Excellent description of the Egyptian shimmy - what I call a "hip shimmy" is driven from the obliques and the knees just go along for the ride...

This is the best video i have seen for learning how to shimmy! I seem to freeze when I go fast with the hip shimmy. It is frustrating!

That does sound frustrating especially when you want to move fast. I hope you’re able to unfreeze!!

Okay, so here's the thing. There's no such thing as an Egyptian shimmy, hip shimmy. Remember, the dance comes from the ordinary people and their social dane, not professionals and certainly not teachers. What approach is used just all depends on the skill of the individual. Not everyone has the coordination to generate that wobble.
Rakia Hassan was the one who came up with this idea of "Egyptian shimmy", which she first called, "new shimmy", because that's what her body could do. Same thing with Mona Said. Now, anatomically, it's not the knees. The knees are joints. Joints don't create movement. muscles do. It's alternating the hamstring muscles. How big it looks depends on the range of motion. Now contrast this with Wifi Abdo. She generates her shimmies from the hips themselves. Same thing if you watch the Banat Main Ghawazi. That shimmy is generated from the hips and that's why they can walk with them.
