When I played this for the first time last year I was surprised at how difficult it was. Even with a guide it's hard to get to the correct room every time to trap all the augers. On the bright side those credits that play the night trap theme are pretty awesome.
+DubiousGamingOnline I played for a few hours and eventually was able to get to the end of the game, but missed capturing one of the vampire family so I still lost. Yeah, even with a guide it's hard. There are some very quick switches needed in between rooms and I always ended up missing at least a couple augurs.
Great review, although it may have been beneficial to mention that the footage for this game was originally shot back in 1987 (only about a year after Diff'rent Strokes ended). The game was originally planned for a 1988 release on the ill-fated Hasbro "Nemo / Control-Vision" VHS-based game system. When plans for that system fell apart, the footage gathered dust on a shelf for a few years until Digital Pictures picked it up, ported it, and released as a launch title for the North American version of the Sega CD. Yes, it's true that the 32-bit incarnations of the game look much better than the Sega CD version, but I'd be curious to see the original footage as I believe it was shot at 480i on NTSC video. (I don't believe they would've had the budget to shoot the footage on 35mm film). All the digitized versions that came out in the early-mid 90s were presented in compressed 240p video quality or even worse. Lastly, it also would've been interesting to see how a humble VHS system could handle multiple streams of video at once(!)
Actually I think it was shot on 35mm, if my memory serves me correctly (from looking at behind the scenes pics and vids). Basically the NEMO version was designed so that four different videos could play simultaneously, and you could switch between them. They would occupy different sets of scan lines and play at a lower resolution, like if you recorded it in EP mode to fit more footage onto the tape. It was an interesting concept, but I can understand why it never saw the light of day.
I really enjoy watching your reviews. To the point, matter-of-fact. Includes all the info a person needs to know....with a friendly and calm voice. Good job and thank you for sharing :)

@@123OGNIAN If I remember correctly the only real difference between the two is the 32X version has improved visual quality and higher video resolution including more colors. In regards to gameplay there is no difference and no added content to the 32X.

1 game i havn't seen anyone talk about is skies of Arcadia. It is 1 of my favorite rpgs that i played on the Gamecube. It originally came out on the Sega Saturn.
I never owned a Sega CD, so I never got to play this myself, but a friend of mine did and we played it when it first came out (we had cheat times to easily beat it). I remember all the controversy this game and Mortal Kombat created which led to the ESRB, and Nintendo stating that Night Trap would NEVER come to their systems! I bought the Limited Run Collector's Edition for Switch when it was announced just so I could have it on a Nintendo system. Still a tough game to play without cheats!!
2:45 Actually, as I understand, most of Night Trap was filmed and recorded in '87 by Digital Pictures and meant for Hasbro's NEMO console(which connected to VCRs). I believe some of the acting may have been recorded in '92 e.g the part where Commander Sims names his team the SEGA Control Attack Team(Sega didn't become involved with the game till about '91). But a lot of the game struck me as seeming quite '80s, especially the theme song. Doesn't Dana Plato still have her Different Strokes haircut? :)

Hey! What do you think; is Night Trap worth collection value on the Switch, from LimitedRunGames? I'm trying to expand my collecting and thought I'd ask. Still digging your videos! :) Thanks.
I was thinking the same thing. I've never played it. I just like what Limited Run is doing with the collectors edition. It has a video cassette of all the scenes and some other really cool items for a pretty good price. But, I'm just a guy who's refused to get rid of my childhood and just realizing that i want to start adding to my collections. I'd like the things I collect to be of value (at least what I paid for it when I bought it), but I just don't know where to start or how to do that. Sorry for the loaded comment :) and thanks for getting back to me so quick. You're on top of your gig!
LOL OMG I can't believe you reviewed this game. Talk about suffering for you art. I was a dumb 15 year old kid when this game came out and even I knew not to touch this abomination.
