 inches away from the neck for a more dramatic look, instead from the neck to the end of the shoulder.
hi from new zealand :) this is the BEST sleeve tute i've come across so THANK YOU! One question though, when making the cutting adjustments to the sleeve cap or bicep, how do you how much to measure out or in when re-tracing to fit the bodice? hope that makes sense? Thanks again xx
Hi Elewa. Thanks for the tutorial, so nice. Pls how do you know if the upper part of the sleeve cap will fit properly? What I mean is The upper part of the sleeve cap when it is getting closer to the shoulder. Thanks
The walking the sleeve method should confirm whether or not it will fit. Or you can start pinning the sleeve to the bodice from the top and work your way around the front and back.
Elewa thanks for your quick response. I'm not talking about the walking of the sleeve. I'm referring to the fitting on the actual human arm around that cap. I make custom clothing and when I have taken the person's arm measurements and they are gone I want to be sure the sleeve will fit them at the cap area when I draft the sleeve pattern. How do I check this on the pattern? Or is it that it will always fit the person's cap area if I use this your method? Thanks
Mojisola Koretimi Such a good question she did a good tutorial but I hate when they had random measurements without telling you where they got it from, if the measurements of the points were taken directly from the persons measurements or the bodice measurements it would probably eliminate the need to adjust it in the end.
Thanks a lot Elewa. Please like how many inches do we need to raise the slashed cap height or shorten it in order not over do it or have excess ease that will end up as gathers.
Hi Tonia, The important thing is to get the cap length very very close to the length of the armhole. I think the furthest you'd want to part the cap is an inch (between the split caps). If you have to go further, it'll distort the sleeve so in that case, it'll probably be best to redraft using either a new cap height or bicep circumference. Good luck!
I have been trying to understand how to add sleeves to my sloper for 17 years! Can't wait to try it. One question though. Will this work for shoulders that slump forward? Thanks
It should do if you are just moving the shoulder point forward from the back bodice to the front bodice. But why don't you test that out as a toile/muslin or some scrap fabric?
Hey Elewa, thanks for educating us amateur dressmakers! I'd like to know how to make a straight sleeve into a fitted one. I can't seem to find an instructional article or video to show me how. Would you help me please?
I would like to raise the height of my armhole *without making my sleeve narrower*, so that I can lift my arms higher without problem, since I will not be using a stretchy fabric. How can I adjust the sleeve or bodice pattern to raise the armhole depth under my arm to allow for lifting my arms higher up? Thank you very much for your reply in advance, and thank you for making the video.
Hi, the only thing I have similar to that is my tutorial on constructing a bodice block. But I'll definitely consider doing more! ua-cam.com/video/63PLhJAxvfU/v-deo.html
Hi Elewa! First of all, thank you so much for doing these!!!! I am learning how to make patterns from your videos but I am a little stumped on the sleeves as my front and back arm holes depth are 1 inch apart so the sleeve is good for the front half or the bodice but not the back. Please how do I rectify this problem! Thank you!!!

Great idea. Your work is awesome, man.

Keep the front half of the sleeve in place and slightly move the back half using the spreading method shown :)
Thank you!!!
Lovely tutorial! God bless u
Thanks Jasmine!
When I do this my cap length looks unusually long. Can you advise?
Thanks for the video. God bless you.
What do you do if the front is too long and the back is too short? Can you offset the middle of the cap towards the front?
Where did you get you’re ruler from ? Can you put links to you’re kit ? Thanks
Can I substitute something for the French curve? 😅 We don't have any here and it's still locked down here :'
Yesssss I know thankx for ur info,
very useful, thank you for this.
Hi...can you explain how to measure the cap height? Thanks
Wow thank you
This is all I need from internet
