I for one love that the Star ship market is basically the same as the car market in real life. Instead of ships costing trillions of dollars like they would in real life, they actually just cost what everyday over priced new cars cost, and the used prices are around there too. However used prices in the Star Wars galaxy seem to be lower.
I'm a long time Star Wars RPG game master, and in my universe the explanation for used starships having such low prices is that if you buy a used ship you are typically buying a number of serious problems: a) The ship has an empty fuel tank and almost no life support consumables, and the price of fueling a ship fully is a large fraction of the cost of the ship (as many can fly for months back and forth across the whole galaxy on a single tank). b) The ship is probably overdue for an overhaul and has developed a number of quirks in its performance that will cause it to perform badly if you push it beyond the routine. c) The ship is likely over 30 years old and while it can keep flying it is a maintenance nightmare. In short, most used star ships are lemons.
you have to remember the old republic itself was 25k years old. that's a lot of old hulls banging around the universe and clogging up used car dealerships.
@@celebrim1 I imagine the regions of the galaxy are much like first-second-and third world countries in the real world in regards to cars. Y places like Naboo have local manufacturers and most other places rely on distant manufacturers and common parts between ships.
I would love it too if the cars/speeders cost were significantly lower than ship prices. But they are really similar, as if space travel added no technical constraint and the second engine for FTL was free.
Considering the galactic economy is literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of planets big it makes sense. Remember economies of scale make things cheaper as each part get's a specialized maker who's entire reason for existence is to make part A as cheaply as possible. Considering that literally every backwater world depends on trade for something and is at risk of being raided by hyper militarized space pirates the demand for spacecraft of both civilian and military grade is incomprehensible and the potential suppliers are literally any developed system that can support some kind of domestic craft.

So, let's think about this the Venator cost 49 million, plus an extra 60 million for full complement of aircraft of 400. For a total of 109 million Credits. Or Dollars sense you say it's a 1/1 ratio. For comparison the Gerald R. Ford Class Aircraft Carrier cost about 13 billion Dolars. Plus, an extra 3 billion a full complement of aircraft of 90. For a total of 16 billion Dollars. So, what I am hearing is the U.S. could build 130 Venator ships with full compliments for the cost of what we are paying for 1 Aircraft Carrier.
It is made more ridiculous when the, estimated, value is 1:1.44 (per travelmoneyoz, 2019) So a Venator would only cost the U.S., in an at cost purchase, $18,720,000, each, not adjusting for inflation. Even then, that's pennies on the dollar. The Republic and Empire kept a pretty tidy economy, all things considered.

1:00 You left out crime syndicates. Criminals across the galaxy were more than happy to throw *lots* of credits at anyone willing to fight the Empire for them.
Can u do videos about how the Rebellion created their own economy (20 Alliance Credits 🟰 1 Imp Credit), the value of commodities like spice, aurodium, gemstones, bacta and tibanna?
Or the tenders and salvagers that repair the big imperial ships after a battle. You never hear about the floating factories that get big capital ships moving again after being crippled.
About twenty years ago, credits were said to be slightly less powerful than a US Dollar. Inflation out here affecting my relationship to fictional currencies.
i'm at work now and just found this vid so can't watch, but i just finished the rogue squadron series for the umpteenth time and there is one particular quote that mentioned 400k NR credits could purchase 2 xwings with spare parts. I feel like with thousands of years of parts and hulls flooding the market, ships are so common and cheap that people just choose not to go to space. the price isn't the limiting factor there like it seems to be in other scifi IPs. which is understandable, today you can find cheap Live on Board boats for as low as $15k, and yet not everyone is out there buying them and living on them because they just prefer solid ground.
Oh, I just realized that with all this ship lore, you could make a game about a broke pilot managing to buy a headhunter to start doing freelance work and gradually earn enough to buy bigger and better ships. That's.. kind of an obvious game idea for SW, where's that game?
