  • Starlink Broadband in Rural Shropshire. Having lived at this address for just under 30 years, I've always suffered from poor internet speed, both with adsl dial-up (if you are old enough to remember that), and latterly Broadband.
The property is 'exchange line only' which means that it's (very old) copper cable to the fibre-enabled exchange so BT are only able to promise me a maximum of 5 mbs down. There are no plans to upgrade the connection to the small group of properties at this location.
For the last 3 years or so I've been using a 4G Modem with a Three cellular sim card. 3G signal strength is 100% but the quality and performance of data is not brilliant. I was getting up to 21 mbs but over the last 12 months that has dropped to around 7 mbs and lower. No 4G at all here, so it will be interesting when the proposed withdrawal of 3G takes place next year!
I've tried other network sims, including EE but the performance is much the same as Three.
I've been watching the development of Starlink since it was first made available in the UK and I finally decided it was the only way to get a reasonable Broadband speed.

We are near bridgnorth, local exchange is only a couple of miles away and we get 3mb down and 1mb up. I've had to resort to bonding two 4g external aerials to get 20 down and 15 up. No other service available so we are getting starlink at the end of the month. Have you noticed many "dropouts" occur? Incidentally I recently returned from a remote trek in Nepal and they had 40mb down and up. Better by far than here!

I honestly can’t remember the last time Starlink went down. When I check the app it does show loads of ‘seconds’ outage, but it’s just not noticeable in reality. I’m still very happy with it.

I too have been tracking Starling in Shropshire - We have BT ADSL for business 6Meg max as well as Airband 40Meg both of which are getting unreliable. Airband today for example has been online for 12 hours. Be interested in your SY location with the speed you are getting, I am SY4.

Hi Paul, I'm SY4 too, about half way between Shrewsbury and Oswestry and checking back the last couple of weeks or so, my maximum download was 268 mbs minimum 40mbs (doesn't get this low very often) and mostly between 100 and 200 mbs. Tested just now and it's 228 down and 13 up. Other than a very unusual period of about 3 hours the other morning, the longest it had been off was about 16 seconds. It does fluctuate as you might expect but no more buffering watching Sky catchup and my uploads to UA-cam are significantly faster. I'm very happy, the monthly sub had dropped from £89 to £75 recently and the initial kit purchase price has dropped too. I have kept my BT Broadband as it's part of a package and nothing to be saved really by not having it. Most of the time the BT router is switched off :)
