    Madrid Metro is amazing!
If you are still in Madrid, try to make it to the Chamberi Ghost Metro Museum. Unfortunately it was closed when I was there last year.

The older metro trains seen in the extra footage look nice. Interesting how they don't use an overhead wire for power in the tunnels. Instead it's an overhead rail. Also it's nice how they have some museum-like features such as the historic station or the historic vehicles as part of their Metro system.

    Rolling stock details
    Narrow profile:
    - Series 2000, this series has two sub-series, A and B, in terms of electrical equipment and exterior design. The first sub-series A is called "panda" (named after a Seat car that had a boxy design), very reliable but really "box-like". The second sub-series B has a more fluid and round design, and for that reason it's called "bubble". Both sub-series were built between 1985 and 1998 by CAF, run in 4 to 6 car formations and have a DC pulsing thyristor drive. Series A run on line 1 while series B run on line 5.
    - Series 3000, these trains were introduced after the renewal of line 3 was finished. They have crossable gangway sections, and for that reason these trains are called "boa". They were built in the early 2000s by CAF, run in 4 to 6 car formations, and have a GTO or IGBT CAF VVVF drive. They run on lines 2,3,4,5 and the R shuttle line.
    Wide profile:
-Series 5000, it is currently the oldest rolling stock in Madrid. It was the last series built with a square design (spanish were more into aesthetics rather than reliability). It has countless sub-series, all of which have only slight design variations. Built between 1974 and 1993 by CAF, they run in 6 car formations and use the DC pulsing thyristor drive. They currently run on line 9 and occasionally on line 6.
-Series 6000, is another train in the "boa" family. It has the gangway sections, LED panels, and a very suburban-like interior. Built in 1998 and 1999 by CAF, they run in 4 or 6 car formations, and use CAF IGBT drive. They do occasional service runs on line 9.
-Series 7000 and 9000, they are the first train not to be built by CAF, they were built by Ansaldo Breda (now Hitachi Rail Italy), and the first train to feature a full "boa" layout. The differecne between the two series are safety features, better disabled access and better brakes. They were built in the mid-2000s by Ansaldo Breda, run in 3 to 6 cars, and use the GTO Ansaldo drive with different tones sometimes. They are currently running on lines 7 and 10 and occasionally on lines 6 and 9.
-Series 8000, another train in the "boa" family. They are the first rolling stock to use regenerative braking to return power. They were built between 2002 and 2009, run in 3 to 6 car formations and use GTO or IGBT CAF drives. They currently run on lines 8, 11, 12 with rush hour support on lines 9 and 10.
-Series 8400, they are a derivation of the 8000 series. It only has minor changes. Built since 2010 by CAF, they run in 6 car formations and use IGBT CAF drive. They run on line 6.

the 2000 series are equipped with asynchronous motor controlled by current source inverter (thyristor SCR) and for the 3000 series, igbt are used

At first glance it appeared that the first metro station looked like a genuine catalan vault construction but on closer inspection I started to doubt my first assumption and think it’s probably a reinforced concrete vault cladded with tiles. Real catalan vaults are a quite fashinating type of vault construction, very different from the more tradional ribbed vaults that you see in gothic architecture. Gaudi was a master in vault construction. Have you also visited the Sagadra famila? It is still under construction for more then a 100 years!

I find it somewhat ridiculous new extensions are there own separate line that requires an interchange. Sure, demand is lower there, but maybe some trains could just turn back early instead of being split?

I want to go to Bucharest and Tibilisi, but I see many posts onliine about aggressive guards in the metro not liking photographers with DSLR's, and that kind of scares me off from going there.

@@antonv. As of 1st June 2018, Tashkent Metro is officially allowed photography and filming but you have to wait till the new circle line opens (probably in December 2019). Even worse is Baku Metro, sometimes police will take away your camera if you get caught photographing or filming. I don't get why public metros or transport prohibit photography and filming. Moscow Metro prohibited filming but not photography which doesn't make sense whatsoever, I film without getting busted even I got busted 2 times for filming.

@@elevatorsinrussia2597 Baku metro looks beautiful, its a pitty they have such restrictive rules in place there. Do you really know someone who got their camera taken by the police in Baku or its just rumours?
Regarding Moscow metro, what did the guards typically do when they caught you filming, just tell you to stop or something else too?

    • @elevatorsinrussia2597

@@antonv. Nope, probably rumors. Moscow Metro, they asked why am I filming while filming the elevator and a stupid passenger while filming is officially allowed asked me have you got permission to videotape which is not right and he had no right to ask me that whatsoever. As of June 2018, filming is officially allowed.
