Honest opinion from a German native speaker and professional German teacher: Sandra Bullock: Shouldn't be in the list because she is a native speaker. Her German has become a little bit rusty after living in the USA for decades, that's why she confuses some articles and words, but she is still fluent. Prince Charles: He's obviously reading. Due to his accent I'd say he probably knows some German, but he's not fluent. I estimate that his real language level is B1. Prince William: He just memorized two sentences, I bet he does not speak German at all. Leonardo DiCaprio: His vocabulary is very basic and his grammar is quite bad. His German is not better than A2. Paul McCartney: He just remembers a few phrases he learned at school... He does certainly not speak German very well (probably not even A1). Johnny Depp: remembers some random phrases, same as Paul McCartney => A0 Gene Simmons: Hard to judge, he simply did not say enough to get a rating
Sandy Bullock's mother is GERMAN, hello!!!! She grew up speaking it, and she was born and lived in German speaking countries for the first 12 years. German is essentially her first language. There are no surprises here.

I think Leonardo DiCaprio would count more as a heritage speaker, because it's something from his childhood. He is obviously very familiar with the language, even if he only speaks a bit. I don't think A2 is appropriate in this case.

True. Sandra Bullock is the only one who is (reasonably) fluent (with the vocabulary of a 12 year old) and with a great accent, Leonardo Di Caprio can get by in a conversation with a reasonably good accent but low vocabulary, you can hear Prince Charles has probably learned some German when he was younger as part of his royal education and traditional ties between the Royals and Germany but his speech was notably scripted, same with his son, and the rest could just say some memorized words and phrases but not speak.
@@angelsjoker8190 Actually, Charles is fluent as well. Guess he learned from his father and got a very strict education. As he doesn't practice that often, he is slower. But besides the "r" his pronunciation is pretty close to high German like from the 50's or so. When he talks longer, at some words the British accent comes through, but more irregular. Like in one word he hits the sound and in another it has a British accent. But well, in Sandra's speech I also hear the American accent. You can hear that she uses German more often and she is a very talkative person in general. But both are on a high level of German. For William: not sure, as I don't have any example of him in mind where he is speaking longer. I would guess he has a solid education in German, but barely ever used it in his life. Would expect him to be able to have a free talk in German, but with some flaws and strong accent. For Leo: He obviously practiced with his grandma, but seems to have a medium level of German. Same seems to go for Gene. The rest picked up some German at school or by friends but don't really seem to speak.

Before that, it had its original german name house "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha" which succeeded the name "house of Hanover" after Queen Victoria died in 1901. So, the english monarchy has german roots, and Charles and William speaking german may not be such a big surprise.
DiCaprio is a hard-working actor. He pulls off accents well, even the "Rhodesian" accent in Blood Diamond. For German in this instance, I felt like DiCaprio was dragging his speech a little, for example "dabei", he dragged the "da" a little longer than natural. Overall, great pronunciation but still the cadence was a little off
2:23 ofc Charles has been taught German. however, compared to his father it is lacking a bit. he is very slow and speaks like someone who received a very formal education (private tutors?) but doesn't use the language apart from some official occasions. his son William probably received even less eduation in German. you know the expectations are low when you watch William receiving applause for just getting the greeting words right. in official speaking engagements the introductory greeting is something very basic and William grew up with it. he can probably do it in languages he never learnt before.
Comment about prince Charles: genetically speaking he is german :) He is a member of the german house Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha. When Queen Victoria (House Hannover) married Albert, her children automatically became members of the house of Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha
I grew up in Germany as a child (both parents are German and moved to America) and to me, Sandra B. might not be speaking German perfectly, but she seems very comfortable, minus a few stutters, when she talks so I wouldn't be surprised if she was "fluent" or spoke German as her first or second language. edit: 1:12 ah, so she grew up in Austria.
The German lady was very sweet and probably an amazing German professor, but I don't her scores gave us a very accurate representation of the speakers' levels for the most part.
