When Anthony reviews albums, hes looking for innovation, creativity, and a brilliant artistic direction. blink-182 basically made a pop punk nostagia feast which is great for fans like myself, but we shouldnt be shocked that Anthony didnt rate this too favorably.
Mark’s vocal chords were severely damaged during his chemotherapy and he had to see a vocal coach about getting his voice back. With that in mind this and him tour is a miracle and put this record ahead of a lot of others for me
Sound engineer for a living, huge blink fan, One More Time is possibly one of the worst mixed albums in the last 5 years. It is almost unlistenable at times.
Didn’t ever think Blink could recreate some semblance of who they last were on TOYPAJ. I do think there’s a generic quality to their songwriting, in trying to harken back to who they were. But I was pleasantly surprised to have a Blink album that I actually want to listen to in 2023.
Dissing them for masturbation jokes? You should be ashamed for calling yourself a fan of Blink. These haters are basement dwelling hermits. Album of the year.
I loved it. Best thing they’ve done since self-titled. Yet again Fantano trying too hard to be different. Anthem Part 3, Blink Wave, Bad News, all bangers ✌🏻
I give it an 8 for sure. Maybe some of it is recency bias, but Anthem Part 3 really sets the tone for how strong I feel most of the album is with some nice diverse selections like Blink Wave, Terrified, Turpentine and Bad News. Easily their strongest since Untitled (2003) almost 20 years ago. Nice to see them back on top after IMO California and Nine being complete disasters.
Neighborhoods is a 10/10 for me. So is Enema, TOYPJ and self-titled. It was after California that they over-polished things and became "cliche blink", basically becoming a legacy band that has to look back instead of forward.
Edging as the lead single didn't have me very hopeful for the album, but I was pleasantly surprised! Some genuinely fun high energy tunes. The drums while I agree a bit intense mix wise fucking rocked and I even liked the bits of synth and style departures. My biggest criticism is just that a few tracks mid way blend together a touch and just exist as like "pop punk placeholder" type tunes. But all in all I was entertained and never felt the need to pull the rip chord.
I loved it, and I understand that it's not a masterpiece, but it is fun and anthemic as you stated. Furthermore I think you might have been confusing Travis' vocal tracks on 'One More Time' for the amalgamation of the two voices. In fact Travis does a nice little bit of vocals throughout the album.
i recognize fantano doesn’t like the recent blink albums and honestly surprised he gave this a strong 5 to light 6, the criticisms were valid as a blink fan as well. i am curious what he’d give Enema of The State, TOYPAJ, Untitled and even Box Car Racer though
A strong 5 from fantano for a blink 182 album? Works for me. Totally agree that it is an improvement from their last album, also agree with the production. But for me it is all expected because since Jerry Finn ( as the 4th and very impactull member), it is impossible to reach the level of the albums enema till the self-titled.
wasn’t expecting to agree with much of mr Fantasia’s critiques but the one I most definitely do is the “radio disney pop-punk” sound of edging, or as I like to call it, “kidz bop blink”
I’ve been really enjoying the album so far, it’s been great to hear the guys back together and my band and I actually played One More Time at our most recent show last weekend (which was the week before the album came out)
I don't know, I wasn't too fazed by the heavy nostalgia on this album, though I can totally understand how it can get annoying. Considering the trajectory of the trio, I found the listen to be endearing more than anything, and it shows through the overall energetic performance on the record, regardless if some of the tracks did not hit as hard or were just drenched in clichés. Not having grown up listening to Blink, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed One More Time.
I think knowing how much has happened to the band makes the cliche's feel more applicable. I think especially with songs like "you don't know what you've got" where the message is plain and simple and heard 1,000 times before, knowing that this was written by a man who miraculously recovered from a disease that statistically should've killed him makes the cliche emo lyrics on morality actually hit like they're intended to. Like I can't imagine a song like that hitting the same by like green day.
This album follows all the other blink album trends of having a handful of songs that rock really hard and are super memorable, while the rest of the album just kind of exists to fill it. However, for long-time blink fans, this album is the best we could have hoped for with the return of the original trio and it delivers what we all wanted. It’s certainly not a groundbreaking album, and even as a longtime blink fan, I’m hard-pressed to give it more than like a 6, but I still really enjoy it. Can’t wait to see them on their tour later next year and I hope we get at least one more album with these three. The title track - One More Time - also hits hard and the music video hits even harder.