I played this one quite a bit back in the '90s, but mostly via the 32X CD version. It was unique for the time, but like you said there are a lot of issues with the mechanics. As Five Nights at Freddy's has showed us, similar gameplay setups can in fact work if they are implemented correctly. I guess the biggest thing is the integration of the story. Watch it, and you lose! Or play the right way and succeed, but miss out on most of the story. Double Switch on the Sega CD was the same way and both that and Night Trap basically require memorization to get through them successfully.
+Gameplay and Talk Yep, it was disappointing to learn that if I wanted to progress I had to miss 95% of the story. I ended up finding a good supercut of the story segments to watch.
The theme song bit was fun. Like you, I want to like the game for the cheesiness, but it just gets dragged down by too many things to really win me to its side.
When is this game coming officially to the PS4? Spring has came and gone, are they waiting for the fall to unleash this jewel of a game? Can you at least pre order it?
recently started messing with some sega cd.. ever play wirehead? its kinda interesting but the trial and error typical fmv stuff can get a little nuts. its still worth checking out and it has chickens drinking beer in it..
Yeah someone else pointed out this was filmed in the '80s and intended for this strange pre-CD-ROM console that used VHS tapes to store the film clips(called the Control-Vision or something). So that console was never completed(maybe because someone saw how CD-ROM would make FMV games play much more efficiently), but the film was preserved. There was another FMV game by the same company, Sewer Shark, filmed in the '80s and shelved until CD-ROM became a thing in the US. I wonder if players noticed a slight datedness of the games even back then?
When the SegaCd came out, the whole FMV thing was a new and interesting novelty in gaming. It seemed like this could be the next big thing. I know I was really excited about it. But after the new wore off, everyone realized it was hard to make interesting gameplay from video clips, and that digitized graphics tended to be kind of stiff and clunky when used in place of sprites. So maybe this wasn't the future of gaming, but I still had fun with Night Trap and will always have a fondness for cheesy FMV games. Like yourself, I had a bit of trouble following everything and still saving everyone. What I did was write down the time each time something important happened in the game. It took a bit of time, but eventually I had a top notch home-made strategy guide for this game and could beat it with ease. One thing I never could do was sing the Night Trap song as good as you though. And that commander guy was a total jerk. He was grumpy even when the game started and you hadn't done anything wrong yet!
+Galactic Zombie Making your own walkthrough, that's dedication! After trying it on my own a few times I looked up a walkthrough that had time stamps for every augur attack. I think the games that best use the FMV format are the Tex Murphy series.
0:57 I read that right, didn’t I??? Hasbro......produced this game.....they’ve been in the gaming industry longer than I thought. Also there is a game I know of that has you utilize surveillance cameras.....it’s called Five Nights at Freddy’s! I can see where Scott Cawthon got the inspiration for the game
Just got the Retroad second series Mega Drive. So far it plays my China Genesis Everdrive and my power base mini works on it with my China Master Everdrive. It will not accept the CD unit but I ordered the Mega Everdrive pro so I think I can play CD games that way. All in HD. Ali Express Rocks and so Does Retroad. They have a S plus SNES handheld that has a bunch of adapters. Even a Gameboy Color thing like a Super Gameboy.
I started watching this reviewing thinking that your biggest problems would be the shallow gameplay or the fuzzy video and then you named the exact problem I had with the game; You can't spend any time watching the video clips if you expect to get very far in the game. I mean, watching the video clips is the whole appeal of the game and you don't even get to really do that! It's ironic that the image of the daughter the chief shows you is happening while he's talking.
+lurkerrekrul Yup. I like that Night Trap's gameplay is a little more involved than most FMV games of the time like Wirehead or Time Gal, where you just watch a scene then pressing a button. However, it just doesn't work when the gameplay mechanic makes you miss all the scenes.