You should find a clip of Henry Winkler speaking German, I know his parents were German and I saw him speaking in Germany for some TV show some time ago.
I think Charles is saying, "It is also really a special pleasure to be in Berlin again, especially as the grandfather of a newborn grandchild." Charles pronounced the _a_ in _als_ like the short English _a_ and the _v_ in " Vergnügen" like the English _v._ Apparently he was reading from a prepared speech.
Sandra Bullocks speaks fast and nails the correct melody of the language, yet has a slight accent and clearly is not a native speaker. Still very, very good though, but not a 10/10. But a 9.5! Prince Charles read the words from a paper, most likley written in some kind of phonetic way. He does not seem to really understand what he is saying at any given time, his accentuation is off. But his pronounciation ist still very good, he clearly put in some effort, which is nice. But he pretty obviously does not know how to speak german. Prince William didn't even put in the effort. He basicly said hello with an accent. Everyone can do this in every language after 5 Minutes of practice. Leo's part in the movie is pretty good, but it's just a couple of lines he rehearsed. I'm more impressed with his free speaking, which is not very good, but the first actual free speaking we'ver heard so far. Yes, he actually speaks some german! Paul on the other hand seems to remember one german sentence from school and used that for decades, as it seems. It has always a polite and nice touch to speak a foreign laguage, but that gets a little old... Depp: random german sentence, funny and well pronounced. Simmons again just remembered like one german sentence from his schooltime, and made a few mistakes. Sandra Bullock and Leo stand out. The rest was not worth mentioning.
Why should it be surprising that Prince Charles speaks German, his mother does too! Until 1917, the Windsor dynasty was called Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, so it should be clear where the family comes from.
I could hear Sandra Bullock is not native, not at the first moment, but when speaks more it´s hearable in some weird R pronunciation that noone with any german mothertongue would do. But her german is pretty good still. She should judge more harshly, not for the speakers who all have done a decent job, but for those who wanna learn german properly it does not help to hear allways you are doing well if it is not the case.
sandra bullock is a native speaker. She was raised in Nürnberg until she was twelve. I also detetcted a little weirdness in her german. I attribute that to: Bayerisch dialect that im not that familiar with; rustyness due to being abroad for decades (it happens to native speakers alot); nervousness of the moment; all of the above.
@@afonsomendes6907 Actually she has a very slight accent for being a Fränkin (Franconian). Usually the R is trilled in Franconian accent, which I could not really hear, when she was talking.
@@afonsomendes6907 I speak some kind of bavarian dialect. Thats not bavarian. Nürnberg isn´t a region were any kind of bavarian is spoken. Thereabout starts the Fanconian speaking area. Rustyness is a good explaination though.
"(Sandra) Bullock was born on July 26, 1964, in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Arlington, Virginia, the daughter of Helga Mathilde (née Meyer 1942-2000), an opera singer and voice teacher from Germany, and John Wilson Bullock (1925-2018), an Army employee and part-time voice coach from Birmingham, Alabama. Her father, who was in charge of the Army's Military Postal Service in Europe, was stationed in Nuremberg when he met her mother. Her parents married in Germany. For 12 years, Bullock was raised in Nuremberg, Germany, and Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, and grew up speaking German." (Source: Wikipedia)
Hmm… she was very generous in her scores. And their accents? I don’t speak German that well, but they all sound like they were speaking German with their native accent. Just because you can pronounce the words correctly doesn’t necessarily mean you have a perfect German accent. Bullock had the best German and less American accent obviously
10:11 she probably misunderstood completely what Johnny Depp was trying to do. yes, he used those words but was more likely talking about astrology signs _Taurus_ and _Acquarius_ . for the benefit of his audience he tried to translate it into German but got it wrong. the words he was looking for were _Stier_ (Taurus) and _Wassermann_ (Acquarius)
I used to be quite good at speaking German. It's been so long though, and now I am hard pressed to speak even basic sentences. I miss it, but have no German speakers in my life to practice with.