Agreed. There are some songs I love on the new album (Anthem Part 3, Dance with me, Terrified and Bad News), but alot that I just skip. Dude Ranch, Enema and TOYPAJ were albums where I hardly skipped a song. That was peak Blink for me.
I can't stand the production on this record. Otherwise decent songs are ruined by the vocals treatment and compression. They shouldn't have let Travis produce it all by himself. Dance with Me is the only banger that somewhat manages to overcome its production.
Definitely some reasonable critique for sure - Production was the worst aspect to me. Everything feels very loud and compressed to the point where the drums punchiness and walls of sound just sound jarring. As mentioned, vocals were very pitch corrected and at times it blends okay due to the wall of sound, but it feels like it's masking itself behind problems that didn't need to exist. Overall I think the album has a lot of good happening for anybody that appreciates blink - enough that it outweighs a decent amount of the bad. I think that's also just the thing of having 17 tracks - Some strikeouts with some home runs. Personally I think the production and loudness kills what could have been even better.
Ah I really liked the Boxcar throwback song Terrified. The verse reminded me of There Is and Watch the World, and the chorus reminded me of Tiny Voices. One of the only songs that didn’t feel overly produced. Oh well. At least you kind of liked the album lol.
I’m a big blink fan and was always going to love it - that being said, as with other albums I love that Melon ha critiqued, can’t ever question his call outs. The vocal correction, the writing in stages - with these bits adjusted then this album jumps up a good few points. Considering how much blink still rock live, I never leave a show worried about their vocal performances. Just give us that rawness on an album. What do you make of untitled Antony, would’ve been keen to know your opinions on that album?
@@Codgerismhonestly being a little tuned works wonders for toms voice he has a great and super unique voice but sometimes he’s so out of key that it doesn’t sound enjoyable
I might be in the minority, but I liked Neighborhoods a lot and loved Dogs Eating Dogs. I was really excited about where they were heading, then Tom quit and they been trying to recapture their past glory ever since
Blink 182 I’m not a fan of but I can’t deny these guys have good chemistry. And happy they’re just enjoying themselves as legends. And unlike MGK, they’re actual Pop Punk icons and made amongst the best pop punk records arguably the best tbh. They’re worthy of praise and success unlike MGK.
Hadnt listened to Blink forever, and put on this album. It's incredible; it exceeds expectations .. has a real nothing to lose vibe, that is missing in this genre. These guys as a trio - just as good as the stadium best rock acts of all time. Even if it is a light 6.
One of their best albums. Genuinely loved every one of the singles they released for this one. Regardless of the vocal editing, ONE MORE TIME is an all time great blink song. A few songs are pretty generic but there are some really great compositions to be heard on the full album. The closing track CHILDHOOD has synth instruments and an overall groovy tone that is outside the box for blink but sounds great. It just feels like the Blink that I love. Some really heavy angsty tracks with other slower more emotionally driven songs. My main issue with the entire album is that the songs all sound compressed as fuck. Like these songs sound terrible in my car. Idk if it was just poor production but the sound is so flat unless you have headphones on.
It’s the best album they could’ve come out with in the present day. A bit overproduced at times, yes, but still a good album that you can tell they actually had fun making.
I quite enjoyed it. Turpentine has been on my brain since iit came out. When it comes to the nostalgia I agree to the point where if it was another band I wouldn't enjoy it.
If Jerry Finn were alive this album would stand up next to all of those pre-Neighborhoods albums. This being said Travis did a pretty good job but his drums come through a little too much in the mix at times. At the end of the day there’s more to this album than can it produce a single for Gen Z (the answer to that was always no). However it’s the first time I can hear a band who actually enjoyed writing together since Enema or Take Off. This is an objectively good album to give to themselves and die hard Blink fans. I’d go 7/10 for it.
