I watched this happen live, oh my gosh it was so tense! I was sure the poor jackal was done for. But I believe two things saved him: the cheetah had already eaten, and he didn't run. Had he run, they'd have surely chased him! I felt so bad for the poor, terrified thing. But I guess this is how his own prey feels, too...nature is amazing, but cruel.
You needn't have been worried too much. Cheetahs won't usually attack anything that can fight back. Cheetahs are really wimps -- they would lose a fight to a large dog. Leopards sometimes kill and eat them; of course leopards are tough, but cheetahs are absolutely incapable of defending themselves whatsoever versus a leopard. Cheetahs rarely kill jackals, they aren't generally on the menu.
Oh wow, poor little Jackal, he must have been so frightened but he didn't run and he made so much noise that they just let him be. Whatever the reason I am glad he survived.
Cheetahs seldom take on prey that is likely to fight back, because unlike lions or leopards or any other big cats really, cheetahs are not built for fighting. The cheetah has sacrificed strength for speed, and will usually only prey on or attack animals like Gazelle or young wildebeest etc. In fact the cheetahs were probably more worried about the presence of the jackal, another predator, than the jackal needed to be of theirs.
how did the cheetahs not jack up the jackal? was it all the noise it was making and standing his ground? if he had started running im sure the cheetahs would have gave chase and the predator instinct would have kicked in
5 Cheetahs the Jackel had no chance, he just stood his ground and let the Cheetahs drink. their bellies were probably too full of water to do any chasing. The Jackels only defense was staying put and hoping the cheetahs would just leave.
The livestream offers us a great opportunity to observe interactions without disturbing the animals in their environment
It was definitely a tense moment and I'm happy that the jackal survived the night to see the morning through. A memorable moment.

This must have been crazy to watch live!!! Might have to keep NamibiaCam on in the background more often
Il n'y a pas, ou plus, de trêve de l'eau?😵

Fred said to Harry, "Eh....looks too tough and stringy. Not worth the bother."
That was an amazing encounter! Brave little jackal…
4:27 me when i wake up and know i have to go to school
😂
Cheetah have obviously recently fed and are not hungry. If they were there would be no contest.
Cheetahs generally do not hunt other predators. They are not tough. They get their asses kicked regularly.
@@cacogenicist true but not by black backed Jackals....there were five cheetah against one small jackal. They could have taken him down easily.
I was so impressed. Amazing! Jackal!
Wow that was incredible!
Wow. Was that the same family of cute cheetah cubs we've been watching? They're almost full-grown now.
the jackal had balls staying there...thirst takes precedent.
was less about thirst and more the jackal knew that it would be over if it ran lol
Cheetah is fastest land animal on earth and there were 5 of them. Jackal knew not to run! Cheetahs must not have been hungry either….
Poor little guy! I didn’t know cheetahs moved in packs like that!
I didnt either. I thought they were solo
@@GorfLlubz it was a mother with her four sub-adult cubs.
For a while there I thought the little jackal was in trouble but the cheetahs just wandered off
This jackal was lucky surviving 5 cheetas!
❤Astucia e inteligencia para defender su vida ❤
I wonder how come there was much more water outside the fountain? Was it an unintentional damage? Did they fix it?
very interesting to watch
I hope the jackal survives! Watch out, jackal!

although, could the jackal's distress call, while it perturbed cheetah, attract other more apex predator to its later (off screen) demise?
No point running from Cheetahs.
wow the waterhole was really overflowed that night
Incredible sounds.... are those the cheetahs or is it the poor jackal? It seems that the jackal escaped in the end though, right?!
The jackal. Cheetahs make an odd chirping sound you'd never expect from them.
@@DoubleDogDare54 interesting, thx!😊
Thank you @susanwebb for posting this amazing sighting on today's Livestream!

I thought they kill and then stash their kill if they don’t eat it all.

Both...
Lucky öoud jackal! 😊

kkkk
I was expecting to see the cheetahs get him. Conveniently right in front of the camera so we could witness nature.
Cheetahs are not tough, and not much threat to jackals.