Another thing you have to remember about the speed of these ships is that they are doing it all with ion engines rather than ignition engines, which means much less carbon emission which is probably why even coroscaunt didnt suffer from global warming. Even the empire cares more about their planets than we do
Oooh i haven't seen you do things like this before in two years that i've followed. Maybe i missed some, could be for sure. I'll watch this in two parts. Now at evening when chill with Herbal Tea & tomorrow while munch breakfast Porridge that has berries & Naturli V Spread 🙂
This seems to me like a direct reaction to all the frustration among STAR WARS-fans today, who are disappointed by the general course this franchise is taking, while there still is no clear vision of the stories that should be told or said stories' core values. One thing that STAR WARS has always been good at is exactly this, starship design with a distinct look and feel to it, the exact minutiae of these fictional technologies, right down to the imagined cost of them
Having repulsolifts beijng such a universal technology means that aerofoils are no longer needed to provide lift. Therefore aerodynamics becomes less important. Especially if shields reduced the worst effects of drag by smoothing out the hull shapes of atmospheric flight. Every aircraft we build has every other function fitted in around aerodynamic considerations. The Star Wars universe no longer has that limitation.
I just want the Ebon Hawk. Though, I will say I do really like the affordable Y-Wing bombers. The darn things were almost indestructible in Battlefield 2 (PS2) and dominated space battles, able to engage everything from interceptors to capital ships. It's just a shame it couldn't double as a mobile home. The YT-1300 really is the best all-rounder at an affordable price, plus you can live in it.
Some people are drawn to Star Wars because of the rich, emotional stories and deep web of inter-connection between all living things. But I'm autistic, so I'm here for the bureaucratic and economic breakdowns of manufacturing in the Star Wars universe. Different strokes.
I'm curious but was it ever discussed in this channel how the Empire treated Incom Corp? Considering they manufactured most of the Rebel Alliance's Fleet, did they stow away their production facilities elsewhere? Did the Empire ruined the reputation of Incom's board of directors and shareholders?
Did Incom just decide to hand off all their blueprints to the Alliance, I mean I find it funny that the star fighter the Empire rejected ended up being their biggest pain in the ass.

America could conquer a galaxy far, far away lol.
Within the first minute, you had me.
Great intro. Great topics. Great choice in "background window overlays".
👍
I’m already hooked by the first 10 seconds!
LETS GOO hour and a half of star wars lore. Just what i needed.
Generation tech will always be one of my favorite channels if not my favorite 😊
Great video, I do with you compared the ships to cars and motorcycles like you did later in the video throughout the whole thing, it really helped put things into perspective
Luthen Rael’s ship is underrated.
Nuxanor has been doing a starwars deep dive and this is perfect for that. If anyone watches him try to send it to him I think this will be right up his alley after he watched the death of democracy video
Thanks for making this video! I've been trying to look up prices of ships because I've talked about the stat wars table top game, which got me thinking about the cost of the ships, weapons and armor of the star wars universe. I really like knowing the nitty gritty details.
I love this channel so much. Alan is so much fun to watch
This is the gentech content I love and miss❤
I've always said if I was in SW a Gazanti with an LAAT/C and AT/TE with a speeder bike would be a great setup.
Recently had a small bump with a fellow leaving a planet. This is going to be very helpful in my buying decision. Hoping to track down this one journalist who keeps hopping from planet to planet with each video. I will find him.
great video! love this - no one else has even come close to attempting this.
edit - can you do droid one next?
I have learned economics during my study at the logistics, 12 years ago. I really like to learn the economics of the Star Wars universe. Thanks for this video. 🙌
An hour and a half?? Damn. You're a beast at making quality videos.
I'd love a video about all of the junkyards, scrapyards, and boneyards in the Star Wars universe :)
Or the tenders and salvagers that repair the big imperial ships after a battle. You never hear about the floating factories that get big capital ships moving again after being crippled.
We need a Star Wars top gear style episode. Imagine Jeremy Clarkson ripping into CIS star fighters for being mindless droids.
i want an episode of him crashing cloud car constantly
@ oh yeah he would hate the Cloud Car. Tie Fighters too.
1:19:18 Thank you for this advice, i'll remember it when make the purchase from merchant in Galaxy Far, Far Away 🙇♂
20:26 Breaking news: Gigachad Grand Admiral Thrawn intimidates Rebel scum into landing stolen vessel using only a blaster pistol.
The VCX-100 is actually bigger than the YT-1300.
They are similar in length and width, but the VCX is twice as tall. It has much more internal volume.
I love these kinds of videos. Thank you SO much!