What would it take for Anthony to give a listen and an opinion about Angels and Airwaves? Id love to hear what he thinks about Tom songwriting outside of blink. At leat their albums are produced decently and i think his songwriting shines so much more there. As a fan of Angels and Anthony i need an opinion. I also would love to know what he thinks of the Box Car Racer album, i think he would probably like it a lot more than blink albums
Fantano would rip angels and airwaves apart imo, to enjoy AVA (which I do) you gotta acknowledge just how many of their songs are filler , or cringe and overproduced. Box car racer though would be great to hear his opinion, if this album got a 5-6 then BCR should realistically get 8+
@@Martin-jn1tr i think AVA has a lot of problems, but sure, i dont think he will like it, but it would be interesting to know what he thinks. Its definitely a more unique and special sound, even their newer albums (even if some sould argue they arent as good) sound decent. Specially when you compare Lifeforms from two years ago to One More Time you can see how much naturally is Lifeforms produced and in that i think theres some elements of Tom style and songwriting that shine more... Idk, i just want to hear it, thats all haha
Okay, I'll bite: on the track Childhood specifically. Anyone can make a set of lyrics sound uninteresting or shallow when said in a sardonic voice. I could repeat your entire review in a smart-ass voice, for example. Not even mentioning the drum solo on the back end is also just weird - this moment feels akin to the drum solo on The End, concluding Abbey Road. Idk just seems like you are down-playing some stuff here, mel

I'm a huge blink fan that didn't like the last two and would have rated them terribly. I like some songs here. But I agree with fantano, the things that make this a 5/10 instead out of a 7/10 is the use of the Autotune so heavily, and the use of axefx (digital modeler) instead of the mix of tube amplifiers. If Jerry Finn was alive and produced this album it would have been quite a bit better than travis producing it. Dance with me is awesome though.
This album definitely gets a big lift from my deep love of the band itself. Any other band, I don't think I'd finish it. But as is, it does have a sincerity that makes me really like it. There's definitely some fun moments on the track. Ultimately, it's definitely not as good as their - imo - legendary discography, but it's serviceable. At least it's better than where Green Day went.
the fact you wrote off anthem part 2 and terrified. those are literally the 2 biggest fan favorite songs. I can get behind the gripe on the production because they sadly lost the producer of Enema of the State, TOYPAJ & Self Titled Jerry Finn. However I honestly feel like this review will age very poorly. Because Blink 182 is a very rare gem of a band that writes music that 'music critics/reviews' have given MID REVIEWS since they came out. And yet somehow their songs and band has had one of top 5 the most successful bands by every metric you can come up with. Enema of the State is a considered a MASTERPIECE and when it came out people called it immature, 'crappy punk', that would be gone in a few years. 24 years later they are selling out arenas all across the world, bigger than they ever have been... why? 30-40 year parents are able to bond with their kids and love the same band? How cool is that? A career spanning 3 decades long and people always talking about how trash their music is... yet they can't be stopped! CRAPPY POP PUNK RULES!
Dude, chill. From a life long Blink fan this is easily an 8/10. I absolutely hated Edging when it first came out, but this album makes it sound good. You can listen straight thru and not skip any songs. Personally, I love it
Well, I gotta give him credit for not *completely* trashing it and pointing out some legitimate issues with the production and the mix (tbh no Blink record will ever sound quite as good as their classic material now that Jerry Finn’s no longer around), but c’mon, man - “Terrified” and “Anthem Part 3” are two of the best tracks on the record!!
I was surprised how much I’ve been lovin this album. Also I’m really really surprised you didn’t touch on Mark’s lyrics. Idk if he wrote his own verses, and normally I love the guy, but good lord are his lines cringey in this album. Even on songs I like I just roll my eyes. “Sharks smell blood in the water, we’re all just lambs to the slaughter.” Bruh what’re you talkin about 😂
it only took me to 1:07 to realize he dont know what he’s talking about, i felt big original Blink vibes just by the time i heard Terrified hitting the album from the top as a listening experience, i felt this album brought us back to Enema Of the State vibes, but hey, i’m one person out of millions, what do i know
Curious what score Fantano would give to Blink's classic albums (Enema, TOYPAJ, Untiled). If those are 8s or 9s then this one is definitely a 6 or 7 in my books
It is very easy to tell the difference between Tom and Mark on this album. Mark speaks and sings clearly and slightly deeper. Tom has a southern Cali accent and a raspier voice when he sings. He also still has a slight lisp but not as bad as it was when he was a teen and in his 20s. Even my 5 year old can tell their voices apart.