Sometimes immersing yourself online can do the trick. I got my English accent just by basically living in English whenever I am online and speaking to myself ^^ Not too sure how much the German internet has to offer, though.
Anja is such a sweetheart ❤ I have no desire to learn German, but I love these videos just for the general education and entertainment ❤ Learning little information about the German language and learning about celebrities lol 👌
well, given that King Charles is decendent of a German family, Haus Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha, his German left a bit to desire 😆 oops, should have waited for William to make that comment.
I'm a bit hasher than your critic although SB takes the cake. She's as close to native as it gets. But there's a 'trace', a 'hint' of English. Excellent German; she deserves the 10. Vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, even some Rheinisch. Wow! Charles is, at best, an 8, maybe a 7. And in my book that's very good. William not so much; a 6 would be generous. Leo does a fine job, quite impressive probably a 9 or a high 8. Sir Paul has a good memory and 'faking skills' (as you mention; from all the worldwide performances). One or two sentences are too small a sample. How about a 6. Mr. Depp obviously wanted to get away from the pesky reporter. It was still understandable; not too bad. Maybe a 5+. I'm not sure about Simmons. He has been around the globe and knows 'how to' deal with the press so, yes, he can feed them a few lines. They're 'pretty good'. At least a 6 and maybe a low 7.
Sandra Bullock sounded very "practised". I would have liked a conversation. The royals sounded rather English with their slow delivery. However, I am impressed with anyone who even tries to learn a language. I am old and my brain is extremely lazy.
Paul McCartney's intonations and rhythm were also way off, which made him difficult to understand. It's a common problem for English speakers. They use the German words but keep the English rhythms and so on.
I dont think Leo's German pronunciation was Perfect in the first clip you could definitely hear that he isn't a native speaker he pronounced the -ch in the word "Ich" a bit too harsh like most English speakers do and just the general rhythm wasn't perfect but it was definitely better than a lot of other people who had to speak German in a movie
Anja is well generous with here ratings imo ^^ But that's understandable bc when do we ever get to hear anyone properly learn or speak German? I would disagree on Sandra. You can tell she is not a native but it's very close. And nice thing is that she isn't speaking the Tagesschau Standard German that no one really speaks but that instead it sounds a bit more informal, like a real conversation. Charles has an interesting accent. Some of it sounds different than typical Anglophone accents I've heard. Leo is almost as good as Sandra but obviously, it's a line he learned. You can hear one tendency that few people talk about: the vowels are a bit long. German (on average) tends to have shorter vowels than English but few people realise that. An American friend of mine who speaks otherwise perfect German sometimes has her words a wee elongated. Leo also has some sounds slightly off but I couldn't tell you which from just one listen. The accent absolutely was not perfect though. Johnny had one grammatical error and obviously just learned the phrases but the accent was surprisingly spot on. That's a 10/10 for someone who clearly doesn't actually speak the language. Gene has an accent and uses some false friends and such but he seems very confident conversing in German. Getting a lot out of what he has, very commendable.
With all due respect, she is wrong about Sandra Bullock. While her German is pretty good, you can tell she is an Ami (American), especially when she pronounces u with Umlaut.
It might have been good to see the reaction to Spencer Davis of the Spencer Davis Group speaking in German on stage in 1966 just before the band started playing a number, there's video of that on UA-cam somewhere.
My vote goes for Macca - the tie & jacket combo is off the scale & for anyone that age to learn German at school in somewhere like Liverpool & even remember anything is really good ( his grammar school must have been enlightened). I'm saying nowt about the royal family speaking German..
Suggestion; I love to LISTEN to videos like this. But I can't finish these videos because I have to look at the screen to see who is speaking and it's not convenient. If you would say their names out loud before they speak, it would be very helpful . P..s listeners may watch more ads in general as we aren't glued to the screen. I believe it would be profitable. Please and thanks! Also may help those with visual impairment.
