Yeah, but some challenges are extremely unfair towards certain contestants. Like the last one is pretty much impossible for that short kid Colin. It is miracle that he managed to reach number 5 even once. And the next guy did not even have to jump. Yes, I know that heavier guys have their own problems with sliding down and hanging on their hands for prolonged time and such, while this kid is extremely light, which is a huge advantage. You can't avoid some unfairness completely... but making stuff physically unreachable for some climbers is just a bit too exterme.
Btw as a first time spectator of this sport I like the male commentator and his "dumbed down" questions and simplified commentary. I can understand what he's talking about and he's getting the lady to explain stuff I want clarification on. Good job with the 2 perspective commentary!

These people are so impressive - i think they make a little change to the format though - and NOT have to have climbers spend the first 30 seconds of their run brushing chalk off holds
As a competitive climber myself, I can say that every second you look at a problem counts, even when you’re brushing holds. Climbers are always trying to come up with solutions even during the time we spend brushing. While other people can brush off holds for you, I find that most climbers I have met prefer to brush holds themselves, myself included. I can get on a route and really notice what holds are too slippery from the chalk. Although at most competitions, they will somewhat brush in between different climbers.
For the speed run section, I found it kinda weird that they are not ranked by how fast the finish. The guy with sub 6 second run was clearly the winner in that round
The bouldering route setters clearly hated that Duffy kid. There was all that babble in the interview with the Chief route setter about taking into account the various heights of the competing climbers, and then there are two back to back boulders where Duffy in particular has very minimal chance of topping it

Easily more interesting to watch than basketball or baseball. It also has a video game feel to it, without unique routes and people attempting them in different ways.
The announcing from the ESPN guy is truly an embarrassment. Meghan Martin does awesome, and is such a good representative of the sport. Why is this guy announcing with her? He needs to do some research, watch some competitions online - there are hundreds available. Learn the vocabulary, treat it like a job. ESPN, imagine an announcer for football game saying things like "The Rams thrower can't seem to finish any throws to his catchers.". This is what this sounds like to the climbers watching this coverage - if you want to grow this industry, hire expert climbers and train them to announce rather than hiring generic announcers who won't do any research on the sport they are attempting to represent.
Yeah, climbing just has too much lingo and insider info for some announcer to be rollin up like some gumby ass wannabe spraylord workin draglines on 5.9.
He's a color commentator. The point of him being there is to allow some back and forth and seemingly natural discussion with the real commentator. You don't want the color commentator to be an expert of the sport because you risk both of them using jargon that will be incomprehensible for people who just tune in and don't know the sport. Him not knowing some of the terminology and thus requiring Meghan to explain the terms she is using is exactly why this guy is there.
Imagine how he feels getting this gig? I think he did fine - Martin takes care of all the experienced climber commentary. Don't be such a snob - climbing's got enough of those.
Is Sam Farber a sport-climber? Does he know the lore of the sport? Answer = No. So why is he commentating on the sport in national competitions? Watch the IFSC comps where Charlie Bosco and Mike Langley (+guest co commentators) are light years better - because they are actual climbers. Its astonishing that US climbing has allowed the coverage of its comps to be dumbed down so much. Another issue is why no brushers in the bouldering comp? If there are no people to brush down each problem between each competitor it gives the first competitor a huge and unfair advantage.
Is Mike Tirico a former athlete? Does he know the lore of every sport? Answer = No. So why is he commentating football, baseball, golf, tennis, hockey, the Olympics. Why? He's just a guy that hasn't done any of those sports. I mean, Tirico has been hired to commentate various kinds of sports with no experience in them for decades! National television channels should be ashamed of themselves!
I watched the women’s climbing one, after I came from the bobsled crashes. Ahah I hope covid gets better so I can see all these new sports I didn’t know existed in the Olympics.
ESPN needs to get rid of Sam Farber and get an actual climber to commentate with Meghan, or just let Meghan do it by herself. Seriously, I don’t recall hearing Sam make any worthwhile comments. He does not demonstrate any knowledge of climbing whatsoever.
I don't think I've ever heard a more arrogant group than climbers in these comments. It's on ESPN. 99.9% of people watching know nothing about climbing yet if you had your way you'd alienate all of them. It's amazing you don't realize your arrogance would result in climbing never being on TV ever again.
This seems quiet ridiculous. The male announcer doesn't know much about the sport. I always hated the idea of a combined climbing because the best speedclimber are only medicore in lead an bouldering. But a ko system for a spped based competition??? WTF? I have no words for how stupid this is. You can be the second fastest speed climber and get kicked out at the beginning because you had the bad luck to compete against the fastest. It doesn't make any sense since there is no real fighting against each other as in tennis or soccer. That is so stupid. Imagine this shit in running. No we only let two athletes run at once and kick the looser of every round out. So stupid btw the winner in speed won with 7.05 seconds not the guy who set a new national record with 5.99seconds. Just so stupid
these were very similar to my thoughts.... they should seriously reconsider HOW they award placements. I understand the thrill of head to head competition, but that should simply be to get a TIME. and the TIME should decide the winner of the "speed climbing". Seriously otherwise this makes no sense and is frustrating to watch when the dude who just broke a record gets 3rd place behind a guy whose time is a full second slower.
not saying you're wrong but its not that uncommon, similar things happen in big track meets with faster people getting knocked out early. Just the way it goes
@@Coolbeansztm of course I'm not "wrong" because I was simply stating my opinion. and your comment makes no difference to my point. "just the way it goes" is not exactly a rationale there Zach. Thanks for helping share the idea tho.
yeah. Honestly the format of speed climbing is just plain dumb.. the better speed climbers can get 8th place if they accidentally false start the first race even. like one shot ko? seriously no double elimination? especially in such a short event??? why not just time trial it? why is it head to head in the first place??
To be fair, the speed bracket is determined by qualification performance so there is a system in place to prevent the fastest from starting against the second fastest and so on...it's not like they draw bracket start position out of a hat.

The speed section of the combined invitational is such a sham as it is the only one which by design gives too much room to chance. It is a competition of 3 combined sections and the athletes with top performance in these sections should have the advantage to help with their overall score.. However the top performer in the speed section just has to slip a number of times or fail to hit the buzzer properly and place really low despite their skill level..