When Anthony reviews albums, hes looking for innovation, creativity, and a brilliant artistic direction. blink-182 basically made a pop punk nostagia feast which is great for fans like myself, but we shouldnt be shocked that Anthony didnt rate this too favorably.
i think he rated this totally based on mixing.
@@Farfarawai The album's mixing is pretty bad, ngl as a blink fan
@@Stuntmachine14 i agree its dogshit, but i feel like this shouldnt be the main priority on the rating you know
Mark’s vocal chords were severely damaged during his chemotherapy and he had to see a vocal coach about getting his voice back. With that in mind this and him tour is a miracle and put this record ahead of a lot of others for me
Bad vocals for a good reason are still bad vocals
@@Ten_Thousand_Locusts good thing I don’t think they’re bad
@@Immafuggin182 they are
@@Immafuggin182 But do you think they're actually good or is it more of "good for how damaged his vocal cords are"?
@@OneAndZer0 I think they’re good. I like this record.
I agree, but think if they had released this album in 2003 instead of what came, they would be no where as bag as they are now
Dissing them for masturbation jokes? You should be ashamed for calling yourself a fan of Blink.
These haters are basement dwelling hermits. Album of the year.
I loved it. Best thing they’ve done since self-titled.
Yet again Fantano trying too hard to be different. Anthem Part 3, Blink Wave, Bad News, all bangers ✌🏻
Terrified and Anthem Pt. 3 are some of the best songs on the album, come on Fantano
Also, Marks voice was fried from chemo, I think some pitch correction is fair. Tom has been doing it for a decade with AvA, so it’s not new.
Like for BLINK WAVE
So cool of Anthony to bring awareness to this new Cali band with a lot of upside
Like 3/10 the production makes it just unlistenable.
You can literally hear the echo and mechanical correction of each note and vocal performance.
Lol you can just tell Fantano just doesn't like Blink-182's music in general. Classic or otherwise.
Overproduced it was with cliche lyrics across the board, but there were some gems too. Bad News and Turpentine stood out
bro really disrespected Terrified
I actually genuinely really like this album. Which is funny because I have not liked any of their albums since their self titled
Neighborhoods is a 10/10 for me. So is Enema, TOYPJ and self-titled. It was after California that they over-polished things and became "cliche blink", basically becoming a legacy band that has to look back instead of forward.
@@ewippel7446 I would have to agree on enema and toypj but I'm lukewarm on neighborhoods. Maybe I'll have to give it another serious listen!
Didn’t even mention the best song from the album, Turpentine
Blink-182: breathes.
Fantano: I don't like this.
He just did a Green Day tier list so maybe a Blink tier list is right around the corner.
I thought Neighborhoods was really well produced
@@MusicJunkie37neighborhoods is a hidden gem of an album. it gets better every year which is crazy
indeed
Also it is almost completely produced by Travis who loves to put his drumming in front. Which muddies the rest unless you have an actual equipment.
it’s literally album of the year
No, that award goes to Cattle Decapitation or Sleep Token
@@eaglesandowls nah
wasn’t expecting to agree with much of mr Fantasia’s critiques but the one I most definitely do is the “radio disney pop-punk” sound of edging, or as I like to call it, “kidz bop blink”
Terrified is a great song
If Fantano gives Blink a 5 that means it's closer to a 7 or 8.
Their recent live shows have been full of autotune as well, but it kind of works in a live setting. Keeps Tom in tune at least.
I was really excited about where they were heading, then Tom quit and they been trying to recapture their past glory ever since
Bro actually shat on Terrified, it is such a banger, tsk tsk tsk.
I'll take a five, goddamn. That's like a 12/10 in my book lmao, did not think he'd wear anything that wasn't a Red Flannel.
Hadnt listened to Blink forever, and put on this album. It's incredible; it exceeds expectations .. has a real nothing to lose vibe, that is missing in this genre. These guys as a trio - just as good as the stadium best rock acts of all time. Even if it is a light 6.
Lose vibe? Its as over-produced as all their recent albums.
