    It says right on the packaging the studs must be set by riding 30 miles on pavement without sudden acceleration or braking. You didn't follow the directions. My tires work great and haven't lost one stud.

      +keehotee I'm physically pulling knobs off the tire irregardless if they have studs them

      I agree with keehotee. Setting the studs in first is super important. As for how these handle during winter on actual single track mountain bike trails they are amazing and fun. They won't magically hook up in powdered snow which is why you should always be well aware of your riding limits. For me it's super fun.

      @Keehotee : I've just picked up one of the tires for my front wheel to test out this Winter. There is currently no snow on the streets and I'm following the directions and riding on concrete to set the studs. Can i ask how much wear is normal when doing this based on your experience? I've not braked hard or accelerated quickly but the studs are already a bit chewed?

      Coco Mandrake Brand new? There shouldn't be any wear at all. The studs are made from Carbide tungsten which should be fine on concrete/asphalt for many many miles before u start to see wear. If u ride on these for 20miles on road to bed in they should be fine and will last you many winter seasons out on the trail.
      My personal experience they are only to be used in icy or mild packed snow. If there's heavy snow then they will act like any other tire regardless of studs or not. They are best early morning when the trails are still frozen from rain.

      Hey Liquid, I'm not sure I stated that too well. I've rode maybe 5-6 miles so far of the recommended 25 miles to set the studs before using them in snow and ice. After roughly a 5th of the miles required to set the studs towards the middle of the tire are rounded off and are starting to flatten out a bit. I'm guessing this is to be expected? Thanks for the feedback, man.

    Hey Mitch. I am also located in the Calgary/Canmore area and purchased these same tires About two years ago. I would have to disagree with this review as they have worked really quite well for me! I am not a "panzie" and as a matter of fact, I race DH. Perhaps you didn't bed the tires in properly? I Rode street with myn for about 10 hours before actually taking them on my local trails, and in the last two years, I have only lost 3 studs. One of which only fell out because I chopped the entire nob off by hitting a rock very hard haha! I would recommend replacing the studs as it really isn't that expensive considering what you paid for the tires, and then bedding them in considerable well. Hopefully, this works. Cheers mate.

      That’s cool. I’ve lost plenty of studs and even more full knobs riding very gently. I must lack smooth flow! Haha! Either way, I’m not a big fan of these tires for my riding style. For others they work great.

    My experience: Third winter coming up with the Ice Spikers.(29x2.25) Nothing to complain about. I've lost a few studs but they are easily replaced. For me, the key was to seat the studs by riding bare paved trails for approx 20kms. Too bad about your experience.

    • @MitchOnTwoWheels
      @MitchOnTwoWheels  7 років тому

      +jiw71 That's fair. I'm riding them quite aggressively, which is why they're so delicate under me. In an ideal world, I want something Dual Ply but no one seems to make them.

    I've cycled 2 winters with 29x2.25 ice spiker pros on a regular bike, and one winter with 29x2.6 on an e-bike, and I didn't have any problems with them. I cycle everyday, but mostly for commute. I've done a lot more aggressive riding also outside of commuting, and the smaller ones are missing 5 studs and the bigger ones miss none. Did you set the studs first with riding at low pressures without sudden braking or fast corners?

    • @MitchOnTwoWheels
      @MitchOnTwoWheels  7 місяців тому +1

      Yup. Set everything. Remember though, my version of the tire is 10 years old now… the new version may have changed or improved.

      Yeah, true. Time is usually the main culprit that degrades any rubber compounds. Another one is sunlight, or just UV radiation in general.
      Back when I bought my first pair, shwalbe were sending packs of replacement spikes for free if you requested them.

    Have you tried the Nokian winter tires by any chance? Those seem to be well rated as well.

    • @MitchOnTwoWheels
      @MitchOnTwoWheels  7 років тому

      +Coco Mandrake Unfortunately I haven't yet... I would like to try a set though.

    You should try the Nokian Hakka WXC very durable ans never lost any stud

    So the actual knobs are tearing off? Seems pretty common in Schwalbe tires. I'm thinking of running these, Suomi tyres WXC'R312 or DIY spikes. Probably won't be picking up these for dh...

    • @MitchOnTwoWheels
      @MitchOnTwoWheels  7 років тому

      +markus kainulainen yep. They are ripping off the tire. Those Suomi tires look very similar. I wonder if they can take a bit more of a beating.

    • @mtbsieppo
      @mtbsieppo 7 років тому

      Sorry for the late reply! I got the Suomi Tyres and they seem more robust whet it comes to the knobs. The more expensive "Ultimate" version has the same sharp studs as the ISP. I've done one day of dh riding on extremely icy tracks and they gripped ok, but not like diy screws. The tires seemed to roll really well on snow with lots of grip. The other of my tires had a wobble from the factory, but I got it warrantied. I also haven't lost a single stud yet, but I haven't ridden much yet.

      +markus kainulainen that's good to hear. I'll have to check out a pair of them next winter.

    Not 40 hre ... but 40 km for bed in the spikes . Just received mine ( 27.5x2.6 ) from CRC : 90cdn$ each . Almost a bargain , will see if it hold his spikes. Btw there seem to be no direction mark of rotation on their side .

    Completely agree with the reviewer. Even bedding the studs as instructed, they shed studs like a great white sheds teeth tackling an oil tanker if you use them on anything dry. The knobs are so tall and squirmy that they're a liability on technical terrain. I've been running them for two winters, and they suck. Fortunately, I have a fat bike with tires I studded myself, so the Ice Spikers sit on the bench most of the time.

    Wow, I am a bit surprised. The vast majority of reviews are very positive but I get a feeling they aren't doing serious mountain biking but more just mildvtrail rides.

    • @MitchOnTwoWheels
      @MitchOnTwoWheels  7 років тому

      +schlooonginator agreed. In a mild/delicate use application these rock! Pushing them like an enduro tire exposes that it's delicate.

    OMG...WHAAAAT....40 HOURS..run in time?...really?
    I ran mine in for 20 miles at max pressure , then dropping 5 psi for every 5 miles untill I reached 30 psi and the outer studs..never ever had a problem. Done over 1000 miles since I bought them 5 yrs ago.

      Must be lucky...I gave mine the royal treatment and they’re missing tons of studs.