+Cannot be Tamed Plus there's really no indication of exactly where the Augurs need to be in each room to get caught in the traps, so you usually just end up mashing the button though the scene and hope you hit it at the right time. I think back when I played this on a friend's borrowed system, that I used a controller with a turbo function and just held the button down. Even with a walkthrough I didn't get very far. Of course now, you can find compilation videos on UA-cam showing all the scenes, but that wasn't possible back then. :)
hey Pam I played that game before and it's really confusing because of vampire groups know as augers which they really don't look like vampires and keeps popping out of nowhere I often get lots of miss since I kept pressing buttons to change screens to screens to see these burglars like augers coming out or not it's so random to set a trap for them and codes changes differently especially if the players don't pay attention to see what's happening then they have to changing codes randomly it's so difficult to play that full motion games like night trap for example Pam
ok even I guide such as gamefaqs I frequently go there on website still confusing and imagined if they made remake of night trap hd which they always use on older games such as sonic cd hd which I believe I seen it before and if they do make a remade of night trap they should do redevelop such as rewind, save games, save states this will be much easier to catch augers in no time Pam, i'm waiting for a night trap hd to download the roms or iso whichever they called since i'm not a video game collectors Pam
Great review. pretty much have every version of this game besides PC. I see what looks like snatcher behind you on sega cd. if you do have it. that's totally awesome
I like Night Trap and I've got most versions of it, but yeah, story scenes happening at the same time as capture scenes was a real drag. The game actively punishes you for trying to watch the best bits. The lack of randomness and replayability are issues too. As it was originally designed with a tape based console in mind I can see why all the video plays out in a linear fashion, but that could have been at least partially revised for disc based consoles. Not completely, as some capture scenes and story scenes are connected, but some capture scenes could have been randomised somewhat. For an old FMV game with jumping between multiple characters/scenes and replayability, Psychic Detective is far superior... and a little weird.
Ahh good ol Night Trap... I remember this game as a kid, had it for the Sega CD. I remember how much outrage for this game there was and I could never understand why. Sure it’s a horror game but only in the lightest sense, the gore is nonexistent and the monsters are well wearing trash bags. Mortal Kombat I could sorta see where they were coming from cause the fatalities but night trap seemed like they were really stretching it. Though I do remember I rarely played it cause all of the timed gameplay and the changing color codes always meant I would get lost and lose too many characters.
I remember buying this game at Funcoland (Gamestop) when I was about 12 years old,and I absolutely hated it. I couldn't even figure out how to play this game. I remember finding to be extremely frustrating. ..... Nice singing by the way! 😉 You have a great voice
Great review. I am also a sucker for FMV in older games and it was a huge selling point for the Sega CD. Shame this was one of the many that was all shine and lacked in the actual gameplay department. If you have not reviewed it already, I would love to see one for Crusader of Centry (Soleil in Europe) for the Genesis. A seriously underrated RPG that was better than Zelda and Shining force in my opinion.
@@Cannotbetamed1 It’s pretty nice, they even added some scenes that were cut in the original along with some behind the scenes videos, the congress hearings and even an unreleased DP game called Scene of the Crime. It’s even on Nintendo Switch, and I think I remember a Nintendo CEO saying that this game will never be on a Nintendo console. “Yeah, about that” you could say.
That girl in the purple bra was in different strokes! Finally somebody reviewed this game and I can add it to would play if I had it but I didn’t so I couldn’t list.
I finished this on SEGA CD back in the day by cheating. I wrote down the times and camera you had to be on. I don't remember how it ended, but I do remember it made no sense. The continuity was off. Not sure if there was only one "route" to the end. RIP Dana Plato.
LOL. I heard a lot about this game. I never played it though. I'd have to get a Genesis and the Sega CD attachment. Maybe I'd have to get the 32X too. Not sure. Plus the game. May be a while before I get to play it. But I do love old retro games.
SegaCDUniverse yeah, it would work better, except the closest dunkin donuts is in OKC (2 hours away) i have no idea why we can't get one. guess krispy kreem asserted their dominance her instead.
The only way I got thru this game was with a notepad and pen, me and the girl next door writing down the exact time and location of each capture so that next time we could get them all and go a bot further. It's the only way I know anybody played thru this successfully.