Just listen to the music and lyrics man. It sounds good. Fuck whatever quality... Jesus bunch nerds
Definitely not one of their best.
@@tristen_grant to me, and to them, it is. So…
It’s the best album they could’ve come out with in the present day. A bit overproduced at times, yes, but still a good album that you can tell they actually had fun making.
I quite enjoyed it. Turpentine has been on my brain since iit came out. When it comes to the nostalgia I agree to the point where if it was another band I wouldn't enjoy it.
I love Turpentine!
Anthony blinked 182 times to control his tears of joy.
I know I am super late, but happy that you called out the unpleasant autotune treatment.
Calipornia girls
Calipornication
Hotel Calipornia
Calipornia Gurls
The ole ole ole in ‘Dance with Me” is a tribute to the Ramones
The fact he didn't care for Terrified makes me think he wouldn't like boxcar racer, let's be honest many of those bcr songs sounded kind of similar
@@paradigm2841 iirc Terrified was originally quite literally an unreleased box car racer song lol
Angels & Airwaves showed me Tom is a better songwriter than he is given credit for.
Boxcar racer is still the best any of these dudes have ever done.
One more time being the least favorite track on here is a crime
Okay, I'll bite: on the track Childhood specifically. Anyone can make a set of lyrics sound uninteresting or shallow when said in a sardonic voice. I could repeat your entire review in a smart-ass voice, for example. Not even mentioning the drum solo on the back end is also just weird - this moment feels akin to the drum solo on The End, concluding Abbey Road. Idk just seems like you are down-playing some stuff here, mel
blink 182 getting a 5 was not on my bingo card this year
Its clear that Melon just is not a fan of Pop Punk, and its ok.
However his opinion of this album has caused me to grow a third arm and now Ill be checked One More Time, thanks Melon
i mean he did give a 9 to jeff rosenstock a couple months ago. you should listen to that album if u haven't :]
@@azuretone8575 compared to Green Days latest albums, to Blinks, the real legends of Pop Punk, its just obvious Melon isnt a fan of the legends and pioneers of Pop Punk, and its ok.
@@SheriffCheesei think he liked a lot of green day AND blinks earlier stuff, and even though i liked this album quite a bit, it’s clear both bands have gotten progressively worse over time… also he gives jeff rosenstock consistently great scores
@@no1aine that I do NOT disagree at all, as sad as that is.
He's even Unfair with Jeff, like, he gave worry an 8 that's a 10 no cap
I'm a huge blink fan that didn't like the last two and would have rated them terribly. I like some songs here. But I agree with fantano, the things that make this a 5/10 instead out of a 7/10 is the use of the Autotune so heavily, and the use of axefx (digital modeler) instead of the mix of tube amplifiers. If Jerry Finn was alive and produced this album it would have been quite a bit better than travis producing it.
Dance with me is awesome though.
just saw blink at when we were young and i can confirm that they’re humour does still hit
Agreed!!
We get it, Melon, you gave it a 5 cuz they told you to blink 182 times.
the fact you wrote off anthem part 2 and terrified. those are literally the 2 biggest fan favorite songs.
Terrified is so awesome, I love that melon always hates the songs I love
They need to record stripped back or produce stripped back. Just strip it back. Raw. Live. Punky. Forget all the tech. Go analog. Thanks
“Sharks smell blood in the water, we’re all just lambs to the slaughter.” Bruh what’re you talkin about 😂
Fantano is the type of guy to call a joke about masturbation immature
it only took me to 1:07 to realize he dont know what he’s talking about, i felt big original Blink vibes just by the time i heard Terrified hitting the album from the top as a listening experience, i felt this album brought us back to Enema Of the State vibes, but hey, i’m one person out of millions, what do i know
I would really like to see you go back through the discography. Would definitely be more enjoyable than the Limp Bizkit ranking anyway
Curious what score Fantano would give to Blink's classic albums (Enema, TOYPAJ, Untiled). If those are 8s or 9s then this one is definitely a 6 or 7 in my books
Fantano has commented on how he likes Enema, a few times actually. I wonder if he considers it a classic/10
I was pretty happy with it. Terrified having that Boxcar sound was damn cool
It’s an confirmed unused BCR song !