This video is the answer to every one of my prayers
Oh, I just realized that with all this ship lore, you could make a game about a broke pilot managing to buy a headhunter to start doing freelance work and gradually earn enough to buy bigger and better ships. That's.. kind of an obvious game idea for SW, where's that game?
starsector
Another thing you have to remember about the speed of these ships is that they are doing it all with ion engines rather than ignition engines, which means much less carbon emission which is probably why even coroscaunt didnt suffer from global warming. Even the empire cares more about their planets than we do
How did you come up with such an interesting title and topic?!?! I just started the video, i am excited for an hour of spaceships and spacemoney.
great video mate but nothing is better than a space subaru reliable and easy to work on might be corellian
Subawoo
Finally some good Star Wars content
I've always loved the gozanti, it looks cool and is very useful
Oooh i haven't seen you do things like this before in two years that i've followed. Maybe i missed some, could be for sure. I'll watch this in two parts. Now at evening when chill with Herbal Tea & tomorrow while munch breakfast Porridge that has berries & Naturli V Spread 🙂
The TIE-Defender is my absolute favorite…
I love the Z95 headhunter and if I had to go with any star wars star fighters it would be the Z95
Idk why i really like when you talk about ships.
This seems to me like a direct reaction to all the frustration among STAR WARS-fans today, who are disappointed by the general course this franchise is taking, while there still is no clear vision of the stories that should be told or said stories' core values. One thing that STAR WARS has always been good at is exactly this, starship design with a distinct look and feel to it, the exact minutiae of these fictional technologies, right down to the imagined cost of them
Always love these kinds of fiction logistics series. great for helping my own sci-fi research.
always enjoyered your vids my man, but i do think this one has been my favourite
20:58 Allen, that looks more like 4 laser cannons, 2 ion cannons, and 2 missile launchers
*agrees in Tie Fighter by LucasArts*
Having repulsolifts beijng such a universal technology means that aerofoils are no longer needed to provide lift. Therefore aerodynamics becomes less important. Especially if shields reduced the worst effects of drag by smoothing out the hull shapes of atmospheric flight. Every aircraft we build has every other function fitted in around aerodynamic considerations. The Star Wars universe no longer has that limitation.
Where was the clip of suddenly stopping from at 17:04 ?
The expanse pretty great show first few seasons
"Why didn't they do a bunch of Holdo maneuvers?"
*points to 90 minute video on starship economics*
This rules i want more videos like this
I just want the Ebon Hawk.
An hour and a half of Alan talking Ships, don't mind if I yes.
watching this while playing stardew valley is probably the most relaxing time ive ever had in my life
Some people are drawn to Star Wars because of the rich, emotional stories and deep web of inter-connection between all living things. But I'm autistic, so I'm here for the bureaucratic and economic breakdowns of manufacturing in the Star Wars universe. Different strokes.
We need more of these long videos!
How much did we pay for those A-Wings? We found them in a used Starship depot, they were donated to us - Rebel Alliance spokesman
It looks like the cost of basically everything in the StarWars universe seems to be linear with the surface area of the box which would contain it.

Dynamic class freighter my beloved
love your stuff man
1:12:54 --> Excellent 🥳
Could you creat an index so we can return when necessary to find specific ships for background info?
So what you’re telling me is an F22 would fuck up a tie fighter any day of the week. Neat.
This is why I use the internet, this makes that monthly bill worth it
This is a fun idea. I'm looking forward to watching it.
Did Incom just decide to hand off all their blueprints to the Alliance, I mean I find it funny that the star fighter the Empire rejected ended up being their biggest pain in the ass.
Hi, Is there any lore about the day to day cost of operating the various vehicles.. How about range vs load.. Thank you..
You talked Lamba shuttle but didn't mention the Sentinel class shuttle, but showed footage of the Sentinel while talking about the Lamba!
Yesss hours of economics.
46:18 Just a Flesh Wound that Bacta heals to El Bueno Condition 😋 Gonna take a look at that sparring Lightsaber's price & how much shipping costs are to Land Of Thousand Lakes ✅
Would love to see about the Seperatist and Trade Orginization fleets of lucrehulk and Droid fighters
You forgot about Old Republic era starships like the Fury-class Imperial Interceptor, the Harrower class Dreadnoughts, the Thremton class Destroyers, and the other ships from the Sith Empire and Old Republic.
That is a good question. These loans taken by: the Empire, Republic, CIS, and NR must have been massive.
I would love a open world star wars game with all these details worked in
Finding a Z-95 for anywhere near MSRP would probably be like finding a 240Z for MSRP.
1:11:40 It's that Desmo valve system. There's no free lunch.
Please do a series about creating your own starwars ships
Lmao cup of coffee song had me laughing.
This is such a dull topic, I doubt I'll last 15 minutes. But as I dream, you can have all my sweet sweet watch time 😴❤💗
The Honda call-out was perfect 😂