That Night Trap game that you're holding looks different from the one I have. Mine comes in a red outer cardboard box (if I remember correctly). I never really understood the controversy of this game. It's not even THAT bad. All those ogs (or oggs) do is put that thingy around the girls neck (in the bathroom) and she screams as they drag her away. Not like it showed them rip her apart or take her clothes off. LOL! And I wrote that before I heard you say almost the same thing. Hehe. My biggest complaint about this game was how hard it was to get the traps to work. Like, split-second timing. And even then, it sometimes didn't work.
+Jay M I don't have the cardboard box for Night Trap, it's just in a dvd case with printed artwork. I always got really frustrated when I didn't catch the code change happening and then all my traps would fail until I figured out the right one.
It was best know for Sega CD because Joe Lieberman. The congressional hearings were perhaps more cheesy than the game. Watch the Mortal Kombat footage by congress. Nintendo was favored but lost when Sega reps held up the super scope 6 during the hearings. Interesting times.
I had interest in this game "until" I researched that it doesn't have a pillow fight and lost interest. Slumber Party Massacre II has an epic one that everyone should watch. Good vocal pitch at the beginning of your video 😁
@@Cannotbetamed1 So it does have a lot of strong points and the cool factor of being endorsed by Sega 😎 I'll probably get a LRG copy for switch sometime and forgive the non inclusion of an epic girl on girl pillow battle 😔
Sega CD was a bad purchase for me, I ended up selling mine (though I kinda wish I kept it now just to have one still) because all the games seemed to suck or be ports of a game that was already on cartridge. I remember some game called Road Avenger I think where it was basically a racing game, but you controlled it like you're doing a bunch of quick time events. Somehow it had OK reviews which is what prompted me to buy it but I thought it was terrible.
Yeah, there are a number of games like that where it's basically a quick time event, or even worse, a QTE where you don't know what the right input is and have to guess. If you fail you have to start all over. Time Gal and Wirehead both do that.
Leave it to Congress to find any of this bad. I can't even watch it with a straight face, but then again, I'm pretty sure no one then did either. The implementation of the ESRB was partially due to this game, as well as others. Night Trap is nothing anyone should have taken seriously. It's just as silly as I remember from when I had that console. Also RIP Dana Plato.
The worst thing is that the people railing against the game in congress had obviously never even seen the gameplay. Their whole concept of the game's purpose was incorrect.
🎭 AudioXVNVX 🎭 seriously, sticks so far up their asses, you could see it in their mouths. Was mortal kombat already out? Cause if you wanna talk about *real* violence!
I think that version is actually quite improved since you can see when there's something going on in each monitor rather than having to constantly cycle between them.
@@Cannotbetamed1 exactly... In the option you can choose if you want to see the retro perspective of the camera (which you can't see any movement at all) or choose the new one where you can see all movement from each camera. But I'm satisfied with the end results 😊
I remember Sega Mega CD as it was an add on for the sega mega drive and 32 x. And Sega did a few of these interactive games and the best one they ever did was TomCat Alley a game about F/14 pilots giving the player choices that result in the games effect of gameplay it was sooo addictive and fun I loved it but Night Trap was not fun. Like I said Sega only released a short amount of mega CD games and 32X games bet one hands down was Tomcat Alley on Mega CD and Starcraft on 32X.
This is one of the hardest games I ever played and beat on the Sega CD

But, I'm just a guy who's refused to get rid of my childhood and just realizing that i want to start adding to my collections. I'd like the things I collect to be of value (at least what I paid for it when I bought it), but I just don't know where to start or how to do that.
Sorry for the loaded comment :) and thanks for getting back to me so quick. You're on top of your gig!
LOL OMG I can't believe you reviewed this game. Talk about suffering for you art. I was a dumb 15 year old kid when this game came out and even I knew not to touch this abomination.
I thought it was interesting.
Hi! I'm Maywither and I'm here to hear Pam talk about retro video games! 🙆♀️
When is this game coming officially to the PS4? Spring has came and gone, are they waiting for the fall to unleash this jewel of a game? Can you at least pre order it?
I think it's releasing in August sometime. Only from Limited Run Games - no preorders.