I know this is unrelated to the video, but I'm still curious. As we all know famous actor Christoph Waltz is half Austrian and half German. So can any Deutsch speakers tell me: does he sound Osterreich when he speaks Deutsch, Deutsch or even a mixture of both? In comments on other videos, I've seen some say that he has accent of a upper class German speaker (from Germany) and one in the theatre. Do you agree with such assertions? :) great video as always Olly.
He sounds a bit more German when he speaks. However, he has quite a harsh pronounciation of certain consonants which sounds more Austrian (I don't know a better way to describe it). Also, he is his "own voice actor". So, it's kind of important to not have a very strong accent when he dubs
He does have a Viennese accent in every role I've seen him in. Btw: you can't say someone sounds Austrian or German per se. To Northern German ears Austrians and Bavarians sounds very much alike.
My father spoke English and German. My mother spoke English and Spanish. And although my siblings and I never picked up German or Spanish, aside from pronouncing various food dishes properly, the mere exposure in childhood helped several of us learn them all the more readily later on. I remember we used to have fun trying to get our dad to pronounce Spanish R’s and our mom to pronounce German R’s, which neither of them could ever do very well, but which all of us (kids) had no trouble with. So for parents who wish to raise multilingual children but worry that it’s just too much work, I say, don’t worry about it! Exposure alone will give them an invaluable leg up if/when they decide to dive into a language course later on. And confusion works itself out. By the time I was a teenager, for example, I discovered on my own that hash browns and Kartoffelpuffer were basically the same thing, and that the other kids at school had no idea how delicious they are mit Apfelmuss. Cheers! -Phill, Las Vegas
I find german a very stricked and unforgiving language! And you see that in all the germanic folks. If not spoken perfekt you dont get 9 or even 10/10. At leased it is honest and direkt, not to be misinterpreted. Must say, I love it.
The "judgements" are rather mild if you ask me. Sandra Bullock's German is very good, of course. But it sounds odd a few times (e.g. the way she pronounces the last syllable in "aber" or the weird grammar right at the beginning).
Mein Kumpel, diese Denkweise ist Teil des Problems. Firstly, some words are just funny to begin with, and some become funny with the correct accent. It's true in English too [just try poppycock and try not to laugh], and as much as many of you German pride yourself on your English, your Vs and Ws are quite adorable. My Mexican friends and students love how I pronounce certain words in Spanish. Second, getting angry about things while doing so little to fix it just reinforces the problem. Try introducing perfectly workable phrases and expressions. This is precisely why most Spanish or English, even in foreign movies tend to generally be so good. They and we, we thank the attempt and try to improve it where needed.
ich habe deutsch in waldorf schule gelernt, und mein akzent(sp?) ist sehr gut deutstch. i have polish, french and german people thinking i'm native thus far. which is funny. hahaha when I need to stop speaking, or switch to english sandra bullocks german is really great. prince charles is ok, sounds like a brit speaking german. of COURSE he spoke it before. his german background. and being a diplomat. williams accent is better than his father's so i would think he has learnt and spoken it; just not for some time. leo's accent ist nicht zu gut. doesn't sound native, but he has good german of course. nice to hear his specific accent that sounds dutch! lol or yiddisch or pennsylvania dutsch - paul - in first and 2nd is really well said. his accent isn't awful. patchy. johnny depp's accent is excellent. very witty. i wonder if he thought that up. which would mean perhaps his german is excellent orrrr his german is awful. gene's accent is ok, and you can tell he could carry himself a lil. he knows jewish immigrant/traveller languages! ability to switch is key! means one is highly intelligent, in my book.
In Tennessee (oder die meisten von der Sued USA eigentlich.), man sagt "Englisch" fast wie die Deutschen es sagen wuerden. Englisch hat Dialekten auch...naja eigentlich...mehr Diakleten als Deustch. Gruess aus den USA :)
Oh and how she overrates Leo … Wow. He's clearly not a native speaker - how could he be? Why can't we just say precisely point out what's not perfect (yet) instead of praising people to the skies?
