Living in the midwest and often times being one of a handful of black kids in a class does that. I think Shane has become very privileged when it comes to his wealth. The average American would be set for generations with the amount of money he has accumulated. The only likely reason for him saying he can't retire is because his lifestyle has become expensive (just look at the house he lives in.) I think spending time with Jerry Stern might've warped his perception of money and how to spend it.
It seems like the way Shane describes his life, cancellation, & career is an intentional effort to manipulate the people he tells into feeling bad for him. Obviously not a super revolutionary take but it just feels more apparent in this interview. Almost every time Steve-O or his co-host try to test or counter a statement of Shane’s, he proceeds to diminish everything he discusses about doing himself while bringing up a sad impact it had on him even if it’s not entirely true. He tried to hold on to the cutting part as long as he could until he had to admit that it was a fabrication. The more the interview goes on the more it feels Shane ups the stakes by saying something even sadder and continuously bringing up “being cancelled” makes it seem as though he is really trying to make the viewer sad for him. Because outside of this video, there are current and former Shane fans who liked his ‘transparency & relatability’ and if he isn’t regularly reminding people of all his issues and traumas, people would be more inclined to look at the facts right in front of them (ie. the reasons he was ‘cancelled’ to start with). When Shane is constantly bringing up all the awful things he’s been thru in his life, especially to ppl who support him, it feels primarily used as a distraction and when his fans are children that’s very easy for him to do.

For self-harm to be valid it doesn't have to be just cutting. Picking is also a very real way people harm themselves and although it can't always be just as damaging I don't think it deserves any less help.

Thank you for commenting this, I just posted a very similar comment because I felt like the way he talked about that clip made me feel really uncomfortable, upset, and angr. As someone who struggles bipolar disorder, I had an unconventional methodof self harm, which I didn't even know was a problem until a therapist told me it was. So many people struggle with self-harm, and they may use different methods than the ones that most people know about. People tend to ignore it or even dismiss it themselves. It's invalidating to a person's experience, and quite frankly, it was a very ignorant think to say, I am just very happy that someone else spoke out about his comment because I saw a lot of people agreeing with his point.
I think 90% of what Shane says is insincere. The moments where he’s most himself are when he puts other people down (mostly Ryland). But of course that’s just a joke bc sister shnapped go off queen throw that shade or whatever 🙄 Thank you Jake for being one of the only influencers to remind people of Shane’s worst crimes

Also a lot of people DO deserve to get cancelled and end up growing as a person from facing the consequences of their actions. Shane clearly takes next to zero accountability for all the negative impacts he’s had.

This is the one jake video that I feel iffy about. As a perso who has gone through depression and self harm, I don’t think it’s good to belittle people talking about that. I know Shane is a horrible person, but this still isn’t okay.
The gut-wrenching end of the world feeling he gets is guilt. he is feeling guilty and refuses to attribute those physical effects to such a feeling bc that would admit that he is, and always has been, wrong. When you've perfectly catalogued every instance of bigotry you have ever committed on the internet, in circumstances where you're "just making a joke" under the guise of that humor being "acceptable," it's no wonder he has developed/worsened his mental illness and a severe victim complex as result of not being able to face the widespread backlash of said bigotry.
While I appreciate Steve-O's desire to be compassionate to those we may feel don't deserve it, he didn't even touch on some of the more heinous sh!t Shane did and has yet to take accountability for. It seems like the way Shane describes his life, cancellation, & career is an intentional effort to manipulate the people he tells into feeling bad for him. Obviously not a super revolutionary take but it just feels more apparent in this interview. Almost every time Steve-O or his co-host try to test or counter a statement of Shane’s, he proceeds to diminish everything he discusses about doing himself while bringing up a sad impact it had on him even if it’s not entirely true. He tried to hold on to the cutting part as long as he could until he had to admit that it was a fabrication. The more the interview goes on the more it feels Shane ups the stakes by saying something even sadder and continuously bringing up “being cancelled” makes it seem as though he is really trying to make the viewer sad for him. Because outside of this video, there are current and former Shane fans who liked his ‘transparency & relatability’ and if he isn’t regularly reminding people of all his issues and traumas, people would be more inclined to look at the facts right in front of them (ie. the reasons he was ‘cancelled’ to start with). When Shane is constantly bringing up all the awful things he’s been thru in his life, especially to ppl who support him, it feels primarily used as a distraction and when his fans are children that’s very easy for him to do.

Thank you for commenting this, I just posted a very similar comment because I felt like the way he talked about that clip made me feel really uncomfortable, upset, and angr. As someone who struggles bipolar disorder, I had an unconventional methodof self harm, which I didn't even know was a problem until a therapist told me it was. So many people struggle with self-harm, and they may use different methods than the ones that most people know about. People tend to ignore it or even dismiss it themselves. It's invalidating to a person's experience, and quite frankly, it was a very ignorant think to say, I am just very happy that someone else spoke out about his comment because I saw a lot of people agreeing with his point.

This is the one jake video that I feel iffy about. As a perso who has gone through depression and self harm, I don’t think it’s good to belittle people talking about that. I know Shane is a horrible person, but this still isn’t okay.
The gut-wrenching end of the world feeling he gets is guilt. he is feeling guilty and refuses to attribute those physical effects to such a feeling bc that would admit that he is, and always has been, wrong. When you've perfectly catalogued every instance of bigotry you have ever committed on the internet, in circumstances where you're "just making a joke" under the guise of that humor being "acceptable," it's no wonder he has developed/worsened his mental illness and a severe victim complex as result of not being able to face the widespread backlash of said bigotry.

As someone who used to 'cut' (only actually did it with a razor ONCE, other times was just dull keys, not really breaking the skin, but would sometimes leave red dots along the lines) and is a chronic skin picker, those too are not the same. Like! Idk how to explain why I pick, but it's not the same as when I would purposefully hurt myself. The fact he even thought the two were remotely similar is insane
As someone who was groomed, abused and neglected as a child them speaking about how getting canceled was “traumatic” and how “no one should go through that stuff” made me want to punch a wall, by no means should I be comparing like this but he was a horrible person who got deserved consequences, not an innocent 6 year old
Here’s the thing for me, I feel like as middle schoolers, you’re in this weird in between stage of adolescence where you’re slowly getting introduced to adult subjects but at the same time still treated like a kid. I know for me, it felt like I wanted to prove a point that I was “mature” by watching edgy content like Shane’s because it exposed me to the adult themes and made me feel more “grown up” in a sense. Looking back now as an adult, what Shane was promoting on his channel as an ADULT was completely fucked up (some stuff really seemed like alleged grooming). The fact that he wants to blame his CHILD fans like myself who were still growing and figuring themselves out is beyond ignorant and stupid when he was the adult. Can someone please just hold him completely accountable for once in an interview? His child fans are not to blame for his creepy antics.
okay NOT defending shane but your take on kind of minimizing the anxiety around mass criticism didn’t sit right with me. i have been there where hundreds of people were harassing me on twitter and it absolutely feels the way he described. again in NO WAY defending him because he’s incredibly privileged, but it kinda felt like a minimization of anxiety. no hate at all, love the videos 💗
I agree. I have severe panic attacks, and it’s an AWFUL feeling. Definitely not defending Shane either but mental health matters just as much as physical.