Hey were you lucky enough to buy a copy of "Night Trap"? Nice Sega Saturn collection in the back! =)
also worth mentioning this features troubled ex-child star Dana Plato RIP
great review thx
+Jamie Tanner Thanks! I didn't know a whole lot about Dana Plato, Diff'rent Strokes was a little bit before my time.
recently started messing with some sega cd.. ever play wirehead? its kinda interesting but the trial and error typical fmv stuff can get a little nuts. its still worth checking out and it has chickens drinking beer in it..
+BenevolentDick No, I haven't played Wirehead, but I know some about it. I'll keep an eye out for it.
Pam your awesome! Please tell me you review old games? Review Double Space
What is Double Space?
I'm sorry I meant Double Switch with Corey Haim. Sega CD
ua-cam.com/video/XoXpH5GWVKU/v-deo.html
Awesome channel!! Subscribed!! what a nice video, I wish I could have played it haha
I still have my original copy of Night Trap..wish I had kept all my systems too.
So what was that "weird thing" that was a part of Sara's father's collection?
Another great review! :)
+Logan Romkey@UltraGameRoom Thank you!
Your just awesome.. ! Love what your doing!
Thanks!
I was almost 11 when this came out. I’ll admit I was quite intrigued… The big deal they made about it just made me want to play it more lol.
I just noticed that the commander-guy's holding the actual real life game controller. lol
So funny.
+Lord JS Yeah and when you lose he pulls the wire out of it. :)
+Cannot be Tamed
One of my friends has made a parody of the opening scene where the commander explains the mission.
Really waiting to try this on switch this will be perfect halloween game this year;D
I have this for my sega cd collection, never played for more than a few minutes
0:57 I read that right, didn’t I??? Hasbro......produced this game.....they’ve been in the gaming industry longer than I thought. Also there is a game I know of that has you utilize surveillance cameras.....it’s called Five Nights at Freddy’s! I can see where Scott Cawthon got the inspiration for the game
Corpse Killer has a 25th anniversary release it's a good to play if you're into zombie games/movies
The sceen around 5:00 kind of sounds like dentists from hell.
Controversial in the early 90s, yes. And, 25 years later, its on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
I used to play this when I was 11 with my friend it was scary but as a 21 year old the deaths are creepily hilarious
+lurkerrekrul There's a meter on the screen that turns red when the Augurs are in the right spot.
+Cannot be Tamed That would have helped. :)
As I recall, he didn't give me any of the manuals, just the discs and some Genesis cartridges.
hey Pam I played that game before and it's really confusing because of vampire groups know as augers which they really don't look like vampires and keeps popping out of nowhere I often get lots of miss since I kept pressing buttons to change screens to screens to see these burglars like augers coming out or not it's so random to set a trap for them and codes changes differently especially if the players don't pay attention to see what's happening then they have to changing codes randomly it's so difficult to play that full motion games like night trap for example Pam
+Enrique Rodriguez They're so easy to miss. I had to use a guide to make it to the end.
ok even I guide such as gamefaqs I frequently go there on website still confusing and imagined if they made remake of night trap hd which they always use on older games such as sonic cd hd which I believe I seen it before and if they do make a remade of night trap they should do redevelop such as rewind, save games, save states this will be much easier to catch augers in no time Pam, i'm waiting for a night trap hd to download the roms or iso whichever they called since i'm not a video game collectors Pam
Enrique Rodriguez There was a kickstarter for an HD remake last year, but it failed. :(
Oh well Pam
Enjoyed the video, nice review!
+Bad GraFx Gamers Thanks!
Great review. pretty much have every version of this game besides PC. I see what looks like snatcher behind you on sega cd. if you do have it. that's totally awesome
+Jason Auxier I did have Snatcher (I've got a review and a playthrough of it up), but it's been traded away :(
+Cannot be Tamed Hopefully you got something nice in return. As snatcher is a pretty valuable game
Psychic Detective is pretty cool. I played through it once but want to see other paths.