So Olly, du hast kein deutsch gesprochen, und ich glaube, dass du nichts verstanden hast. So how come in your resumes, you are quoted as fluent in German. It's really annoying for those of us that actually speak multiple languages to be confronted with so called polyglots who clearly aren't. Really, really irritating. Une vidéo très cool Olly ! J'ai hâte de voir la deuxième partie.
I think Charles is saying, "It is also really a special pleasure to be in Berlin again, especially as the grandfather of a newborn grandchild." Charles pronounced the _a_ in _als_ like the short English _a_ and the _v_ in " Vergnügen" like the English _v._
Apparently he was reading from a prepared speech.
I'm fluent in German until I order a beer.
For the "ch" in "ich" I used to tell my students to say the English word "huge," and you hear that sound at the end of the word.
Prince Charles is from a German family. There are videos on you Tube of his father speaking very good German.
Small correction: Nürnberg is not in Austria but in Germany...
Nah, exept fot the "aber" at the end bullock geniunly sounded german
That prince Charles speaks german isn't that surprising. His father Prince Philip also spoke german.
His father was half German by his father. The mother from Philipp ( Alice von Battenberg (Mountbatten)) married a Prince from Greek.
Nürnberg is in germany NOT Austria 👀
I used to be quite good at speaking German. It's been so long though, and now I am hard pressed to speak even basic sentences. I miss it, but have no German speakers in my life to practice with.
Sometimes immersing yourself online can do the trick. I got my English accent just by basically living in English whenever I am online and speaking to myself ^^
Not too sure how much the German internet has to offer, though.
Anja is such a sweetheart ❤ I have no desire to learn German, but I love these videos just for the general education and entertainment ❤ Learning little information about the German language and learning about celebrities lol 👌
John le Carré spoke perfect German
well, given that King Charles is decendent of a German family, Haus Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha, his German left a bit to desire 😆
oops, should have waited for William to make that comment.
Macca even lived in Hamburg back in the day...
Although remember The Beatles got their start in Hamburg!
as a fluent German speaker who went to German high school, Sandra's is perfect. Sounds native.
Danke, sehr unterhaltsam 👍
I’d love to see a video with clips from movies of actors speaking really bad Chinese
First, Chris Tucker in Rush Hour 2. I don't speak Chinese but I knew he was doing crap.
Sandra Bullock IS a native speaker. She has two mother tongues
Sandra's mother's tongue is German.
Oh and I thought her mother tongue was german, good to hear it‘s only her mother‘s tongue;) Just joking
@@niconicht4982 well both are true. She was born in Germany to a German mother
Don't forget Matt Damon from the Bourne Identity and Bourne Supremacy movies.
King Charles father spoke native German.
Anja is well generous with here ratings imo ^^
But that's understandable bc when do we ever get to hear anyone properly learn or speak German?
The Beatles did record some of their early songs in German. Lennon could speak a little too.
I missed Prince Phillip. Prince Phillip was actually very good in german. Almost fluent
I am a native German speaker, so this is really funny for me to watch XD
Nobody asked
@@StarstreakHVM Du musst wohl auch überall deinen Senf dazugeben, oder?
Ist doch 'ne nette Info!
With all due respect, she is wrong about Sandra Bullock. While her German is pretty good, you can tell she is an Ami (American), especially when she pronounces u with Umlaut.
For part 2 can you include Liu Yangyang from WayV
It might have been good to see the reaction to Spencer Davis of the Spencer Davis Group speaking in German on stage in 1966 just before the band started playing a number, there's video of that on UA-cam somewhere.
hmmm..... maybe i never noticed much of a switch, because I had t switch alot..... vielen zeiten(?)
My vote goes for Macca - the tie & jacket combo is off the scale & for anyone that age to learn German at school in somewhere like Liverpool & even remember anything is really good ( his grammar school must have been enlightened).
