  • A review of the QRP 5-watt step attenuator and dummy load kit produced by the Xtal Set Society Inc. Attenuation steps were 6dB, 6dB, 3dB and 3dB.
Video describes construction of the kit and gives some hints and tips.
UPDATE OCTOBER 11 2011: The commentary refers to some minor errors in the manual's text and decibel attenuation calculations. Revised instructions and kits are now being supplied. Attenuation steps are now 12dB, 12dB, 6dB and 3dB. This allows a cut of up to 33dB in 3dB steps. Which means it can drop 5 watts down to 2.5 milliwatts - a large improvement over the previous 40 milliwatts. Users with FT-817s can use the 500mW setting to this attenuator to drop down to 0.25 milliwatts. The latter is close to the original specified range and sufficient for any serious milliwatting work.
The revised kit is highly recommended and represents better value than sourcing the parts seperately. For further information and to order visit www.midnightscience.com