The changing colour codes are an awful design decision.
damn!. that is one hell of a career!.
+DeathBringer Zen I'll keep an eye out for Crusader of Centry. I haven't played it before, but I'm a big RPG fan.
Have you played the remake yet?
No
@@Cannotbetamed1 It’s pretty nice, they even added some scenes that were cut in the original along with some behind the scenes videos, the congress hearings and even an unreleased DP game called Scene of the Crime.
I don't think writing things down is cheating. I don't know any other way you'd finish it.
@@Cannotbetamed1 I have to agree with You. Happy New Year!
Awesome 😇
LOL. I heard a lot about this game.
I never played it though.
I'd have to get a Genesis and the Sega CD attachment.
Maybe I'd have to get the 32X too. Not sure.
Plus the game. May be a while before I get to play it.
But I do love old retro games.
Joel Seymour Now you can get it on PS4.
I prefer Double Switch, but also love Night Trap. Cool to find another fmv cheese lover. Great video Pam.
+SegaCDUniverse I just picked up Double Switch this weekend, should hopefully play it soon.
+SegaCDUniverse SEGA CD!!!! lol. i love running into you on other channels. its like seeing a friend at starbucks :)
+K. Xантингтон a Dunkin Donuts OK? X D
SegaCDUniverse
yeah, it would work better, except the closest dunkin donuts is in OKC (2 hours away) i have no idea why we can't get one. guess krispy kreem asserted their dominance her instead.
@Cannot be Tamed Is that your monster in the girls closet?
The only way I got thru this game was with a notepad and pen, me and the girl next door writing down the exact time and location of each capture so that next time we could get them all and go a bot further. It's the only way I know anybody played thru this successfully.
I don't see any other way it could be completed.
It does seem like there should be a pillow fight. There are pajama chats and a song and dance party though.
@@Cannotbetamed1 So it does have a lot of strong points and the cool factor of being endorsed by Sega 😎 I'll probably get a LRG copy for switch sometime and forgive the non inclusion of an epic girl on girl pillow battle 😔
To anyone interested, this is like 12 bucks on the switch. Or if you don’t have one, steam has it too.
Sims looks like a younger Simon from The Walking Dead.
3DO need a closer look
Mortal Kombat and Night Trap 2 games that changed the gaming industry =)
More FMV reviews please =)
+Unboxing Gamer Fore sure! I love FMV and I've got a bunch more to play.
+Cannot be Tamed '
Cool! I saw Corpse Killer at the game store, should of bought it but it was $24.99. It did have the case and book though
This game has not aged well... but still getting the switch limited anniversary version :)
The new edition does improve it somewhat.
Theme by S.C.A.T.man John
Just awesome ...i had that silly game back in the day.. I understand just push button.. But at that time it was rocking!.. Keep it up 👧!!
i can't believe this campy game helped create the ESRB smh the suits in office need to get out waaay more
🎭 AudioXVNVX 🎭 seriously, sticks so far up their asses, you could see it in their mouths. Was mortal kombat already out? Cause if you wanna talk about *real* violence!
It was banned in Australia.
Neva really got to play this game was to young when it came out I heard it was 1of the games to start the rating system for mature gamers
+Krishon Mathis Yes, this and Mortal Kombat caused a lot of fuss.
I wish it had a sequel
Holy crap! I win a Sega CD auction by chance and look into sega cd reviews and who do i find? PAM!!! ^_^
I know it stinks... but, I want to playthrough it once... just once. I need to look and see if there is a modern way to play it.
scat mission, really??
I bought the game on the anniversary edition on ps4. It's not perfect but I love it 😊😊❤️❤️
I think that version is actually quite improved since you can see when there's something going on in each monitor rather than having to constantly cycle between them.
Poor Dana Plato.
You won me over....:)
I remembered Sega cd scared me
Looks pretty cheesy? Thanks for the review.
Pamelon
I have this for my ps4.. as well as my Sega CD lol
@0:57 What imbecile responsible for giving the team a title based off of HUMAN EXCREMENT????