I'm saying nowt about the royal family speaking German..
Sandra Bullock is a Native Speaker of German, it's like Anna Joy Taylor and Spanish 🤣
Christopher Lee`s German is pretty good, too.
King Charles father Prince Phillip spoke fluent German, his sisters married Germans.
Want Language UA-cam Channels Series, like the one's you made in Italian and Spanish languages!
Good ideas.
Deutsch ist meine zweite Sprache. Und auch meine Lieblings. Aber ich habe niemand mit wem zu üben.
The Beatles lived for many years in Hamburg/Germany before they became super famous. So I expected some German sentences from Paul.
Their appearance at the Starclub is legendary...
I find german a very stricked and unforgiving language!
And you see that in all the germanic folks.
If not spoken perfekt you dont get 9 or even 10/10.
At leased it is honest and direkt, not to be misinterpreted.
Must say, I love it.
German, Japanese, Hungarian... Throw in Italian and Gene Simmons would have himself an Axis Powers bingo
Donna Summer speaks fluent German also...
The "judgements" are rather mild if you ask me. Sandra Bullock's German is very good, of course. But it sounds odd a few times (e.g. the way she pronounces the last syllable in "aber" or the weird grammar right at the beginning).
That Gene Simmons clip was cringe af. Particularly the Japanese...
as a german, i hate to hear actors attempt german in movies. it paints the wrong picture to the viewers, bc its never good, and often nonsense.
@David Furor Curser: What wrong picture? Are you talking about WWII movies?
You think the German is bad. You want to see what they do to Irish.
ich habe deutsch in waldorf schule gelernt, und mein akzent(sp?) ist sehr gut deutstch. i have polish, french and german people thinking i'm native thus far. which is funny. hahaha when I need to stop speaking, or switch to english
sandra bullocks german is really great.
prince charles is ok, sounds like a brit speaking german. of COURSE he spoke it before. his german background. and being a diplomat.
williams accent is better than his father's so i would think he has learnt and spoken it; just not for some time.
leo's accent ist nicht zu gut. doesn't sound native, but he has good german of course. nice to hear his specific accent
that sounds dutch! lol or yiddisch or pennsylvania dutsch - paul - in first
and 2nd is really well said. his accent isn't awful. patchy.
johnny depp's accent is excellent. very witty. i wonder if he thought that up. which would mean perhaps his german is excellent orrrr his german is awful.
gene's accent is ok, and you can tell he could carry himself a lil. he knows jewish immigrant/traveller languages!
ability to
switch is key! means one is highly intelligent, in my book.
schon!!! the accent sounded a bit off. ok, maybe it was just me. but i understood it
Now react to celebs speaking Japanese
The Beatles used to sing in German.😉
Qué buen efecto inicial jaja
LOVE this video idea 😃 is there anything Sandra Bullock is not perfect at? Is she human? 🙈❤
Definitely from Mars!
@@storylearning 🤣🤗
The Jojo reference at the end 👏🏾👌🏾美しい🤣
Nürnberg is in Germany not in Austria
You should've done Donna Summer! She's fluent
Sandra Bullock did a solid job but it doesn't sound native.
for me its most importand to be understandable, mistakes included
Wow...Paul McCartney's German is quite good.

Deutsch ist die leichteste Sprache der Welt 😁👍🏻
In what Universe? Lmao
You speak German too alors
There is no such thing as 100% fluency.
Shouldn't it be *polyglots react 😏
Oh and how she overrates Leo … Wow. He's clearly not a native speaker - how could he be? Why can't we just say precisely point out what's not perfect (yet) instead of praising people to the skies?
Leos German is good, but the melody was not good.
If I go to your Spanish and Italian and Japanese videos, is it going to be the same thing?
Imagine selling courses to get fluent in german while not being fluent in german 😅
He doesn't even sell a course he just gives tips
